Wow
That is so fucked up
Holy shit
We've actually had a home like that close to where my dad lives
Eventually the smell alerted the neighbors and they called the cops.
Don't know what happened after that though

That was actually a very inspiring story, about two people who took a child who everyone, including her own mother, said would never rise from a near comatose state. Compared to other severe deprivation cases, Dani's story is a legitimate miracle. Those first 5 years are impossibly and astoundingly crucial for development, physically, morally, and intelligence-wise. Having a child come far enough to understand right and wrong and begin to take care of themselves is amazing. I think Bernie and Diane are two of the most caring and blessed individuals I've ever heard of.

Also, I'm gonna refrain from passing judgment on the original mother because I think she's one of the few people who are simply too stupid to be hated. Like the author of the article stated, she seems like a person who can't or won't take any kind of responsibility for her actions nor for her own well-being, instead relying on outside events to intervene and force her to act. Just seeing the state of her house, she doesn't even care enough to try to improve her own situation by killing the pests or fixing the damages. Ironically, I think she may have also been neglected as a child, though not nearly as severely as Dani, because most moral and ethical development comes from the parents, and the mother's pattern of latching onto new boyfriends confirms that she has a fear of being alone.

That's so sad... Well that's just the icing on the cake of a shitty day. But thank you. It helps put my life's problems into perspective.

This is beginning to lead me to believe we need a purge. This is the second worst thing I've ever read.

Because this is the worst humanity has to offer. Not genocide, serial killers, and all that, but horrible living conditions for one kid.

But, then again, wasn't it Stalin who had said "One death is a tragedy, a million deaths, a statistic"?

This is the most heartbreaking thing I've ever read.

And I've read the plot summary for The Day The Clown Cried.

Am I a terrible person for feeling no real emotion after reading this?
I mean, don't get me wrong; it's an utterly deplorable situation, but... eh.

I dont get what all the suprise is about?

There is at least a few stories like this a month but not all of them reach this level of distribution among the populace.

This is what happens when you have just anyone popping out kids raised in a place where parents are lazy and expect the goverment to raise their children for them or when the goverment doesnt even let the good parents actually be parents and tie the parents hands with tons of regulations and fear mongering.

We have schools in the US banning recess for fear of kids getting hurt. When I was a kid it wasnt a fun recess if I didnt come home with a skinned knee or a bruise.

This, should not be suprising at all.

as Internet Kraken said,

life goes on,

Im sure next week there will be another terrible story of the month for everyone to gasp and recoil in shock over.

Well that's depressing. Yeah, the mother's pretty stupid (the article thing said her IQ is 77, borderline intellectual capacity), but the most mentally challenged parent should know to take care of her own goddamn daughter. I think the worst part is her self justification of all the shit that happened to her.

I do believe he did, but I don't totally agree with it, though.
I see it all as tragedy, though. One or one million.

Poor girl. It's really tragic, it makes me sick that people like that are allowed to have kids, how could they have possibly not known anything was wrong after the two child abuse complaints. Really I don't even know what to say, how could a mother do that....

Wow, now I don't think I'll click on the link.. If it can depress The Escapist community then it's too much for me.

Damn my curiosity! I wanna read it, but I'm afraid it will lower my opinion of the human race..
