i'd have to say grave of the fireflies, its a studio ghibli film and set during WWII. i first saw it when i was 7 and it still makes me cry to watch it... saying that though a there are a lot of animes that are sad, but in my opinion grave of the fireflies is the best...

By far the most depressing, yet funny cartoons I have ever watched was Monkey Dust on BBC 3.

The sketches in that show were as disturbing as they were hilarious.
One of the most hilarious show I've seen. Especialy that ikky chatroom-pedophile sketch. Disturding yet hilarious.

Watching re-runs of Futurama till the early hours of the morning, sobbing into wine and eating butter from the spoon.
That's a tragic, yet beautiful image. Thank you for sharing it with us <3

No wonder this was banned from tv..to creepy for kids.
Still a very good analogy on human society. Plus the coolest looking Satan I've ever seen.

That is far far sadder than the lead up was set it up to be. If onyl all Kiwi's were that smart maybe they wouldn't need to fly.

Futurama, more preciesly, Jurassic Bark episode.

I assume you watched it, if not, you probably regret it... Anyway, in that episode, Fry (protagonist) finds a fossile of his dog from the year 2000. He tries to bring him back to life, meanwhile, we get to see a lot of scenes from their life - where they met, how did they spend time and play.

Then, Fry realises that his dog was fossiled at the age of 15 - so basically, he died 12 years after Fry was frozen. He knows that this dog wouldn't be happy, that he had a new life, new owners and has learned a lot new trick already...

But the truth was a lot sadder, and that makes me cry - the dog waited for Fry to come back, every single day, rain or snow, not moving from the place Fry worked at. God, why did I remind myself of how sad that was...
This is the only cartoon to ever make me cry. It reminded me so much of Argus from The Odyssey. Loyalty always moves me.

Yes some of those epsiodes are fairly depressing, especially the ones that pick up the Fry and Leela plotline.

The Animals of Farthing Wood film was pretty sad. They had a whole five minute scene leading up to the two hedgehogs getting run over on a busy road. That's very sad and disturbing as a child.
Animals of Farthing Wood! *shudders*
Why the hell did I watch that depressing stuff as an impressionable youngster?
It fucked my shit up.

I think there was a joke in my anime club that if you watched Jin-Roh, Grave of the Fireflies, and Night on the Galactic Railroad one after the other, you will be so depressed you'll want to kill yourself.

That... Really ruined my evening... *cries*

That was probably the most depressing thing that I've ever watched.

--Xvito, keeping it... Sad.
Actually the kiwi didn't die. You could hear the sound of a parachute opening at the end.
I thought that sound was the Kiwi smashing against the ground.
Yeah, thats what it sounds like.

I actually cried when I saw this episode. It may be me being over emotional as usual but that is just heart wrenching.

UP.

The first 10 minutes of the new Pixar movie are the one of the saddest 10 minutes I've ever seen in a cartoon.
