Avoid ArmA II. Played it for a while, but the aiming is mushy. You move your mouse to the target, then it just drifts a bit further. So you have to aim short, and wait for it to drift onto the target. No good for an FPS. I'd blame consoles... but I doubt it's their fault in this case. Just seems like poor development.
That feature can be turned down or off in the options menu. It's called, "Aiming Deadzone," and it is meant to simulate weapon weight. The idea is that the weapon has weight to it and the inertia can be felt when swinging the weapon from one side to another; just like in real life.

The control slider for that is located in:

Options --> Game options --> Aiming Deadzone

it sounds good for a stealth game in my opinion with the blood trails and all that, on easy make it so you can get shot twice in the vitals and die and AI isnt as smart, normal is pretty much what you put, and hard means you have no hud, no crosshairs and the map only reveals locations youve been to, i reckon it could work.
The map properly would be a actually map on paper so you have to pull it out and look at it.

It's about 9 missions (two are cutscenes), and one is a bit of a secret as you have to fail an objective in a mission in order for it to show up. Most of them allow you to command a squad, and one of them is a 'high command' mission where you lead a LARGE assault on an enemy position.

It's actually not all that short if you play it correctly - on a higher difficulty. There are usually plenty of tasks to be performed on all of the missions, and they can be pretty complex depending on how you go about them (I don't want to spoil anything for you).

It's definately got some great weapons and gadgets (SCAR variants, backpacks, additional UAVs, etc.), and the editor is more robust than ever.

I'm also sensing a British campaign that may be released some time down the road. The official forums are buzzing about such a thing as either DLC or another add-on, and they kind of hint about it in the campaign.

Overall, it's a good addition. It's shorter than I had hoped, but it gave me a lot of neat new toys to play with improved graphics, performance, and it integrates well with ArmA 2 and adds some features there as well.
Sounds pretty short, but hey, there's the editor. So no big deal.

By the way, I'm so happy to see another person here, who likes ARMA. Thank you

I want a game where if you get shot in the leg and it shatters the bone, you have to have it in a cast for a while, and make visits to the doctor for physical therapy sessions and take pain medication, then when you're finally back to normal the army lets you get back in on the action except you still have a bit of a limp that will never go away.

Wait, no, I don't want that.

Now THAT would annoy me. Honestly, I find the degree of "realism" in shooters these days annoying.

I miss the days of emptying entire clips into opponents, and they were still only half dead...
Really? I hate games like that. It annoys me to no end and annoys the people I play with to no end when I empty a whole magazine into their chest and they kill me and I scream "FUCKER! DIE WHEN I KILL YOU!"

No problem.

I've been a fan of BIS milsims since the original Operation Flashpoint, and I probably will be until the day I die. Nothing else even comes close.

That's why I bought Serious Sam off Ebay. It's still not that great though...
You should have bought Serious Sam: The Second Encounter. Then bring some friends along, and turn up the difficulty. ^^

Because they make you think what to do next. Not just rush while shooting blindly around.
Well in some games it is fun to do that. When I played Halo:CE I enjoyed being virtually unstoppable. I enjoyed jumping off of a building and sniping two aliens on my way down. I like it when games are creative and unrealistic. It gets really boring playing game after game where you take a couple bullets and you die.

I like games that are larger than life because you escape realism. That's why I enjoy games like Banjo Kazooie, Halo:CE, Blitz: The League, and Prince of Persia: SOT. They allow me to do creative, FUN things that I'd never be able to do in my sad realistic life.

it would probably interest me, but having just played the new medal of honour beta i can honestly that realism to a point is great. But i just spent 20 minutes getting mortar'd to shit. I didnt really get to kill anyone and i didn't really get to explore much without a tank blasting me or a mortar storm opening up above my head. I think perhaps in enclosed buildings etc or smaller maps this thing would be ace. Otherwise it would be like every other game this has been tried in. You pick up a sniper rifle and you camp and hide hoping you dont get seen. Boring.
I miss the old fps's where you had 100 health/100 armour you get shot the number goes down and stays down. Unless you find a health pack which are fw and far between. Nothing annoys me more than in games like halo2/3 were you nearly kill someone only for them to run around a corner and get their hp back while either their team comes and kills you or they come out wit ha shiny laser cannon of doom in your face. The other thing, and this is aimed mainly at MW/MW2/MoH i hate advancement in FPS's, i mean seriously. To actually get a sniper rifle by its definition i have to kill people with a red dot sight first? are you serious? Sniper rifles do not come with those types of attachments, light support weapons yes ok, but sniper rifles? no. Unless you're SF you get the typical "stock" weaponry, if you are SF you get shown the armoury and get told to take something you like. Unless its completely impractical (such as a LAW for searching a house) no one is really going to knock your choice and you wont be subjecting to having to kill "XYZ" amount before you can use what you want anyway....

my my what a rant. I apologise. there was a meaning in there somewhere

I know, but even when I had it right down, I was still experiencing drift.

Here's my little bit of contribution. Armor. Many soldiers now a days wear armor (some "soldiers" don't...like the Somali Pirates. I don't think they wear armor.) Just thought I'd mention that. Also, I've been wanting a game like that as well though I would also (a little more contribution) make it so that you have to use actual first aid (aka "buddy aid") on your squadmates and yourself when someone gets shot. Also, (for engineering tasks) you have to solve a mini puzzle while avoiding enemy fire. How intense would that be? Too bad that most games are too "arcadey" and the "typical gamer" won't appreciate those moments yet favor unrealistic "arcade-style combat".

Those are jobs typical of "POGs" (Person Other than Grunt). A "Grunt" is an Infantryman, Rifleman (the USMC equivalent of a Infantryman), Sapper (a Combat Engineer, think Infantryman with more bombs and know-how to use them effectively), and "Health Care Specialist" (Combat Medic which, btw, was my MOS. MOS is a military job.) I'm not saying that those jobs aren't done by the above listed "combat jobs" but they aren't as every day as the video would have one believe.

Ya I like games like that ... Arma2 is the only real option though. Great mod community too, so you can take the realism even farther, or go all arcade.

Unfortunately there aren't any realistic games at all, and although your concept seems interesting, I play games to have fun, not to simulate how to really get killed.

I'd be willing to try it, but I doubt i would enjoy it.

Also, wouldn't "utterly realistic" mean that you only get one death? No saves, no checkpoints, no restarts. You die and the game automatically deletes itself.

As quite a few people have said ArmA2 is the way to go if your after this kind of thing, especaily with the ACE2 mod. You can get very imersed into the game when you get a good coop mission on the go, especialy when you pind down by enamy fire you wont want to stick you head up because it might get ventalated :( some of the best times ive had on ArmA is when you,ve gota do a runner from overwhelming enamys, or have to fight you way out.

Also the planing of what cover to move to whether to draw the enamy out to your position or going and sneaking you on the enamys armour and planing some satchels on them :)

(i just wish we could play the old Operation Flashpoint campaign in ArmA2 that would be amasing)

Just had another thort Project Reality for Battlefield 2 is pretty good too

ARMA 2 has you covered. Seriously, if you're carrying too much gear you get tired quickly, you can't aim if you're shot in the arm, and I lost my hearing for a few seconds because I stood behind a guy firing an RPG.

The graphics aren't amazing, but otherwise, it's pretty darn faultless.
