Strangely enough I've never seen any SFW during my visits north but apparently they are starting to move south into Victoria, which worries me greatly. Seen plenty of Redback spiders (of the Black Widow genus for all you Americans out there) outside the house but they are so goddamn lazy you'd have to poke them with your finger to get bitten.

I am soo glad I live in Ireland now... The scariest thing we have are deer. On the rare chance you'd actually see one.

Bah ... all Australian animals (and flora) are HARMLESS ... the only thing I fear in Australia is the Irukandji ... it kills you by pain( and the subsequent drowning caused by the worst pain you will ever feel in your entire life).

And the best thing about the irukandji is that the poison that causes the intense pain won't even be touched by morphine :D

Irukandji syndrome in fun :3 You haven't felt nothing until you've been stung by the irukandji jellyfish n.n Death by pain .... fun :D Oh yeah, and to make matters worse ... one symptom of Irukandji syndrome is also 'an unknowable feeling of DOOM' ...

So it's not just being poisoned, it's also being mindfucked whilst poisoned.

Imagine if you could synthesise the toxin into a poisonous dart? #.#

That thing is crazy, I have a deep seated hatred of spiders already but, Christ that thing is a monster.
And you know what?

They don't grow very big, either. About the size of an Australian dollar coin. Used to deal with these where I lived in NSW -- they're very common.

Since the development of anti-venom back in 1980, there have been no recorded fatalities by this species of spider.

Source: Fisher M, Raftos J, McGuinness R, Dicks I, Wong J, Burgess K, Sutherland S (1981). "Funnel-web spider (Atrax robustus) antivenom. 2. Early clinical experience". Med J Aust 2 (10): 525?6. PMID 7321948.

not sure if this has already been mentioned but there is a funfact you left out regarding funnel web spiders, bug spray does not kill them, only makes it angry

also necrotic means that the affected area suffers necrosis, in laymans terms all the affected flesh and muscle simply rots and dies

The worst we have round here are bears, mountain lions, wolves, and coyotes in the mountains. We DO have hobo spiders though, those can be a bit of a *****.

There is a spider around these parts that flourishes, which is funny because we are a bit south of it's "habitat" as listed in most resources I can find. I am not an expert but its the only spider anywhere near here that grows to the same size so it's probably it and not one of it's close relatives.

It's the Giant brown house spider. They live in your house, make funnel webs, and grow to a nice little size of four and a half inches. The nicest thing, when they start getting over a couple of inches in size they have a hard time climbing smoother walls (and some they cannot climb at all) and more then once I have had a 3+ inch spider fall off the ceiling onto me. Sure, they are not very harmful to humans, but their cousins the hobo spider certainly can be.

Speaking of hobo spiders, did you know they are actually incredibly docile, only biting when massively provoked or protecting an egg sac. You can usually pick one up without worries, they usually only bite if you pick them up and try to squish them. Still it sounds like you live near where I do, geographically speaking.

I shot a coyote not to long ago as well. I find them more dangerous then bears and cougars. At least with those other two people are far more cautious around them, and they are less likely to be familiarized to the point they no longer fear people. An animal that doesn't fear people that isn't domesticated is very unpredictable.
