I think by Screamer music he means stuff such as Asking Alexandria, Bring me the Horizon and Suicide Silence etc, which is extremly overated almost everyone i know how say they like metal say they like bands like slipknot and BMTH which are shit and overated instead of delving deep in to the genre, what am i complaining though i can just sit back and listen to bands such as Cynic, Obscura, Death, Alghazanth and Devin Townsend while they eventually move onto the next musical Fad.

I'll add to Lady Gaga. What the hell is her problem? I despise the fact a woman/man/it is a role model for girls these days. My eldest is getting to the age where she might be easily influenced by so called role models.

Popularity is not the right yard stick to be using to judge greatness, because is most cases what is popular is mass produced pigshit

in many ways, the music industry can be compared with the food industry
Lol. I don't mean it like that. I just ment that I would've heard of them by now.

Further to this, sorry for quoting u so often, but your views interest me, look at the charts, even the publicly voted charts of each year, and try and remember the last time u heard any songs in the top 10. I am using the Triple J Hottest 100 as a guide, u can use billboard or whatever.

To be honest, i had trouble finding one that really fit my point but here is 1998

The Offspring ? "Pretty Fly (for a White Guy)"
Ben Lee ? "Cigarettes Will Kill You"
Custard ? "Girls Like That (Don't Go for Guys Like Us)"
Hole ? "Celebrity Skin"
KoЯn ? "Got the Life"
Regurgitator ? "! (Song Formerly Known As)"
Jebediah ? "Harpoon"
Powderfinger ? "The Day You Come"
You Am I ? "Heavy Heart"
The Living End ? "Save The Day"

i honestly have not heard any of those songs played on the radio since about 1999

they were popular once, then never again. I dont believe that any of these songs would find themselves in any list of the greatest songs of the 90's. Try and remember the number 1 song last year...i have no idea, but i am sure you can think of your favorite song of last year, and chances are it will either be the same as, or at least the same band as heaps of other people
No problem, although I have to apologise cause I'm not exactly sure what your asking. I don't really have a favourite song, some I listen to more than most sure, but not one specific. Same with genre's, don't give a shit about genre's, just strong melody's.

I have no idea what number one songs are for any year, I don't follow charts anymore (I did when I was very young). I think Bad Romance was number uno for awhile, I heard it everywhere as well as that one Justin Beiber song. Thought Bad Romance is alright but still nothing special at all.

I think your trying to point out that my opinion is no different from other popular opinions. I will admit, Lady Gaga is probably the best I've heard out of the pop scene in the last couple of years.

Crappy pop singers can't really be considered "overrated", since everyone outside of their target audience thinks that they're terrible. I interpret "overrated" as bands that are loved by critics and considered artistically meritorious, but still suck. For this reason, I believe that Radiohead is the single most overrated band in human history.

Yep, agree with that. As far as 'classical' music is concerned, he is definitely overrated. I reckon him to be a clone of Haydn. He's a prodigy that never grew up...

I reckon every artist that makes it into the top ten of the UK charts is overrated. But then again, I've inured myself to modern music and just don't listen to the radio (except Radio 4 = no music, or virtually no music).

I invite anyone to comment on the following (bands I like, incidentally):

Full Blown Rose
Hello Madness
Poets of the Fall
Rookiez is Punk'D
Skillet
The Fray

Phillip Glass, I fucking hate minimalists. They write songs that literally consist of just one meter repeated. They don't even try to disguise their repetitiveness by putting lyrics on top like most modern pop music.

Fuck, even baroque-era operas change their lines after four or five repetitions. Minimalists are almost as lazy as the most terrible modern artists who consider a blank canvas to be art. Sure, some minimalists try to get fancy with their phases and evolving scores, but they aren't fooling anyone.

I also don't get people who enjoy minimalist music. They're not the same sort of people who go to a concert to see a chamber orchestra (i.e. cheapskates and/or idiots.) They're the sort of people who are too damn lazy or dull-minded to appreciate music with even the slightest degree of complexity.

