Dear Escapees,
This thread isn?t going to talk about how lame high school is, or whether girls like nerdy guys, or any OMG, WTF or BBQ, even though every once in a while it is nice to have a good hot dog. It is also not going to talk about how society sucks because of old men wracked with age and 50?s values dominating office, or how getting a BJ makes you a good president. It?s not even going to be about the (rampant) elitism on here, at least, not strictly.
This thread is going to focus on making the Escapist Magazine forums a more pleasant place to post. As I read a few days ago by a majority of posters, these forums are considered something to waste time with when one is bored. Is that really the best thing for everyone? Wouldn?t you all rather this be a place where people come even when they aren?t bored? A looked-forward to destination? Personally I, and I know a lot of others as well, only came to this place because we saw or heard of Yahtzee somewhere and decided as an afterthought to join these forums, because some of the threads look mildly interesting. I?ll tell you why no real conversations ever get started on these boards, or if they do, how rare they are.
A conversation is something Escapees do not seem to understand. We view each thread topic as simply a poll, where posters after us will read through all the results and post their own. The catch to this is, I get an overwhelming sensation that nobody ever reads anyone else?s posts, and even if they do, they seldom reply to anything anyone else has said. This is observable by the high amount of repeated responses in threads, or the generally unrelated comments from post to post. Other than explicit poll threads, I did not come on here to read a census. I came here to be part of a discussion where I, and others, will read and respond with insight to others? comments, whether those comments be positive, negative or controversial in nature. This doesn?t mean saying ?fuck you, you spelled ?grammar? wrong, retard!?(although it would be nice to see people learning the difference between than and then, ex: I like Turok better than Assassin?s Creed 2; I easily beat Assassin?s Creed 2, then used it as a coaster while I played Turok.) No! There is very little going on here in the way of insight, or generally giving a fuck about other people?s opinions. I guess this could go back to the dreaded topic of elitism.
I guess a lot of Escapees are smart, or at least think they are. That?s all good, but when you go on assuming that you?re smarter than 95% of the population around you, you tend to become a bit of a pretentious ass. Which, I see, is what a lot of people here are. Ever see those responses that are one sentence long, or even just a few words, with no quoted material, just trying to be extremely witty and conceited? Well, that?s what I?m talking about. Everyone is trying to seem so damn smart and unique to everyone else, with their self-proclaimed coolness stemming from their self-diagnosed psychological problems, that the whole thread ends up just being a huge clusterfuck of fail. You guys know exactly what I am talking about, and I fully expect the same thing to happen in this thread to an extent too, even though it will bug me and probably make me want to punch a hole through my new LCD monitor.
So, Escapees, do understand that I am not attacking you, your way of life, or how you interact with other people. Well, I guess I sort of am. I?m still a relative n00b to this site, but it seems that the ?golden age? has already passed, as was mentioned in a thread I read a few months ago. These forums are just starting to seem... boring. No one gives a shit about anyone else. You look at any popular, interesting website, people give a shit about what each other say. Even look at 4chan, and all the faggotry that implies. No matter how disgusting or inappropriate or stupid their material or subject matter is, it?s more interesting than here because they care--well, no. They acknowledge the members of that community. This feels like a void or something, where you dump comments into cyberspace and someone is expected to come around vacuuming them all up, storing them in some book nobody will ever read.
I?m guessing that a lot of people here are going to tell me to stop whining, or to just go to 4chan, or something stupid along those lines. But do you really think that the ?golden age? here depended on who used this site, as opposed to the way people used it? We can bring back an age better than whatever the previous golden one was. You can listen to each other and state your insightful comments and show that high IQ that so many of you profess to have, so don that monocle and get out that decanter of whiskey. I guess that?s all for now, Escapees. Stay classy.
Sincerely,
Opiate Chicken
