Things that good movies could remove in order to become great movies?

Everything in the world can stand for a little improvement, even the things we hold up as perfect, an example being movies. Sometimes we think that movies would be even better if they added something to it like I dunno... a full nude scene with Scarlett Johansson?... yeah go with that. the idea that if this was added the movie would be that little extra bit better, you know that little tasty detail on a cake.
However what about things in movies that you consider could have been removed to make the movie better? Like okay I'll use 2005's the Island as a refereance. While the overall theme and setting were all truly great and imaginative I felt that the one thing that ruined it where the tacked on car chases and action sequences. They didn't fit in and call me crazy but car chases don't exactly trigger my amazement or awe and wonder. If they had scratched these parts and instead made it a story about understanding human nature and the mystery of one's identity then it would have been better. It would have been the equivilant of removing a lump of mouldy fruit from the top of an otherwise delcious apple crumble.

So what about you what part or parts of movies that you considered good do you think could have been removed to make it better?

I remember thinking the same about The Island... I generally think that films like that shouldn't really have action scenes where they really, really don't need them.

Absolutely ANY movie with a sex scene added for no other reason then to increase sales. Yes, fine, a tasteful scene now and again is fine, but,

"Whew, I just killed 30 armed men with my toes. Wanna sleep with me?"

"Are you the main character?"

"You know it."

"Let's roll."

is unacceptable. It makes me mad, and bumps the rating up for completely avoidable reasons. Even better is when the girl isn't shown for the rest of the film.

I got one actually, the token black character.
This is a trend that has to stop.

Oaky first of all the writers have no idea how to write black characters, so their behaviour is essentially a stupid stereotype.

But the main reason is that most of the time movies add a black character to the story so as not to be accused of being racist when casting....
So to try to announce how 'not racist' they are they decide to add an out of place, obnoxious and annoying ethnic character who stands out from the rest of the characters and usually has little to no relevance to the actual PLOT. Who was added just because (s)he is black.
Isn't that just as racist when you think about it? Because they only do that to draw attention to the fact that the person's skin is a different colour to the others. You shouldn't need to add an ethnic character to a cast just for the sake of having one.

Hmmm...

...remember "the 'burbs"?

It is a comedy with Tom Hanks where he and others live in a peaceful suburbia. Then a new family is moving in, foreigners of some kind with very strange behaviour. And as one of the other neighbours strangely disappeares, Tom Hanks' Character and his militaristic neighbor suspect that new family and try to "expose the truth".

In the end, the main characters more or less accidentially blow up the new familys home, the missing neighbor appears again, being away due to a medical condition, and Tom Hanks is going to be sued for what he done, all while the militaristic guy is still prejudiced.

...That's pretty much how it should end to be good, but of course it turns out that the main characters were right all along and the new guys try to kill them, fail, get arrested, and everything is normal again.

*SIGH*

P.S.: Unfortunately, while there is an alternative ending, it is only slightly better (the new guys still try to kill the main characters, but this time because they've blown up thier home and were generally prejudiced against them).

EDIT: Also, i know no person who did not hate that forced and kind of ugly sex scene in Matrix Reloaded...

I Am Legend.

The film was amazing, at least for the first two thirds. And then the kid shows up, and everything turns to balls, and the original message of the novel is completely turned about and shat upon.

I don't think I've ever been so disappointed.

For me, the whole thing is just a disappointment.

What the hell was wrong with just adapting the original novel 1:1?
At least for me, due to the short length and straightforward storytelling, it translated pretty well into a "mind movie" in my imagination.

With the Main Character just being a normal guy, and not a super military soldier/scientist?
With the "Vampires" being more intelligent and organized?
Without Scenes of Will Smith showing his "loneliness" by letting him talk to strategically placed mannequins?
And of course, with the real ending that explains the whole "I am Legend" thing? (The alternate Ending to the Movie at least trys that, but still misses kinda the point)

The end of Death Race.
Ok the movie wasnt great, but it was pretty much a violent version of Mario Kart and who doesnt find that mildly ammusing. But the whole film goes thru with car chases, explosions and a petrol-tanker with flametrowers and a Tank cannon. Then the end turns into a love fest about this guys daughter or some shit.

Cut the last 10mins off this and finish it when the prison Warden blows up. Would make it way better.

I see your point with the vampires, but I thought the mannequins really worked, it turned the first part of the film into an analysis of a man and his deterioration through isolation. But I'm never going back to it, it hurt me too badly.

Calling these movies "good" is a little bit of a stretch ("enjoyable" is probably a better term), but Equilibrium and The Island both would have been improved by removing the happy ending. Neither dystopia was particularly insightful or thought-provoking, but the shallow virtues that they did have were completely undermined when those societies were so weak that it only takes a 90 minute movie to undo them.

Transformers could have done without a car ad or 2....thousand. Also the wigger one's wiggerness.
Not a good movie, but Transporter 3 could have done without that Ukranian girl. Was a fun movie to watch for the hell of it with my guy friends, but that girl annoyed the crap out of me.

If Idi I Smotri would've cut down the swamp crossing scene, it would've been perfect. As it stands it's still the best movie ever made though.
