I hate how people just assume I have a Facebook/MySpace/Twitter/etc.
This. I also don't text, and some people have the gumption to tell me that I need these things. That drives me nuts.

Ok so recently I was going through various comment sections and forums and time and time again I notice that many US citizens tend to assume everyone else is from the US. This baffles me I don't get why I only ever see it in people from the US. It drives me insane it is like these people assume the rest of the world doesn't exist or is so obsolete they don't get the net. How about you guys what do people assume that drives you insane?
I think that may be because for the most part, American media don't acknowledge the rest of the world as part of its audience. Forums and online games are the first place I had much contact with Europeans while in the US. I met a few more while in college, but forums are still the main thing.

It may be different in Europe because, aside from the UK, you share more borders with each other and have that whole EU thing going on, so you HAVE to acknowledge the presence of other countries. We just have Canada and Mexico. One is like a shy roommate that stays in its room all day and is easily forgotten for months at a time, the other we have a complex and awkward history and present with and try not to think about too much.

OT: It drives me nuts when people assume things about what a group believes or wants without actually learning the first thing about said group, or assuming that since I like or dislike one thing that a group likes, that I like or dislike everything that group likes.

I also dislike it when advertisers assume I give a damn about their campaigns. No, your product is not that special, your ad is not that important. No one needs to know about your DishTV offer who isn't going to look it up themselves. Quit being a marketer and do something useful.
Australia. We dont share our boarders with anyone, yet perfectly knowledgeable of the rest of the world. My sisters went to America earlier this year and everyone thought they meant Austria or something and seemed surpised that we actaually have a cultural over here and weren't riding around in Kangaroo's living in the woods.

Do they actually teach Geography in in the U.S.A?
They do actually but it's optional some places. I choose to take sex ed over geo in highschool because lets face it who wants to learn about other countries?

Well, I practice Jujutsu and will be going for my Nidan exam in a couple of months. I also practiced Karate for 8 years I think. And then a bit of unorthodox boxing. Usually when people fist meet me and ask me about my hobbies, I'm afraid to tell them I do all those things because some people thought I'm a very aggressive person after finding out. That's really not fair. The only time I act very manly and über macho is when I eat eggs and bacon. I'm actually quite a softie ^^

People also assume I'm angry or mad about something, to the point of random persons saying cheer up on the street. I AM NOT UPSET, THIS IS HOW MY FACE LOOKS LIKE ! :p

When people assume you HAVE to be with someone, and it's the worst crime in history if you die alone. I realize this stems from most forms of media (curse you, "The Notebook"!), but it's still freakin' annoying. I'm asexual, for God's sake! That means I would PREFER to DIE ALONE. I don't need anyone else to make me happy! I don't want a relationship, or sex, so stop asking who I'm going to date, if I don't like boys or girls!

I even had one guy ask if I was going to marry a sheep. Really, bro? THAT'S the conclusion you jump to when someone says they don't want a relationship with either gender? It's okay to be alone, you don't have to date somebody, and constantly fret over who your "soul mate" is...

...

I'm really beating this point into the ground, aren't I?

Witty Name Here said:
That being a "Socialist" means I want to murder all the rich and install a Communist dictatorship (despite Social Democrats speaking out harshly against dictatorial and authoritarian regimes and, at worst, just wanting to regulate business a bit more.)

That being a "Christian" (or any kind of religious) means I can't possibly be liberal and I want to wage some sort of moral crusade on all the "bad things" in the world.

People who assume that, if I study other religions out of genuine fascination, I either know about some secret Eldritch cult (I don't know, to play into their fear of the "Illuminati" I suppose) or I'm some stuffy Oxford University Scholar or something along those lines.

Basically, I get associated with groups (or groups I'm associated with are treated negatively) that are just not part of my personality.
Indeed; same boat, right here. Someone also said something about being Catholic and liking science, earlier, which also irritates me. Yes, I love science, and yes, I have a faith. Open your mind just A CRACK, so you can fit that new concept into your brain, please...

