Ohh don't be silly. 'Too many new members'? Oh I'm sorry, is this site not open to everyone?

This is inevitable. As the site grows in popularity we are going to gain new members. You should be happy we'll be getting more interesting, decent people on this site, and happier still that the lovely people who keep this site running for us can see their work flourish ever further. This isn't your site, or mine. This is a site for everyone who shares our passion, or even merely interest in, games. Don't be so juvenile.

I'd love to see more categories, that would keep it a bit clearer already. Only 'Gaming Discussion' on a gamer forum? Put it in genres and I could skip 90% of them and just read what I care for.

I think I made a thread about that once, uhm, which disappeared within minutes... :p
It's why I don't often use these forums, too fast for me to keep track of. =/

all you have to do is look back a few pages for the better ones?
It's not all about having your topics in the "Latest topics" and "Hot topics sections"
the longest I've had a topic there was about 2 hours!

You mean like these 2 people? Yeah I concur.

I wasn't picking apart the OP's post, I was simply trying to explain why some threads get more attention than others, but-

EDIT: Edited because my comment was hurtful, but horrifically true.

Aye some threads get no attention and other get loads, its up to the people reading though whether they want to participate in the discussion or not.

Its better than too few threads, I love a forum that constantly has people chatting.
And who cares if a thread doesn't get as many hits, its not a competition.

I think there are too many repeat threads. It would be nice to have a better way to archive threads into more specific categories. It probably woudln't work, but oh well.

Threads are divided in to these groups to me:

Have you ever...?
Is X right or wrong?
Favorite/Least Favorite X
Something Crazy Happened to me

The threads that get all the views is the second one, if its about sex, or homosexuality because everybody wants their opinion to be heard. After it would be the 4th one, where the OP's story is the discussion, about what he should do and if he did the right thing. First one usually gets 4 pages on average, if its something creative like "have you ever looked at the castle in Mario Kart 64?".

Of course my threads always get a bazillion pages until it gets deleted because it degraded into "I hate that x" which is usually something bad or a story of how my life sucks :D

It depends; sometimes there aren't enough new threads. Perhaps you've just got some bad luck on your previous threads. You should take better notice of the times when people are on and when threads are created to find a perfect time to create a new one so that it sticks out.
"a prefect time"? I thought I joined a forum, not some sort of flowchart sorority...

Also, I feel your pain. I, once too, in a deep dark history, had a pretty amazing thread(can't find it anymore, was about games you played over and over). I had to bump it 3 times before it took off, because people rather posted what they had for breakfast...

A quick edit, I noticed Furburt's post a little late:

There's a simple enough solution, is that instead of relying on the 'latest posts' bar, just search the forums manually. Believe me, you will find something worth commenting on. Comment on that, and usually, it'll get bumped and other people will comment on it too. The latest posts thing has always gone very fast.
I always use the latest post bar whilst exploring the rest of the site. Usually read up on mu Stolen Pixels, or something else that requires a lot of refreshing.
You don't have to make a flowchart of it all, you just have to have eyes. After you've come to frequent this site long enough, you're bound to notice patterns or lulls in when threads are or are not created. Think of the thread you want to make and hold off on making it till you notice one of these lulls or it comes to a time when a lot of people are on but not too many threads are being made. Not too hard to do, neh?

And Furburt's advice is key. I often check the actual Forum tag and see what threads are new in Games and Off Topic and so I often see the new threads before they appear on the Latest Post bar. You get more topics available to you and this can help you to tell when there is or isn't a good time to post your fabulous new thread as well.

I know the feeling, theres nothing more galling (is that a word? It is now!) then when a thread you've spent 45 minutes typing up bombs under a load of "whats your favourite sandwhich filling" threads.

Or when the crowd picks apart your OP. Thats annoying too.
And in this case, my OP has been picked down to the very pixels. But hey, even if it's just mostly hate...

I'm still enjoying the attention my thread is getting.

oh, so very, very true.
and im sorry, but by posting links to things you have done, that classifies you as a spammer.
so Im conflicted, on the one hand youve brought up a decent thread(the irony in it is hilarious) but on the other hand youre a spammer.
do I hate you?
If you're going with the popular opinion, then yes...yes you do.

However, I wouldn't consider myself a spammer by providing links to some of my threads, unless you think my OP is taking up too much space, and leaving no room for others to post. The links I posted were just a very small part of the discussion I was trying to spark.

Some threads will get alot more attention than others simply because of the title. Have you seen the "Oh No! You're going to be Executed! What is your Last Request? [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.182837-Oh-No-Youre-Going-to-be-Executed-What-is-your-Last-Request]" thread? I made that 2 days ago and it is still going moderately strong.

1:
I think that one of the only reasons threads either get applauded or ignored is because of three things: the Title of the Thread, the Content of the Thread, and the Subjct Matter of the Thread. If the thread has an interesting, amusing, or generally just attention grabbing title then more people will click on it to see what it's about.

2:
If it well thought out, grammatically correct and everything is spelled correctly, then more people will read through the post. This means that people will understand what you are talking about.

3:
If the Thread concerns an interesting thing, something that affects everyone or a majority of people, then people will post!

4:
???

5:
PROFIT!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It really is quite simple, when you think about it.
I try to be straight forward with the content of threads in the title. People try to attract attention to their threads with extremely vague titles, such as: So whats the deal with...

(clicks thread) ...pizza toppings?
