If it can't be proven (and it can't) then clinging to it as Truth is dishonest.
The absence of evidence is not the same as the evidence of absence. Sorry, had to be said.
True enough friend, but in the absense of sufficient evidence, the option that requires the least fantastic aspects to hold true is taken as, at the very least, a suitable placeholder for the Truth.

When/If sufficient evidence comes to light, that placeholder will be removed. My personal opinion remains that an entity capable of bending reality to their whim is at least slightly more fantastic than a series of (however improbable) events.

The biggest lie I was told as a child was that a giant man in a flowing robe with a long white beard lived in the sky and watched my every move keeping a running score of how good/bad I am so when I cash out in the end he can send me to the proper place for all eternity.

Heh, same. Well, sorta.

"Fig rolls are made from insects, you know."

But the number one lie I was told as a child? No, the number one lie I've been told at any point during my life, by the maximum number of people?

"Be yourself."

There's a widely used red coloring that is made from some type of beetle. I think it's used for food too. I'll see if I can dig up some evidence of this outrageous claim but It'll probably be hard, since I can't remember what it's called...

The food coloring is called "carmine" and yeah, it's made from a thing with six legs. This is why you shouldn't eat food.

I was told too many lies to list. The biggest one would be: "you can trust me" - anyone.

That they're proud of me no matter what I do (yeah, sure flipflopped on that one didnt you?) and that if I try hard, I can do anything! (....well?)

In a more appropriate tone, the obvious... if I sat too close to the tv, my eyes would go square.

I told my little sister that burdock seeds (which are covered in small spikes) were hedgehog eggs, and that if she kept them warm they'd eventually hatch.

'These are the best years of your life, son'- a bigger lie I have never heard.

Okay, work may suck but on the bright side, you get paid for it. I hated school and still dislike some parts of college (not as bad as school was though).

'Just be yourself'- The strangely vague and cryptic words of advice given in quite a few scenarios that does in fact provide little, if any, help or guidence.

"If you swallow chewing gum, it'll stay in your stomach for seven years."

I've had the pleasure of being able to tell some people that that's bull faeces.
I was given the more terrifying version of this. "If you swallow chewing gum, it'll wrap around your heart and stop it beating."
The fact that food dosen't usually go through the heart to get to the stomache didn't occur to me.

"If you eat watermelon seeds one will grow in your stomach."

That shit scared me. I remember crying and begging them to take me to the hospital because I'd already swallowed some. I was probably three or so.
I was told that too!
They once showed it actually happening in a cartoon once, if anyone can remember. It made me scared!
It was Rugrats (may have had z instead of s, I cannot recall)
I was told that people are good and care for each other, boy was I naive.

we had a drafty attic(loft) in our house so crap would often become dislodged and fall to the ground with a big CRASH on stormy nights. this used to scare the hell out of me so my parents said that it was just the bears in the attic doing ballerina!

also my grandparents had big orange pet Karp in there pond, they told me that they were swimming carrots. needless to say i refused to eat carrots until i was 6.

one of my friends was told that babies were made when a man kisses a woman on the belly button

I told my niece that if she didn't eat her vegetables, Mr. Broccoli and Mr. Cauliflower would be upset, whch would upset Mr. Plate, which would upset me :p XD
It worked though.

As for the birds and the bee's ... "I'll tell you when you're older."
Or
"You were found in a skip."

Charmed, I'm sure.
