Whether or not it has been done before, what are some things that in your opinion should not be done in games?
These can range from stories, to gameplay elements, characters, weapons, etc...

This thread inspired by the most annoying buy concept ever, which exists in a couple of free to play downloadable games.
Purchasing ingame items (for ingame cash) that last a set amount of time.
What a shitty concept! You pay your hard-earned ingame dollars for something that's going to eventually disappear! The more you pay, the longer you can keep the item (and of course buying in bulk is always cheaper in the long-shot) but it's still a very annoying concept. It's too bad that I'm attatched to the certain game with this annoying mechanic, otherwise I would have forgotton about it by now...
The worst part is, when I'm low on money, I have to buy said upgrades for one day (24 hours), play all afternoon, and then the next day it would disappear the exact moment I got home from school, since that was when I bought it the previous day.
How frustrating is that?
So yer, where are your opinions?

Break up every little bit of the game.

Lost Plantet 2; split up into episodes, chapters & missions.

Now that seems reasonable, however between each episode there is a little review of your overall performance. Between each chapter there is a review of the just completed chapter. Between each mission there is a review of said mission. This could work, if the missions actually had some length to them. Since each mission is essentially a stand alone task the game is broken up far to much .. recalling one that took me 3mins 11secs(ish) and most others take 8 - 12mins. So far thats all that's really bugging me.

having stealth in games, yet not using them.

I am thinking of inFamous where i sneak up to a baddie on a building and take him out (melee, no noise) and yet baddies 3 buildings away "notice" me and are like SNIPER VISION!

That sounds like battlefield heroes weapon system you mentioned OP.

Anyway I dislike games with bad pacing. It's the one crime a lot of games commit and probably the worst

Rape. Of the child variety.

Oh, and micro payments. Despise them. Let be just buy the damn game for £20-30 and I'll be happy :/

Do NOT kill the buddy character off for no other reason then to create easy drama. Nothing is worse than creating an intresting side kick or love intrest only to kill them off later in the game or in the sequel.

the only thing worse is killing off a main character.

Off the top of my head, Army of Two the 40th day is quilty of both of these sins but it's not the only one.

1) Games where someone talks to you about doing a quest and you have no option to refuse.
Fallout 3 does this alot.

2) Also QTEs are a pain.
"I'm just trying to enjoy a cut scene, Resident Evil 5, stop making me press random buttons!"

3) When games put physics objects in the path where player characters will walk. Then have NPCs whine about it.
Fallout 3 also does this alot.
"STFU Rivet City Security! If you didn't want me to hit your precious traffic cones, why did you put six in this narrow hallway?!"

4) Retarded voice acting and stupid dialogue. Like in Just Cause 2.
"My name is Bolo Santosi. I am the leader of the... Hey! What are you laughing at? Stop it!" [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5o0XOFrFOVI]

5) Auto-leveling enemies. This is most obvious in Bethesda's Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
"Hey! Lets make the enemies level up with you and stay just as strong as you."
"So leveling up won't make you any stronger, because your enemies are always the same level as you?"
"Yeah! It's to keep the game accessable to people who think it's smart to run into an inter-dimensional portal filled with demons, at level one."

6) Creating a DLC that has a complete disregard toward the elements established by the original game.
Fallout 3's Operation Anchorage [http://www.shamusyoung.com/twentysidedtale/?p=8206] is an astounding example of this. It turns a post-apocaliptic RPG into a clunky FPS.

Modern Warfare 2 does that like... five different times. I stopped caring after the first time.

QTEs, silent protagonists, vehicle sections that are harder than driving an actual vehicle, love interests for those silent protagonists (once again, I'll stop ragging on Alyx Vance when she's dead, then I'll celebrate), inverted controls (the flight sequences in God of War 3 being a perfect example). That's all I can think of at the moment.

EDIT: Oh, and random upgrade systems. There is no reason for there to be an upgrade system in Splinter Cell: Conviction. Modern Warfare did a good upgrade system for guns, nobody else has.

Use the PS3's Six-Axxis. It was a gimmick, it failed. Let it die.

1) Forced failure is evil. Taking all my stuff away and forcing me to play in a different way is ok if it's a quick interlude, but that's all it should be. Similarly, if a character leaves my party in an RPG, I want my gear back before he/she buggers off in a huff.

2) Don't refuse to let me remap the keys. I play on the pc, and have a decent mouse. You should be letting me use those side mouse buttons. I'm looking at you, Just Cause 2. Heroes Over Europe also might have been good, I don't know. Because it won't let me change the way the sticks work, and I keep ploughing into the ground.

3) Don't respawn enemies. EVER. It is 2010. We have had some truly imaginitive games pushing the boundaries of what is accepted as a game, and we're still pulling this shit. It broke Metal gear Solid 2 when you went out of a room to pick up "thing X" and came back in to find the room was full of terrorists again. If there are that many bloody terrorists, why not invade properly rather than taking over a sodding oil rig? If it fucked that game, it'll do the same to a new one.

4) Headshots should kill people. It should not have no noticeable effect beyond their head whipping back a little while they run towards me without breaking stride. That will get your game posted back to you in little bits.

5) FINISH THE GAME. I think we all know a few companies that need to learn this one...

Forced. Stealth. Sections. It's a game ruiner in almost every instance I've seen it. Unless it's a game completely dedicated to stealth, I don't want to be sneaking around.

Vocalizing every jump in a game that has platfoming, I'm look at you Wild Arms 4.

Not being able to use healing spells outside of a battle, can also be frustrating.

Try to be a movie/TV show. I'm looking at you Heavy Rain. Be a game. Interactive movies failed for a reason.

The illusion of choice in games is something that gets to me, particularily refering to mass effect 2 here, now I loved the story in both mass effect games but there was no option, ever, to tell the illusive man to shove it. Just to agree happily, or agree reluctantly, ugh

Oh and those wonderful "take away all your powers/weapons/whatever" levels, happened in prototype, happened in alan wake, happened kinda in HL2 tho you kept the gravity gun... and I'm sure I could think of some more but seriously, I hate that with a passion!

Games should not have police that are alerted by any minor thing you do. I accidentally knocked over a mailbox and suddenly I'm on the CIA's most wanted list.

I hate it when something happens which results in you losing all your weapons and abilities. Or starting the game as a fully upgraded character, and then going back in time or losing everything which ends up making you as powerful as my gran.