That they are smarter than me. Or believe themselves to be outwitting me when I'm going along with their game(happens in chess ALOT).

It's strange that you use manly and macho as if they are bad things.

You're upset people assume you're... generous? Well, poor you.

I'm not asexual but I get your point. I have been single for quite a while now and am I unhappy ? Hell no. I'm perfectly content on my own. The whole concept of "soul mate" is quite ridiculous in my eyes.

I once stood waiting for my train home after school, and one of the station employees assumed I was going to jump infront of the train.

Do I win?

I hate when people assume that "feminists" are all man-haters who want special privelages.

No. NONONONONONONONONO. Yes there are some misandrists and morons who use feminism for their stupid stupid goals, but really, assuming we're all like that is like assuming all Germans hate Jews because Nazis. And I doubt the moronists are really in as big of a number as some people believe >_>

I'd be more willing to hear about it were I say, at an event about said charity/organisation, then I'd expect to be approached about it and can happily engage in conversation about it.

A stranger stopping me in the street had better make it entertaining. Being solicited by a nameless random is not entertaining.

You are right though. I'm not generous. Not to strangers. Or myself really. I'd like to think I am very generous with people I care about.

No, we don't really have time for geography. I mean, between polishing our assault rifles and each one of us personally interfering in oil-rich countries' politics, we really don't have much time for anything else. Oh, except maybe taking a stroll on the prone bodies of poor immigrants down to the local McDonalds to buy a few bigmacs.

On topic:
I hate broad assumptions and generalizations directed at entire continental populations. They make my blood just seethe.

Well, you sound like you got a good laugh about it. Sort of a win. Shoulda seen if you could swindle some free snacks from the station cafe or something.

People assume I don't like the look of the new DMC because Dante has black hair now, instead of just asking why I don't like it

People assume that i'm a stoner and a druggie.

Happy to say I am and have always been clean. That's the one that annoys the shit outta me.

I didn't think of that. Damn.
But yeah, it makes an interesting story.
The conversation went like this:
Employee: Hey...are you alright?
Me: Yeah, why?
Employee: Oh, just checking
Me:...
Employee: You aren't planning to jump, are you?
Me: What?! No.
Employee: Ok, just have to check these things...

It's more interesting to tell friends or people who've known me for a little while, because the cause of it is that I'm one of those strange people that have no emotional state without stimuli, so my usual face is very neutral, and for some reason, people (read: everyone, unless rationally explained to) assume that means I'm sad or depressed, as if I'm supposed to be smiling as I do nothing. Sometimes people will tell me to smile, but I refuse since if I'm always smiling that destroys the meaning of it. What would be good or special about smiling then? And when would people know if I'm really happy?

I enjoy equestrian activities and I reguarlly get two responces when I mention this. Those familiar with the internet assume I must be some sort of ultra brony or they assume I'm gay. I'm neither and although I have nothing against gays/bronies I don't want to be apart of either groups since people then think I must be camp or a pedaphile for watching a kid's show.

People who make casual jokes at my expense on stuff I care about. Yeah, make fun of my dead hamster we'll see who's laughing when I break your legs and laugh at your dead mum... People should get to know what is/isn't acceptable to be made fun of; depending on the person.

How about the Spanish speaking countries, that always assume I am one of them even though I don't even speak Spanish and there are a lot more countries besides theirs? It's just a username, damn it.

Or how about Brazilian people assuming I'm Brazilian? Always with the "X, are you BR?"

Anyway, the US is pretty big on the internet which makes them quite self-centered. If you're in an English speaking website and you're writing correct English without telltale signs of British English, it's fair to assume you're from a country in North America.

People assume Canadians are polite, nice and civil. We are not.

It also bugs me that America assumes the world is always on its side when we are really just against the other guys most of the time. We would probably not side with you if China attacked. We would stay out of that shit I think.
