Hahahaha, wow, the onion is so good at satire.

No seriously though, the only game on that list that I would consider at least above average is Fallout.
Um... Portal in on that list too.
You implying that I don't know my own opinion?

The Onion, for the uninitiated, is a satirical newspaper, but they also have a separate site, the AV Club, that reviews movies, music, and games.

So, they've ranked the 15 best games since 2000.

I know that many such lists have been posted on this site over the years, but this is perhaps the first "official" Game of the Decade list. For this decade, anyway.

[desperate rationalization and opinion] Also, they rank BioShock first, when I felt it was horribly overrated, and don't include Half-Life 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, or Demon's Souls. [/desperate rationalization and opinion]

Since this is a topic that's been done before, how about we also discuss our opinions of the AV Club, if we ever read their reviews?
Its a brave list, it's probably trying to go for a 'most important' type thing. Personally I didn't like Bioshock but it seems to have tickled enough people, 1st probably not and should go to the Half 2 saga BUT there are two other Valve games there so they may just be playing fair.

I really don't think any Metal Gear Solid games should be in the list for the fact its a list of 'games' not interactive segments between cut scenes.

There are some good games there, but it's sorely lacking. Where's Half-Life 2? Halo? Beyond Good and Evil? Metal Gear Solid 4? For that matter, what is Ico doing there and not Shadow of the Colossus?

Sigh...

Is it playing fair not to give the best developer their due props just because they happen to produce three of the best games of the decade? I'd say it is the opposite of fair...
I don't disagree with you on a particular point but there really is a challenge of what to put in and what to leave when doing a top ten, otherwise it becomes one of those bloated top 50s or so on.

Personally I'd put something like: HL2, Portal, Left 4 Dead, Braid, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, GTA Vice City, Counter Strike, Unreal II, Morrowind and Deus Ex. But that's just me. I don't even play MMORPGs, RTSs or JRPGs so me creating a top ten from the point of view of a magazine would require taking a step back.

Plus, as the magazine points out Left 4 Dead is helping build cooperation skills amongst what essentially amounts to a client base of racist 12 year old team killing sopranos.

I really don't like subjective lists that strut around acting like they're the 'right' answer. For example they put in Advanced Wars and FFXII as an enjoyable JRPG experience, but where the hell is Golden Sun?

Pretty solid list, though SSX 3 needs to be replaced with SSX Tricky. 3 was alright, but Tricky achieved a level of awesome that the series might never again reach.

They seem to have a dilettante's taste in games. No real deep understanding and are swayed by titles that have a certain type of appeal.

Bioshock just isn't that great of a game overall. Technically it is not a good game for the most part. The game design is all over the place and even it's strong point, story and characters, become deeply unsatisfying by the end. Half-Life 2 would have at least shown that they were paying attention as that is a much better game but Half-Life 2 is not exactly perfect in my opinion. Deus Ex was also released this decade, as were Timesplitters: Future Perfect and Halo: CE. Any of which would have marked this list out as something done by people who are really worth listening to.

Katamari Damacy is a great concept that was well executed and a breath of fresh air but it doesn't have that much to it and gets old quickly. In a decade full of games I don't think that many who have played a lot of games would really rate it as the second best overall.

I agreed with Portal, the only negative was that it was short. (But as Yahtzee said, "It didn't overstay its' welcome.") I don't understand why no Metal Gear Solids were on there though, I thought they were great.

I give this list points just for putting Final Fantasy XII on there. Best JRPG of the '00s, hands down.
