Mind Game. I win the thread.
If you're looking for a something which is bewildering and abstract, I would definitely agree. However, I think that Evangelion is not only strange on the surface, but is much more philosophically esoteric.

That's a tough call. FLCL was pretty messed up but so was Paranoia Agent. I'm going to give it to Paranoia Agent due to the fact there was an episode where 2 men and a kid try to kill themselves.

Eva, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni and everything from that storyline, Kampher, Cat Soup (has any body else mentioned this?), Seikon no Quasar, Revalusanerey squid girl, Franken Fran, Yakitate Japan, Maji Bura!?, Yomeiro Choice, Serial experiments lain and Paprika.

Yes I know some are manga, but still! And once again behold my knowledge and blah blah blah.

Well, considering what others have posted, I think I'm quite...sheltered, for lack of a better term.

Animaniacs. Why? Simple.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann! By the end, galaxies are used as weapons, and even the main character only has the vaguest idea of how it all works, he's just too stubborn to give up
Ah yes, how could it be possible for Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann to have not been mentioned on the 1st page? If I'm wrong about that, then nobody need bother correcting me.

I could count Gantz, as the show gave you a sense of fear of the unknown powers that were at work. I haven't read the manga, only seen the anime, so that is what I'm talking about. There was no real explanation concerning Mr. Gantz, nor why he possessed the technology he had or his motives. The brutal and gruesome fates of the characters added to the fear, as they were ordinary people who had been given absolutely no explanation as to why they were there and what half of the shit they were given did. The best way to creep yourself out while watching that show was to imagine yourself being apart of the action. And yes it had copious amounts of fanservice, but that's not the point.

I don't watch much anime, but for the weirdest ones I've seen, I'd have to go with Urotsukidôji 1 and 2. Why? Giant demon peckers tearing up streets and cities, exploding nurses (if you've seen it, you know what I mean), and the Nazi Death Rape Machine.

Seriously, to the creators of this franchise... WTF?

Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt. The ending of the first season will cause your brains to leak out of your ears. You know this to be true:

PANTY AND STOCKING SPOILERS

I will have to say this one. That anime was also hilariously awesome

I'm a bit surprised by the contents of this thread, actually. A lot of the anime mentioned wouldn't be considered weird (by me, at any rate).

However, I like one person's categorising anime by weird-comedy and weird-drama. I personally consider something with seemingly no internal consistency to be weird, which automatically eliminates Lain, TTGL, and Madoka.

For the weird-drama, I'd have to say Eva. It was fun, then suddenly WHAT THE FUCK. I'm still surprised that I'm an anime fan after watching that.

For the weird-comedy... the weirdest would be Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. It might fall under random, like Nichijou, but when you have a ten-minute segment where each character changes voice actor after one line, and where they have gag dubs, as well as gag SUBS, in an earlier segment in the same episode (the gag dub was all the voice actors going "boobooboobeeboo" for ten minutes, and the subs were about Goku trying to find the Dra○○○balls, while the ACTUAL episode is about a guy dressed as Commodore Perry opening EVERYTHING), and your main character is a suicidal teacher teaching a class of misfits, psychopaths, and one normal girl, then you've got a weird show. Runners-up would be Puni Puni Poemi, which was Excel Saga condensed into an hour, and Cromartie High School, where one character was a robot (which nobody, least of all him, noticed), another was a gorilla, and another was Freddie Mercury, and a discussion about lazy animators was accompanied by the same five-second scene of the characters walking across the screen, which then REWOUND while they continued talking normally.

Bo-bo-bo-bo-bo-bo-bo.

Of course, it was intended to be "the weirdest anime you have ever seen." That was its shtick.

The early episodes were hilarious, though.

Strangely, Fooly Cooly is the most awesome but weird anime I've ever watched.
It's not too odd once you look at it from the angle of metaphors about growing up. However even then it's still preety off the wall.
(Also Fooly Cooly is a slang term for fondling breasts)

I'd say Welcome to the NHK was bizare at times; though nothing on PSG or that one anime(or was it a manga) about a lamp post that loves a man.

Gantz is a toss up since it plays ridiculous circumstances completely straight. (it wouldn't surprise me if some other team fought the Easter Bunny, and, of course, took massive casualties.

There's also Shuffle, which I'm pretty sure changed hands between seasons judging by the jarring shift of tone. This show doesn't drive people insane, it shows that they were never sane to begin with. Still, there is no reason to watch the first season.

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei or Princess Tutu (Though I've only seen about 8 episodes of the latter).

This is one of the most surreal movie experiences i've ever had. I don't know even if this was good movie or not.

i have not seen that many but Kampher is very odd.
It is like ranma
but there is a serious overtone and lesbianism and gender bending.
