Hmm...I played VII first but my favorites are VI and VIII.
Maybe it's just which ever one has a story you can identify with at the time?

You have a good hypothesis, but it'll need more refinement and testing. You may want to start observing the current age of your participants, the age the participants interacted with their first Final Fantasy, stuff like that.

I'm 24, and I played 6 when I was 14. It is not my favorite but by no means the most hated. I prefer Tactics and 12 for the political storylines (although I immensely love Tactics' gameplay and 12's is mediocre) and 5 for gameplay and cheesiness.

Does Kingdom Hearts count? If so, you are spot on. If not, then the first Final Fantasy I played was VII, which was good enough, but XII is my favourite, due to its lack of random battles.

First to play was either Tactics or 9 (probably 9, but I truly can't remember). Yes, it was my favorite, but that only really came about after replaying it recently (up until then, 10 was my favorite).

FF1 is my favorite and also the first I played.

I don't think that the first is necessarily going to be some one's favorite since their first could be something awful like 3 or 13 but I think it does give the game +1.

Final Fantasy 13 has been the only game in the series I have played and I still can't bring myself to play it. If that is as good as it will get, then I shouldn't buy anymore from henceforth.

Nope, not at all. The first Final Fantasy that I played was 12, but I hated that and it put me off from the series. (Even though I put over 70 hours into it) My lover got me back into the series and my favorite is now FF9.

No. Final Fantasy 13 isn't as good as it will get. If you're looking for a Final Fantasy that is as good as it will get, get yourself 6, 7, 9, or 10. All of them are great, even if 7 is overrated and overhyped. Anything past 10 officially doesn't exist. I've also heard that Tactics is great.

Well it's pretty much like that for me. I first played 7 and was immediately in love with it. I didn't care much for 8 but I didn't HATE it. I loved 9, and I really haven't played any of the other ones. But I love 7 and love 9 and I can tolerate 8.

No. FF XII was my first, and even though I like it more than most people I know, it's far from my favorite. FF IX takes the cake, and it's the third to last I played.

Order I played them in: XII, IV, V, VI, I, II, VII, VIII, X, IX, III, XIII
Order of preference: IX, VI, X, V, VIII, IV, XIII, XII, I, VII, III, II

Crystal Chronicles was the first I played and I like it slightly more than XII. XII is definitely a better game but I find the co-op on Crystal Chronicles to be fun as hell.

I believe this to be false.

I played the Final Fantasy Games in this order
Final Fantasy - Finished
Final Fantasy IV(2 in the USA) - Finished, Favorite
Final Fantasy Mystic Quest - Finished
Final Fantasy VI(3 in the USA) - Finished
Final Fantasy VII - Finished
Final Fantasy VIII - Got bored with it and quit
Final Fantasy Tactics - Finished, Runner up for favorite
Final Fantasy IX - Couldn't finish due to missing last disk
Final Fantasy XI - Boring MMO
Final Fantasy X - Need to find either my memory card, start over, or give up
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance - Finished
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance A2 - Finished, much better than Advance 1
Final Fantasy II - Kind of gave up
Final Fantasy III - Kind of gave up

final fantasy was my first Final fantasy game. the crown for greatest epic of all time was FF VI. I still plug in my snes to play it. I have to say though, I've liked most of them. the MMO's I won't play because it defeats the purpose of a final fantasy games. I didn't really like 8 and absolutely hated 13.

VIII Was my first. My favorite as it stands. (VI comes up behind it really really close.)

Though my first FF game (one that carried the name anyway) was FF Adventure, but that's where FF broke into the Mana series, so it doesn't count in my book as FF.

I played the FF series all out of whack. (Numbered as US versions)
8 1 2 3 9 5 4 12 6 11(yes the online) 7 10 13

Truly though of all of them only 2 remains my least favorite.

This is obviously false, I doubt most of those who played the first Final Fantasy has it being their favorite in the series...
