Before TDK, I never would have believed the Joker could unleash such devastation. He had no gimmicky gas or powers, was armed only with knives and somehow could tussle with the Batman. His greatest weapon in TDK was the most underplayed in previous outings; his sentience of his own insanity.

Considering that, I believe the Riddler, given the same reimagining of the other Nolan-verse villains, would make an excellent follow-up. Selecting Johnny Depp, given his filmography and style, to play the Riddler isn't a decision that could be outdone.

Interesting note to consider about Black Mask, in TDK a prisoner on the boat (played by Tommy Lister) can be seen with tattoos on his neck with the design and pattern of The Black Mask.

I'm not saying it confirms Black Mask, but Nolan's vision of Batman is more subtle and could be an indicator.

Also, fuck Catwoman, I vote Angelina Jolie for the role of Harley Quinn. I cite her breakout role in the movie Gia to support my opinion. Gia proved Jolie could play understated insane.

The Riddler would be really cool, but I have to say that because they've already been done, it's just retread of the old franchises.

Your argument is disingenuous, FrankDux. The Joker and Harvey/Two-Face have appeared in previous Batman films, technically making them both a retread of the old franchise, as you say.

Agreed, but Penguin is REALLY stupid... I mean he's a fat guy with trick umbrellas, he'd take A LOT of work.

Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy definately won't be in for a long time, too many bad memories from Batman & Robin, they're also a little too Super Powered for the new Batverse.
Stupid??? He's rich and has a skin defect, and, yeah, he might have a fetish for penguins, but how does that make him stupid. Plus, his umbrella's like totally rad, dude. Surf's up!

Since Heath kinda, y'know, killed himself, it's gonna be hard to have another person take his place. I'm not saying that they definitely would include him in the third film, but they could at least, y'know, toss'm in there. And yes ***SPOILERS UP THE ARSE*** it sucks that Harvey and Susan were both killed off. But that scene did show something about Batman. About the choices he has to make, and the consequences he has to live with for the rest of his life.

EDIT: They should totally re-cast Tommy Lee Jones as Two-Face. Who's with me?

I don't know if someone has said this already becuase i can't be bothered to read everything, but i think they could do more with Ra's Al Ghul. There's the whole lazarus pit thing that he had going on. One of his little minions could have recovered his mortally wounded body and heal him using a lazarus pit. We never saw a corpse did we, we just assumed he was dead. Ra's was always a brilliant villian in the comics.

I think the riddler. He could be a bit like the guy in Die Hard 3 who makes McClain monkey about with water bottles to disarm a bomb.

Actually, come to think of it, I'd love to see The Riddler. The only problem is he's a lot like Joker.
I think if they did the Riddler as more of the detective role and as a counter to Batman it would work. He just can't be as zany as Jim Carrey was.

Yeah, stay away from the Jim Carrey style and make it more of a dark psychotic serial killer who leaves clues in the form of riddles at the crime scene and it'll have a chance of turning out alright, as long as they get the actor right.

Yeah, I think the Riddler would be great as the next batman villian.

Also i think Bane would make a great Villian but possibily as a minor villian maybe with Riddler as the major...now that would be a movie worth watching.

Also, in the Dark Knight did anyone get the feeling that Bruce really didn't want to be Batman anymore? This could possible be more indepth in the Third Batman.

Finally, how long would it be until the new Batman was realsed not that i'm impatient to see it just wondering.

I'm looking towards having Catwoman as a minor antagonist (not villain, because she's merely out for herself, not out for chaos like Ra's and the Joker). Angelina Jolie does not seem right for the part. Just watch Mr. and Ms. Smith and tell yourself she could be Catwoman. For bonus points watch it while imagining Christian Bale in Brad Pitt's role. Point is, yes to Catwoman, no to Angelina Jolie as Catwoman.

As for the main villain, there are plenty of non mainstream villains in the Batman universe. For instance, the casual Batman fan really wouldn't have known Ra's al Ghul before Batman Begins, case in point, myself. As long as nolan is at the helm, I'm sure it'll be great, even if "it's no Dark Knight."

Bane could work out.
Catwoman, the penguin, and the riddler seem to surreal to make a good movie that runs with the series.

remember the guy that the joker said needed to be killed or a hospital would be blown up? theres ur riddler
Actually, it was the Joker saying that the man who was going to reveal Batman's identity should be killed, or else he would blow up a hospital. That's why people were trying to kill the guy that was about to reveal, and why it was the Joker that blew up the hospital.
you just said the exact same thing i said

Right, having read through various posts, I thought I'd add my two-cents:

*snip*
Ahhh... now there's an idea... Ron Perlman as Bane as you've described could indeed work. And you've given me something to think about with the Riddler, certainly. Perhaps Nolan would go with a slightly more obscure villain with number 3, like he did with Ra's Al Ghul in BB, possibly with a big name villain as well.

I think two face will be returning, you may scoff but the mob boss fell further and didn't die.

Because the bad guys are sitting in lairs complete with henchmen any more, they are merely twisted people, the ability to just burn through them has increased.

In the old franchises they were only defeated after crowds of henchmen and super henchmen were beaten and the girl saved, now its just one guy whose really pissed. Therefore they need to be really inventive and convoluted like with the joker or just waste the bad guys really fast. They barely had scare crow in the first film, i felt that he and two face were not given the proper attention.

How do you guys think Batman will redeem himself to the people of Gotham and the G.C.P.D? The ending was good, and it certainly will make the sequel interesting, even though Batman will now kind of be like Spider-Man, what with the general public hating him.
