I think the game Infamous (That new 09' game) had a good sad scene if you choose to sacrifice your girlfriend and instead save the 5 doctors for good karma ending to that mission.

But I also think that Metal Gear Solid 4 had the saddest SH*T EVER!!!........after beating each Beauty Boss you get a whole story about how they became the bosses.......I felt sad when I listened to how Crying Wolf had to kill her own baby sibling to avoid being caught, or even when Laughing Octopus had to butcher her family and friends while being forced to laugh.

(I almost cried, and I almost never cry during games I usually laugh at the ironic or predictable deaths instead)

Jim's death in GTA IV:TLAD. Seriously, he was my favorite character in the GTA series, he had a wife and kid, AND he was a bad-ass. He doesn't even die on-screen. After that, and when they burn the clubhouse down. Very sad, indeed.

For me it was in Ace Combat Squadron Leader when Chopper crashes his aircraft in the stadium and dies.

Alright, alright, but my own dog had just died the day before. I had to put the game away and go and look at xkcd until I felt better.

Man I fucking love the end of that. I hope in the training mission for the sequel we get Major Price in a wheelchair or something. But still, no coming back for Gaz...

Seriously everyone, use your spoilers. It's not hard, and one of my friends was really really enjoying KotOR when someone told him that
he was Revan

BioShock's good ending, when Jack takes all the Little Sisters to the surface and raises them as his own. And on his deathbed, the now grown Little Sisters are all around him in his last moments of life. (nearly made me cry.)

Half Life 2:Episode 2 when Eli gets killed by the Adviser and the game ending with Alyx mourning over his body, sobbing for him to not leave her.

Call of Duty 4:Modern Warfare at the end of the mission "Game Over" when all your fellow squadmates are dying all around you, and when you finally kill Imran and are airlifted away as you see a medic desperately trying to resuscitate Price as your vision fades to white.

I'm not sure the exact moments, but I had a lot of sad moments in Planescape: Torment. The game did such a good job of making you care about the characters that even my cold jaded heart bled a little when I heard the the truth behind the characters, including the Nameless One. Some of it actually brought a tear to my eye. I can't think of another game that has shaken me so much. I can't even begin to describe it; you'll have to play through yourself (good luck finding a copy...).

This is as opposed to Fallout 3, where you sacrifice yourself, and all I could think of was: "Bullshit! I have 85% rad resist and enough Rad Away to replace all of my blood, and a gun big enough to blast open fucking Fort Knocks! How the HELL am I insta-dead??" so much for tearful sacrifices.

Some fucking how, God of War also made me a little sad for Kratos' poor murdered family, even though I was laughing every time I cut up some bystander for a healing orb.

Chrono Trigger.
When Crono sacrifices himself to save everyone. Few games before or since have had the main character do something that causes his own storyline death. Of course, the impact was somewhat lessened by the "Back to the Future" nature of the series, but that whole bit was completely optional. Crono could stay dead the entire game if one was so inclined.
Forgot about that one. That was pretty well done.

What game is that from?

And I would have to say...
<spoiler=STAR WARS KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC>
When Bastilla was kidnapped and turned evil after torture. I really cared about her, and when I got the chance to rescue her from the Dark Side, I did it without hesitation. AND I still got her as a romance partner! Not that it would matter, it was at the very end of the game anyway.

The Longest Journey's ending:

You aren't the chosen one despite everyone having told you that you are and despite the fact that your entire life has been destroyed beyond repair in the expectation that you were the proverbial 'chosen one' needed to save space and time and all the usual stuff. Nevermind the fact that your home is lost to you, you've been led to believe your friends are either dead or hate you, the government wants you dead and so on. You don't even get the usual heroes welcoming thing since no one but a select few even know you saved anything. So where is there left to go at the end of the game? You aren't needed anymore. Time to wander off into the distance towards an uncertain fate as sad music plays in the background.

No wonder April (Hero from the game above) is such a ***** in Dreamfall: The Longest Journey. I would be too if I'd be screwed over that hard by the universe. I mean really... Oh yeah, and Dreamfall's ending was just as bad too I might add, if not worse.

Did you stop the evil guys? No, not at all really. How about save the world? kinda, except no one knows you did, again. But at least you've still got a home right, better than April got! Except that this time rather than wandering off into the distance, the protagonist is wasting away in a hospital room, trapped in a coma after being betrayed. Oh and April from the first game? She's been stabbed and possibly killed, all her friends are dead (again) and her (new) home is destroyed (again).

Oh, and April was beaten as a child by an abusive alcoholic father, so she doesn't even have any happy childhood memories. Seriously.

Such a cheerful series!
I second this! I loved those games, but WTF where is the next one??? You can't end Dreamfall like that and not have a third game and its been 5 F***ing years!

Also since no one has mentioned this, I thought it was sad when we had to incinerate the companion cube in Portal . . . its mean to kill something that is so innocent and has an adorable heart painted on it :(

EDIT: sorry for the double post . . . I honestly thought that someone else would have posted in between my comments

Personally, I'd say the end of Myst III:

When you trap Savvedro between the shield walls in Narayan and force him to give up Releeshan. When he thinks that you've trapped him there forever, he just goes to pieces. I was borderline crying during that scene. It was such a powerful ending when you open the outer shield for him and he waves at you before returning home.

A credit to Brad Dourif's acting ability.

When Corporal Hart dies toward the end of Timesplitters 2. She had next to no development, but I still felt it hit hard when that damned splitter got her.
"This one's for you, baby..."

Also:

In Half-Life 2 when you have to leave Father Grigori to fight all those zombies by himself. It's not really all that sad, per se, but I can't help but feel bad for the guy. If he isn't dead, I pray to god that he'll make a cameo in Episode 3.

Square's games have a tendency to really get to me.

FF7- Red XIII discovers the truth. Aerith's death was NOWHERE near as sad as this in my book.
FF8- Rinoa in space. That entire section.

Kingdom Hearts- Dear god, the ending on this one is so heartwarmingly tragic.

During Metal Gear Solid 2, when one of the main characters was killed off by vamp.

I cried like a little *****, and even after the scene was done, how Hal was affected kept me crying. God I loved that game. Maybe I'll go play it again.
