You likely know about the movement of Puritan exiles to America to escape religious persecution in England. Well, along with them came adventurers and fortune-seekers who managed to turn a great profit, since the land was pretty much untouched and rich in natural resources. The British tried to capitalize on that, setting up plantations and stuff, but they didn't really respect any of the rights the colonists had. The American colonists were exploited for taxes and resources, but got no representation in Parliament, which is what sparked the American Revolutionary War.
