I'll admit it. I own Pokemon Pearl. It makes me feel like im nine again and playing red version. I do enjoy some of the new pokemon like Magnezone, but for every cool one there are two stupid ones like bidoof. If the start to go quality over quanity I will support the franchise.
You mean "Baidoof"?

Also, the worst has to be the new ledgendaries.

If they're so rare, why are there fourteen new ones in D/P/Pt?
They're not all really "legendaries". Just one-of-a-kind. Now, you wanna know a true legendary? A pokemon that's one of a kind and able to be effectively used in-game with little or no knowledge of the games deeper mechanics. In other words, the stuff little kids are likely to use.
Tell me about it. My young neighnour only uses a "Torterra". HIS STARTER.

Unlike my epic team.

Ok, is it just me or are the japanese, in the last two films at least, using Godzilla roars for the Pokemon. I swear that Palkia sounds like Rodan the giant pterodactyl and I know I've heard both Dialga and Giratina's roars from Godzilla monsters I just can't quite remember which ones they're from, it's been a while since I've seen a Godzilla movie. I guarantee that eventually they'll use Godzilla's raor for a Pokemon.

Out of the ones I played (Red, Yellow, Gold, Saphire, Crystal... oh god, some one shoot me) I think (from my sparse memary) that Gold was indeed the best. It was an improvement on the original, but didn't have all that feel good crap (pokemon personalities) and whatever that Saphire had.

Although I honestly think I may buy Platinum (or whatever the newest one will be).

Say... Don't these games usually come out in twos?
Shouldn't there be a... uhh... Carbon Fiber edition as well?

I've played Red, Silver, Fire Red and Pearl, and while no doubt the gameplay has improved dramatically, I still think that Silver was the best. The first 150 were pokemon were fantastic and the 100 extra in Silver only made it better, but now I feel like they're milking the franchise to hell. There are just too many pokemon now : (.

That comic pretty much sums up how I feel about Pokemon now. I've played Blue, Yellow, Silver, Sapphire, Leaf Green and Diamond and to be honest it's just ridiculous now. 251 was a good number, enough not to get too bored. But now Nintendo have beaten the horse so vigorously it's turned to mush. The only way I will ever buy another Pokemon game is if they remake Gold and Silver, but with only the first 251 Pokemon. Having a Mudkip in Johto would be heresy.

EDIT: Oops, forgot Sapphire in that list ^^;

Actually, that's a rumour right now.

And there's tons of hints in D/P.

Yeah I've seen a few of them such as Jasmine etc... Here's to hoping I guess. But much like the 11 year old girl waiting for her absentee father to come home with a pony, deep down I know that it's never going to happen.

It's just a matter of time ;P

Anyway, Platinum is to D/P as Emerald was to R/S... except platinum's a metal, a diamond is a cystalline carbon and pearl is... I'm not sure.

I know that they came out in 2's then a single. That pattern's still being repeated. R/B then Yellow, G/S then Crystal, R/S then Emerald, LG/FR (those don't count though because they are pretty much remakes), and finally D/P then Platinum.

I absolutely hate the new games though. They finally seemed to have ran out of inspiration. I mean, what's so original about a monkey that got lit on fire. Not only are the actual Pokemon losing originality but so are their names.

Honestly, I've been playing the series from the start and I feel the newest generation is the best yet, followed by Hoenn, Kanto, and Johto in dead last. I just can't think of any interesting pokemon from Johto, especially not the starters. Johto's starters were incredibly minimalist, having few details and changing very little as they evolved. Their heads seem to be the only part of their body to go through any major change. As if to add insult to injury the majority of them, starters included, had incredibly piss poor stats.

By the way, that vgcats comic strikes me as being a parody of people recalling the 'good old days' of pokemon, comparing people who think the first games were the best to a bunch of old men. Appropriate if you ask me. While the series hasn't deviated from the formula much (which is reason enough to question how any previous game could be better than the newer ones, since the newer ones still have the same features) its really come a long way. After beating the Elite Four in R/B/Y there was nothing to do except catching all the pokemon. G/S/C did little to change this too, choosing to drag the game out further instead of actually adding anything. It wasn't until R/S/E that they started adding in more mini-games and sidequests, and they expanded on this in D/P/Pt. The series has pretty much evolved into a sandbox rpg now, giving players a plethora of sidequests, mini-games, etc.

