That thing is crazy, I have a deep seated hatred of spiders already but, Christ that thing is a monster.
And you know what?
They don't grow very big, either. About the size of an Australian dollar coin. Used to deal with these where I lived in NSW -- they're very common.
There is a spider around these parts that flourishes, which is funny because we are a bit south of it's "habitat" as listed in most resources I can find. I am not an expert but its the only spider anywhere near here that grows to the same size so it's probably it and not one of it's close relatives.
It's the Giant brown house spider. They live in your house, make funnel webs, and grow to a nice little size of four and a half inches. The nicest thing, when they start getting over a couple of inches in size they have a hard time climbing smoother walls (and some they cannot climb at all) and more then once I have had a 3+ inch spider fall off the ceiling onto me. Sure, they are not very harmful to humans, but their cousins the hobo spider certainly can be.

The worst we have round here are bears, mountain lions, wolves, and coyotes in the mountains. We DO have hobo spiders though, those can be a bit of a *****.
Speaking of hobo spiders, did you know they are actually incredibly docile, only biting when massively provoked or protecting an egg sac. You can usually pick one up without worries, they usually only bite if you pick them up and try to squish them. Still it sounds like you live near where I do, geographically speaking.
I shot a coyote not to long ago as well. I find them more dangerous then bears and cougars. At least with those other two people are far more cautious around them, and they are less likely to be familiarized to the point they no longer fear people. An animal that doesn't fear people that isn't domesticated is very unpredictable.
