So here is my theory
I think that the G-Man is the actual administrator for Black Mesa, and that Breen was just put there cus the G-Man likes to be super mysterious and stuff and can actually teleport himself across the universe and crazy ass stuff like that. In the original half life you see him with a Black Mesa Briefcase and so i got to thinking.

Anyway, give me your rebuttal and your alternate theories if you should feel so inclined.
I think the G-Man is a character bought in without much thought so pople would go, who is that!?

The G-man seems like the iconic Man in Black minus sunglasses, if you've ever heard about the original reports of men in black, they dress in suits and speak improperly, as if they aren't actually human.
Thats always been my guess.
He is the embodiment of all the MiB stories:
Appears from nowhere.
Tall, pale and sinister.
Always wears a black suit.
Has trouble mimicking human behaviour.

Like most people though, I never want a full explanation, cause I like the guessing.

He's a Pedophile XD *just joking*. No..,seriously I think he's just some guy. Best not to speculate as valve will just make him somthing we're completely not expecting when they reveal his true identity.

He is glados's husband. That why he has the portals
Or. Or Or! He is Chell's son. Portal took place before Half Life, and the portal gun fused with Chell's DNA. It is a side effect that the Portal Gun has. Chell and her yet to be named husband then have their son Gman, who inherited the ability to make portals from his loving mother Chell. It all makes sense now!

I'm sure I've posted this before, but hey. The G-Man is actually...
Geoff Freeman, Gordon's evil twin brother. They were separated at birth; Geoff went to Xen whereas Gordon went to Earth. So now you know. The truth is finally out.
Geoff, why did you Betray me?
-Gordan Freeman's Last (And First) Words.

G-Man is a cyborg from Aperture! Glados took one of the many dead bodies and found a way to electrically stimulate and control his brain hence the strange speech patterns and ability to teleport! This technology was also used to create the zombies in Left 4 Dead and Glados is the director who fucks you over just when you're doing good.

It's so obvious guys. Now there is only one question. Do zombies eat cake? If so...will there be cake?

(Anyone who didn't pick up on my sarcasm please post your address where you will have a crotch-kicking gnome air-packaged to you)

I don't want to solve the mystery of the G-Man. What makes him such a popular character is his obscurity, vagueness, and trans-human nature. To demystify that is not in my interests as far as the game's story goes.
Sorry but ITS gonna happen want or not(I would hate it too.)

I just wish the story comes to a "believable" end in the world they created, I dont want to fight Nazis in the finale.

The G-Man's description in Half Life 2 (I believe), located in the character files, is "misunderstood servant of the people".

Which leads me to believe that he is a member/remnant of a powerful shadow government, who gained access to Aperture Sciences' unique developments in teleportation, dimensions and other such unknown ultra-tech.

His power bolstered by technology and his ambitions hidden, he soldiers on in the name of his cause, whatever it may be.

G-man, simply put, is the best model in the multiplayer HL. That's all he really needs to be.

More on topic, however, G-man is some agent from some agency (Assuming government) who watches Gordon's progress. It seems obvious that Gordon is essential to whatever future plans his agency has.

About the speech stutters: I personally, after reading through this and remembering what he sounds like, believe he may be some sort of hologram-like image, perhaps appearing only to Gordon (Tho in HL1 it does look like he is speaking to one of the scientists before the "accident"). It does make some sense. It is by no means the only plausible explanation.

I think that maybe he is a person watching a big experiment. He gave Gordon the specimen to observe what happens to the Earth when aliens are introduced. He's just watching what happens so he could report to his government the effects of the "Test".

So... I was watching mythbusters, and they showed this 'fake' footage they made. Where they took a solved rubix cube. And mixed it up. They showed the footage backwards, making it look like they solved it.

Now this got me thinking... Hey, what if they spoke backwards at hte beginning to make it seem more 'real'?

This directly reminded me about this thread...

What if the G-Man is experiencing time backwards, and has to speak 'backwards' for us to understand him, thus why he sounds so 'inhuman'...

very interesting, however he wouldnt be able to pronounce consonants properly. To give it a try run\ sndrec32.exe (all 32bit windows have it) record something and reverse it (under effects) you will understand what i meant :)

I've done that in the past before. The real issue is you just have to 'learn' how to pronounce a word backwards...

I mean hell, I remember they used this very same concept for 'merlin'.

I have no strong theory but if G Man was Gordon from the future, why would he be mad when the vorts saved Alyx in HL2? Just saying.