Playing pokemon just to get all the badges and beat the Elite Four is like playing GTA just to progress through its story mode, which is what some people seem to want given the way G/S/C's addition of Kanto is praised. It does seem quite likely that G/S/C will be getting a remake at this point, what with the poster for the next movie showcasing Johto's starters plus that 'notched ear Pichu', and I certainly hope they take the time to flesh the games out. Remodel the dungeons, LESS FETCH QUESTS, and either make going to Kanto worthwhile (maybe by, say, putting the Safari Zone back in) or remove it altogether. Also, the new pokemon need to be in it and available early. The only pokemon that were worth catching in G/S/C were the ones from the 1st generation...

I have also played every single game through on GBC and GBA.

By far my favorite was the Gold, silver, crystal generations. unique pokeballs from apricorns, phone numbers so people could call you for battles or when certain rare Pokemon were running and became common, Days of the week and unique occurrences on each day, Night time which had nocturnal pokemon appear. Chasing the legendary dogs all over hells creation (This was some of the greatest fun i have had in any game), and being able to travel in between Kanto and Johto.

Ruby, emerald, and sapphire felt soulless to me. Why did they drop so many aspects of G/S/C and not use them in the next generation? it wasn't like those game play elements i listed made the game worse, they MADE the game. I recently played fire red and leaf green and they were a good time for nostalgia of red and blue.

Anyone wishing to re-live these games should hit up a torrent site and get an emulator and download the game roms. you can replay any pokemon game on your PC.

Yeah, 2nd generation is clearly the best (2 whole areas!), Crystal in particular, I would rush out and immediately buy a DS remake of G/S/C.

Side point: don't you think it would have made more sense for it to go Gold / Silver / Platinum and Diamond / Pearl / Crystal ?

Another side point: anyone already starting taking stabs in the dark at what the next 2 will be? My money's on Carbon / Oxygen...

The last pokemon game I liked was Pokemon LeafGreen (which I play on my DS)

But Pokemon Silver was the best in my opinion.

The only noteworthy features dropped was the Bug Catching Contest, which was fun but a poor replacement for the Safari Zone, and Kurt's pokeballs. The rest was completely arbitrary. Trainers had an annoying habit of calling at the worst possible times, and only very rarely did they actually have something to say other than randomly generated dialogue. Kanto was completely devoid of purpose. Chasing around the legendary beasts was nothing but hours of frustration, after which I personally said I was never doing that again. But hey, if you actually liked that then guess what! They kept that in R/S/E, Fr/Lg, D/P, and have brought it up to FIVE in Platinum!

Having events on only certain days of the week is NOT something that should be missed either. All it did was place limits on what would have otherwise been perfectly good ways to pass the time. Like the Bug Catching Contest. Having one of those girls appear at different days of the week was fine but everything else was a pile of bullshit. Waiting until night for something wasn't as bad, but there was nothing going on at night anyway. And they did the whole day/night thing BETTER in D/P/Pt anyway since in most cases the pokemon only appear less frequently at different times of the day instead of ONLY at certain times of the day. They brought back a daily event in the 4th gen too, having Drifloon appear only on Friday.

G/S/C also had some of the most annoying dungeons and fetch quests. Kanto was bad enough, but they send you on a fetch quest while you're on the ride there? Thats pushing it. Team Rocket's base (G/S/C's Team Rocket are up there with the anime's Jesse and James for the "Pathetic Villains" award, btw) was another annoying one with statues that would trigger TWO trainer battles if you walked in front of them and floor that would trigger a battle with an exploding pokemon with each step. Both 'traps' only served to annoy and drag out the whole quest. Getting Lugia was also a pain since each of those damn caves in the Whirl Islands looked the same. I can't count how many times I went into the wrong cave looking for Lugia.

Nostalgia is pretty much the only thing G/S/C has over the 3rd and 4th generations. Nostalgia is also something it had in abundance. Go figure.

You bring up allot of valid points. The day of week system works great for someone with the time to play every day of the week (which i do not have now but did when i was a kid playing it). I didn't know they brought the night time feature back in the DS releases, that i have to say was one of the coolest things in the game. Personally i did like chasing the legendary dogs around, it made it very satisfying when i finally did wear them down over time and catch them (after going through the tedious process of mean look so they couldn't run and disable so they couldn't roar and scare my Pokemon away).

Like i said I have not played the DS releases, maybe they would have more to offer, but i still second what someone else on this thread said, if they leaf green fire reded G/S/C to the most current generations engine i would buy it in a blink.

We're on what now, the sixth generation, and still no emu Pokemon. If Nintendo wanted me to keep playing, they would hurry it up and make me a god damned emu Pokemon now. That being said, nothing they can do now will compare to the original 150 + Mew.
