For me, it was in Valkyria Chronicles. I actually played that scene again for the wooman, who hates game drama and she was reaching for a tissue at the end.

Isara's death. Was kinda sudden, and I really liked the little kid and was happy she and Rose finally got along. The funeral was kinda annoying, but the feeling was still lingering.

Also, the Valkyrie chick's sacrifice was kinda sad, but would have had more impact if they have devoted a little more time to her character development.

Ending in Call of Duty 4 and half way to the end of Act 4 in MGS 4 made me choke up some tears.

Half Life 2:Episode 2 when Eli gets killed by the Adviser and the game ending with Alyx mourning over his body, sobbing for him to not leave her.
Use spoiler tags!!!
 I just got The Orange Box, and now I know this happens when I haven't even touched Episode 1!
Thanks...
Well, here's a hint sonny: if you don't want to know what happens in a game, and someone starts a sentence with the game's title in a thread about moments in a game, FUCKING SKIP OVER IT!!!

This. I hated Aerith/Aeris, I was more sad in FFX than I was in FFVII. :l

Anyone besides me ever played Fire Emblem 4? The whole game is rather depressing, as you spend most of it running around killing the friends and family members of your characters, but chapter 5 of that game is just flat out sad.

- Sigurd (the main character) has his father die in his arms
- You have to fight numerous relatives of people in your army
- Sigurd has to send his infant son away into hiding (it can be assumed that all your characters do this with their children)
- Cuan (Sigurds best friend) and Ethlin (Sigurd's sister and Cuan's wife) show up, only to be ambushed in the desert. Both are killed, and their daughter, a mere toddler, is taken away to be raised by their murderer
- When you finally kill all your enemies, you're brought before the crown Prince Alvis. Instead of being congratulated, Sigurd and his army get accused of high treason and are to be executed on the spot. Just before this, Alvis' new wife is brought out. She turns out to be none other than Sigurd's wife Deirdre, who has been brainwashed into only vaguely remembering Sigurd. She is allowed one glance as Sigurd desperately pleads with her to remember before she is dragged away and all your characters are killed. Sigurd far away from his son and with the knowledge that his wife does not remember him at all, and most of your army is killed without having the chance to say goodbye to their children.

Hmm My top (Bottom?) sad moments are listed here from what I can remember:
(in no particular order)
1- Half Life 2 Episode 2- WHY!!! How could you do it!

2- Mass Effect - I decided to rescue Ashley and left the K-dude (forgot his name :( ) to defend the bomb... *sniff*

3- COD4 - Two Moments: Nuke and Game Over..... Why Couldn't you Russians come earlier!

4- Bioshock, Good ending - That literally brought a tear to my eye... In a manly way.
4b- Bioshock - *spoiler*The different storys in the audio diarys... it doesn't turn out well for anyone. Cohen- goes mad. Sullivan - Commits suicide (after being forced to torture and murder). The immigrant family(forgot name) Loses daughter to Little Sister program, Commits sucide together in their apartment. Diane Mclintoc- Is wounded, recovers, is cast out by Ryan and then is (aparently) murdered by Fontaine :(

5- Another World (i think its called) - after all this effort our hero is carried off into the sunset... Forever lost and alone on another planet. A still rember a picture of him just standing on a rock looking over the landscape (probably) shouting "Whhhyyyy!" (BTW its a silent game so I don't know for sure o_O)

Yeah I'll stop now

When, after getting all 120 stars in Super Mario Galaxy, finding out that the much vaunted "unlock" was the ability to play as Luigi.

Fail.

MGS4 beauty stories.
CoD4 when the nuke goes off, and the aftermath.

The most memorable scene is the end of FF7:CC in the last everlasting battle.
Seeing the memories of the people you have met disappear. Knowing that you wont
be able to hold out but trying anyway. And then the final cut-scenes.

I know i was crying both during the battle and the cut-scenes.

The award has to go to the end of HL2 Episode 2, I think.

Honorable mentions:

The moment the Chrysalis opened and you saw Kerrigan.

Kingdom Hearts has some great ones. Sora's sacrifice is amazing, as is the ending sequence. I also have a soft spot for the end of Kingdom Hearts 2,

Where Ansem, in an attempt to atone for his sins, detonates the Kingdom Hearts Encoder to stop Xemnas. Mickey tries to stop him but he insists that this is what his heart is telling him to do. Honestly? That should have been the end of the game. You should have fought Xemnas, and then Ansem appeared and sacrificed himself to stop him.

The saddest moment I've ever seen in a video game was the ending to Dead Space. Just before the game ends Issac Clarke takes off his helmet and the look on his face is one of complete hoplessness. Then he looks over to see his dead girlfriend again, only this time shes not dead, shes a zombie and she kills him.
Worst day ever.

Also the nuclear explosion and the ending in Call of Duty 4 take 2nd place.