Edit: Thank fuck Igor Stravinsky came around about the same time and showed us how it's done:
No one digs textural variety anymore.
Always dig someone willing to share Igor Stravinsky with the rest of the class. Thanks for sharing.

I actually wouldn't claim any of the trashy pop stuff is overrated, a very small minority seem to like it and nobody else. It's the big ones, generally well respected bands that are massively over rated (it seems particularly true of American bands/singers). Being overrated is different from being crap, as such the most overrated bands/singers are the best ones. That said, given how unimaginably horrid rhianna sounds, the fact that her fan count isn't in the negatives suggests she is grossly overrated (and, as anyone with any sense has ascertained, I consider her music to torture in audio form).

Metallica, Guns n Roses, The eagles, Hendrix, elvis, etc.

That's not tot say that there aren't non american bands that aren't insanely overated: the beatles, zeppelin, queen, AC/DC and so on also get way more attention than they should.

That's not to say that they are bad. Quite a few of the listed bands are my favorites, but that doesn't change the fact that everyone seems to love them, and, from an unbaised perspective, they are not as good as their popularity implies.

To throw out something off topic, I feel the cat empire is massively under appreciated.

All of them.

Every last one.

I can't think of a single song from the last ten years that doesn't reach beyond "meh, it's okay".

A friend told me that during Mozart's time, he was considered the Justin Bieber of composers (as in being a shitty musician.) Now, he's one of the greatest composers of his time. Just saying.
Believe it or not, most likely in 50 years, the pop artists today will be considered "classics."
But in my own opinion, I think every disney-esqe pop star is overrated.

I feel I have to define the word "overrated" as someone who is made out to be the great, thought of as great, but whose performance cannot match that image. It would have to be someone with a large fan base who could pull big crowds, but whose songs are somewhat lacking.

I'm tempted to go with the horribles, but Justin Bieber is only really big with young girls (and young boys who desperately want something in common with said girls), so I wouldn't call him highly rated. Kedollarsignha has many hits and sell well, but I don't really know anyone who thinks she's good...she's more a phenomenon than a musician. Black Eyed Peas are kinda hit and miss in that they make insanely good stuff or insanely bad stuff, but that seems general consensus. A year ago I'd go with Eminem, but he's back to his old ways again and I'm loving it.

I'd have to go with Rihanna. Loads and loads of OK songs, but not nearly as good as her reputation.

IMO:

Rap is overrated
Thats why i hear constant bashing of rap/hip-hop?

Screamer (metal music with vocals that have no pitch) is very overrated (amongst the metal community particularly)
The fact that you call it "screamer" shows that you have no clue about extreme metal music. Its definetly not overrated either, i mean almost everyone bitches about them because they just too closeminded to gtfo their own comfort zone.

You just dont like them so you say their overrated.
Excuse me but I beg to differ. Despite the constant bashing of rap/hip-hop it's still a massively popular genre here in the States.

AND

It's true I don't really listen to a lot of so-called "extreme" metal music, that is, out of my own free will. I've heard a ton of metal that uses non-pitch screaming or pigsquealing what have you, and I can't stand it at all. It's not that I'm closed minded or too happy in my comfort zone, I listen to shoegaze, and sludge metal, which are VERY out of the comfort zone for a large number of people.

Apparently you can't respect my own tastes in music and must treat it like I have some fucking deficiency of mind. I'll respect your stupid version of metal when you let me like what I like!

Almost anything pop is overrated... Justin Bieber is the definite and obvious answer but anything using auto-tune probably fits the bill just right. I say 'probably' cause there might be some case of auto-tune where it's more then ear raping. Emo also makes my ears bleed to (my chemical romance, tokio hotel, etc) I don't mean to be trolling on emo-fans... But well... IMO it just sucks ass...
