Who else is old enough to remember The Little Prince? Also there was this one about a boy and his big white dog I remember from when I was a little kid (I didn't know what anime was at the time, but I do now), but I can't remember what it was called.

That my friend is Urotsokidouji, better known in the west as Legend of the Overfiend. It's actually one of the better and more interesting animes from the 80's/90's if you can manage to look past all the tentacle rape and whatnot and it was also influentail in introducing anime as a whole to the western world.
Never before had the words "this cartoon isn't for kids" been uttered so many times.

I usually watch mid-common anime like Bleach, Soul Eater, Naruto, Trigun, Full Metal Alchemist and Metalocalypse.
Metalocalypse isn't an anime, and I contest the mid-common classification for Bleach, and outright reject it for Naruto.
Bah. Picky, aren't we?
I'll admit mild pickyness with the Naruto and Bleach parts, but I have no idea how you considered Metalocalypse an anime. Avatar The Last Airbender I can understand, but Metalocalypse doesn't resemble anime beyond being animated.

Disclaimer: If anyone somehow thought this, no, I'm not criticizing Metalocalypse for not being an anime.
This all depends on your definition of Anime, which most would say no. That's including me :p. Also I too reject Naruto I for one found it *braces for upcoming hate* awful.
You are not going to get any flame whatsoever for hating Naruto, it's actually the cool thing to do among anime fans and haters. Dislike of that anime is by no means controversial.
Yeah but there's always THAT guy.
And I am that guy so I gotta know....what's with the Naruto hate?

Also please try to not judge me too harshly for my liking of Naruto...

The thing is I was a kid when I saw it, I was about 10 or so.

I have only ever encountered one other person who knows of The Vision of Escaflowne.
Maybe not obscure though. I wouldn't really know.

I can't make promises about him, but I'm confused by the sheer hate myself. I'm not a fan, but I read some of the manga and thought it was OK. My guess is that it's because it's popular, though you gotta admit the anime had a lot of filler (like 85 straight episodes).

Mnemosyne. Only 6 episodes, but around 45 minutes each. About a pair of immortal women, who would as a sort of jack-of-all-trades detectives, and each episode usually starts a decade or more after the last.

Its strange, but its also really good, and I would highly recomend it to anyone and everyone.

Ah the annoyance of the fillers I can understand, but by the time I became a fan all the filler was over and done with so I could just skip those 85 or so episodes and get straight to the meat of the story so the amount of Naruto hate I see around the internet still tends to baffle me a smidgen.

Most of my main likes for Anime come from the distant past and have dubs that make 4 Kids look like there masters, things like:

Gaiking
Scavengers
Star Blazers (Best opening EVER!!!)
Kimba the White Lion (though I think that has a strong fallowing)
Night on the Galactic Railroad

For more resent stuff there's a few

Spring and Chaos
Yu yu Hakusho
Reign the Conqueror (best seen uncut)

To be honest, I just like animation overall and rarely care if it's any kind of animation, just needs to hit the right button with me.

There seems to be some disagreement stemming from differing definitions of "obscure." One describes the anime as "unknown," and the other as "unfathomable."

Towards the latter: Kurozuka keeps you off-balance, and I can see why Ergo Proxy would be mentioned, but I think my most-incomprehensible award has to go to the end of Evangelion.

I'd just be guessing if I tried to select some unknown-but-not-crap shows, though.

the glassfleet it was okay not great.
same with the lost universe

edit: Gigantor seems to be a lost classic seeing as no one i know has ever heard of it and it is a close to the genesis of anime as you can get on youtube seeing as how it was made in the 1940s/50s.

It's called Lain. Made and set in the '90s, it was Haruhi Suzumiya before Haruhi Suzumiya (young girl discovers she's god, yadda yadda).
Lain wasn't God it explains Lain as several things (an omnipresent being part of the wired, or a program used by masami eiri) but never God actually at the end of the anime Lain explains the existence of God to Masami Eiri and then fades out of existence by erasing the memory of her from everyone and becoming nothing to the people in the real world...
I'm sorry, I couldn't follow it that well. I'm not being sarcastic, it was just that odd.

There's more to anime than just Naruto and Death Note. Some shows fly under the collective radars of everyone in the anime-watching community. What's the most obscure show you've ever watched, and did you enjoy it?

I saw an anime series my step-mother bought for me called Betterman (I think it's obscure: I don't talk to my friends often about anime, so I could be talking about the most popular show evar for all I know). She and I rather enjoyed the first episode, so we went ahead and got the entire 26-episode series. To be completely brief, the show essentially combines Japanese horror with mech-suits. Yeah, that's kind of an odd combo, and it doesn't always mesh too well. In addition, there's also this being going around called Betterman who eats what looks like lotus-flowers to kill the people threatening our intrepid heroes. A lot of the story makes little sense, especially the last episode concerning the fate of an unborn child (seriously, show. WTF?). I may have my details all mucked up, since it's been a good 2 years since I watched this show.

So, if you like mechs and horror, you might want to check this series out.
