Noctaman, this may just be the best topic ever.

As for me, I'll go with the old Roman solution of chopping things' heads off with a gladius.

Since when is a gun a melee weapon? If it's unloaded and you bludgeon people with it, ok, but it won't do you much good against the other choices sofar.

A swordbow. It's a bow that fires swords and it can also be used a swordflail.
I just laughed so hard at the thought of that. I'd go with some sort of polearm, I don't see why everyone thinks they can doge sword swings so easily.

Beam Katana (Specifically the Tsubaki Mk.III)

Since the post states that the weapon can be a "melee arm" and it is technically a "blade," I think this can be allowed as the weapon of my choice. As for the why, this weapon choice allows for greater combat superiority. Conventional weapon types will disintigrate against the beam blade, leaving only other beam katanas to pose any actual challenge. Even guns would prove useless since their shots would be blocked.

This also brings a psychological advantage to the fray. If I run out of Juice for it, I'd simply jerk that thing around in a way that would cause my opponent to either stare, look away, or just kill their concentration.

This only leaves the best opponents. Beam Katana wielding, Nerves of Titanium killers who would slit my throat before I even blink. If I can't look forward to that, then why fight?

A small knife; no longer than a foot in length. I trust myself enough to dodge any swing from a large weapon and score a strike to the neck or chest.
Yep, Large melee weapons tend to be larger, heavier, and much harder to regain stance. A nice would be ideal for such a situation.

A Lochaber Axe [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lochaber_axe].

Pros: Good reach, meaning I can stay away from them, which is always good
Like all Halberds of the time, it has a spike on the other end which can be used for thrusts
It honours my Scottish heritage
It's an AXE-SPEAR!
Hook for climbing up things
Can sweep people from underneath, sending them falling to the floor

Cons: Pretty useless in close combat
Can be dodged easily
Slow

You are challenged to a one-on-one, freeform duel! Weapon choice has been limited to melee arms, but you can pick any type:blade, blunt, polearm or flailing; what would be the weapon of your choice and why?

For those that wish to look into them a bit more, here are lists of types of swords, daggers, polearms and staves, axes, clubs and flailing weapons.

My choice would go to the old European arming sword.
It's double straight edge, crossguard and manageable size make it a versatile weapon.
It may not be as light or sharp as a katana, but the cutting edge won't chip as easily under improper use and maintaining and repairing the sword is a lot easier.
Also, it's designed as a one-handed sword.
Pro: I'll have a hand free to grapple/hinder my opponent or carry a buckler/parrying dagger.
Con: making a two-handed swing or parry will be incredibly awkward.

EDIT corrected terminology.
This is just a little detail but katanas aren't actually that sharp they are more for glancing blows and durability than being ubder sharp.

You don't bludgeon people with a gun, it mars the finish.

Ye I thought I'd have my bases covered but it doesn't have a hidden gun.

I think a spear would be easiest to use, its hard for the enemy to block against and you just need one hit to bring someone down
