Ok, first of all, anyone mentioning Nu Metal in here needs to get a clue. That's not metal; that's just crap thinly veiled as metal with all of the inherent stereotypes and none of the talent.

Anyway, my personal top 5 are:
1. Ayreon
2. Falconer
3. Blind Guardian
4. Queensryche
5. Iron Maiden

In Flames
Children of Bodom
Killswitch Engage
Metallica
Hammerfall

The problem with this thread is that there are different types of metal: there's a large variation between the most growly and hardcore and the most melodic. For example, the difference between songs like this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hZXxrzsQOA] (warning: explicit) and something more famous [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CEDKcEPDQO4].

Edit: also thought I might share my pain; it's off-topic, but this is the off-topic forum. I was at Reading Festival last year and I didn't see Metallica when they headlined. I'm so gutted. I also missed The Unholy Alliance (In Flames, Lamb of God, Slayer and Children of Bodom at the time) when it was on my birthday a few years back. I am so fucking pissed off that I missed them.

In no order...
Black Sabbath
Iron Maiden
Slayer
Megadeth
God I can't bear to leave out Judas Priest, Wintersun, Amon Amarth, Alestorm, (early) Metallica, Arsis, Enfsiferum, Dethklok, Overkill, Dio, Testament, Helloween, Finntroll, Ozzy, or Pantera.

I hate list threads because I listen to too much metal... averaging 7-8 albums a day in the summer. I can't choose between Alestorm and Overkill. It's too hard.

Also, Im pretty sure nu metal origanated as a crossover of hip hop and metal. So if you can call punk rock rock, you can call nu metal metal. Although all nu metal has contributed to the genre is simplification and "underground popularity". I swear the some people at my school thought that Disturbed and Avenged Sevenfold were underground, and that they were really really big metalheads for listening to them.

As for metalcore http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjg8mmVUuxw. That is all.

Also, is grunge a derivative form of metal??? It does fit fairly well with some light doom...

I enjoy procrastinating on these forums.

Also SOAD (/Scars or Serj) is awesome, but not metal IMO.

Metallica
Iron Maiden
Disturbed
Lamb of God
Nine Inch Nails

Pretty much just the first 5 metal bands that came to mind so the list isn't 100% accurate but I'd never be able to decide otherwise.

Early Disturbed (Sickness & Belive)

Children of Bodom
Cradle of Filth

Several others of which I can't think of.
