Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

He probably suffered through the most as president, and still did a damn good job.

Martin Van Buren! IDK why.
Because Van Buren presided over the worst economic disaster in American History, the Panic of 1837, then fiddled while the economy burned? I think he was reincarnated as Herbert Hoover.

POLK! It was POLK I say!
Mexico would like a word with you...
I live in Texas, I'M SURE THEY WOULD! Luckily my Texan training has prepared me in the case of such an event.
im pretty sure some of texas actually rightfully belonged to mexico until the US decieded that they wanted it and ignored borders set by mexico
...You do know there was a war right? Based mostly on the Mexican government oppressing Texan settlers? The US didn't "decide it wanted Texas," in fact after the war with Mexico, Texas was it's own country for several years, until the US finally agreed too annex it for political reasons.

Little history lesson for you.
Basically, Mexico needed American settlers to help it colonize Mexico, to help stabilize their colonies, and help fend off attacks from native americans (whom the mexican's stole Texas from btw). So, mostly in hope of looking for a new life or in hope to escape large debts, American settlers began to settle in Texas. In many cases, only the man of the house came to the colonies initially due to it being dangerous from indian raids. Once the colonies were settled and safe from indian raids, their families would join them.

Well the colonization in Texas was going well, in fact much better than Mexico had assumed it would. American colonists were starting to outnumber Mexican colonists by a good margin. At this point, President Santa Anna came in to power, (he was like a Mexican Hitler) and started oppressing the American Colonists. Requiring them to convert to Roman Catholocism, pay unfair taxes, and then the final straw closing off American colonization completely, separating many colonists from their families who had planned on moving in to Texas once the colonies were safe. As you can Imagine, this didn't sit right with the colonists so they started to revolt. The war officially started when the Mexican Government, realizing the Texans were beginning to revolt, attempted to retrieve a cannon it had given to one of the colonies to help fend off indian raids. The colonists basically said, if you want it come and take it. And thus the war began.[/history]

I know everyone puts Kennedy up in there top 5 presidents ever, but personally, I feel while he was a great man, and good leader he was never faced with any adversity. FDR, Lincoln, and Washington are often ranked in the top 3 for their leadership during trying times. For example, FDR handled the Great Depression and WWII with skill and determination and due to his presidency, America became a superpower. Lincoln did what no president ever did, by rebuilding a separated nation. Washington handled starting the nation with grace and set precedents for future presidents.

Anyways, my list would probably be:
1. Abe Lincoln
2. FDR
3. George Washington
4. Thomas Jefferson
5. James K. Polk

By the way, if you don't know who Polk is, look him up. Everything he said he was going to do during his campaign, he actually did during his presidency. And the only reason he wasn't elected to office a second time was he hated the job and didn't run.

Also, for the record, I'd put Kennedy somewhere in the top 10.
didnt polk start an unjust war with mexico?

didnt jfk have to deal with the bay of pigs? the cuban missile crisis? Vietnam? and didnt he put a ban on nuclear missle testing?
Didn't Jefferson have slaves? How about Washington? Some could argue that FDR didn't cure the Great Depression, that was WWII. Apparently some people on this forum think you can compare Lincoln's handling of the Civil War similar to that of Bush's handling of Iraq (although I'd disagree). Each president did something bad, or you can argue that they did something bad.

Arguably, the bad blood between Mexico and the United States started much earlier than Polk's presidency. Technically, Texas had been a free republic prior to the U.S. annexing them. Mexico initiated that war, the U.S. just might have taken it too far, like usual.

All of that is true about Kennedy, but I could put other presidents before him, because they also dealt with some crazy stuff. I'd say he is about seven or eight on my list.

Here is a little history lesson on how diesel Theodore Roosevelt was. He was giving a speech for his campaign (I forget if it was for the first or second presidency or when he ran for a third time, but quite frankly that is irrelevant) and there was an assassination attempt. The hitman fired, and the bullet hit his chest. The hitman was dealt with by security and TR gave the rest of his speech. After someone told him he had been shot, he looked down at his chest and realized that there was blood everywhere. The bullet went through a 50 page manuscript, folded, in TR's overcoat, then it penetrated his chest. The manuscript prevented the bullet from killing him, however, TR lived the rest of his live with that bullet in his chest, like a real man's man.

What is it that makes Abe Lincoln so spectacular? I never really got the point of that.

Sure he freed some slaves and won the Civil war. But after that he basically said, hey, all you southern guys are welcome back into our country, especially since you hate us.

No one has done what FDR did...which was bringing our country straight out of the depression and turning it basically completely around!
You say he freed the slaves and won the Civil war like it was no big deal. I think the 30,000 or so blacks living in America would like a word with you.

Secondly, Lincoln was damn smart to be gentle on the South after the war. His plan would have made reconstruction a hell of a lot smoother for the south, but then he was assasinated, and his succesor Andrew Johnson punished the south harshly. The result? The birth of the KKK and a hatred of the North that would last over a century.
I'm saying that his accomplishments are pretty much insignificant compared to FDR's accomplishments as president. Besides, FDR exited the White House as the most popular president of all time; Lincoln was assassinated.
fdr died in office
Yeah, and when he died he was the most popular president of all time; lincoln was assassinated :]

Clinton, our first black president ever. Not just because everything got fixed while he was president, but he was always so much fun. There was always a stupid scandle or something. Certainly an interesting president.

Commie scum.
Well, he was still a president.

And if you where refering to me; No I am not.
But I see nothing wrong with communism. At least when its done rigth.
when has communism been done right?
Never. Thats the problem.
The IDEAS behind communism is actualy better then democracy. But the leaders always fucked up.
New consepts need some trial and error before it works. And compared to democracy communism is quite new.

Lincoln for the win. He had the courage to stand up to the South and force them to stay with the United States. He was also one of the most level-headed men in the office. George comes in at a close second for being a badass revolutionary.

And don't forget kids: Honest Abe's favorite sport was wrestling.
