Strapping Young Lad
Carcass
Opeth
Tool (I'm counting 'em)
Children of Bodom

But also Otep, Fear Factory, Machine Head, Pantera, Maiden, NIN, My Ruin, gah - I can't do this!
Oooh, ooh, and Finntroll!

eeh, in no particular order then, pretty difficult to narrow it down to 5 but:

-Metallica (Black Album and Backwards anyway)
-Iron Maiden
-Black Sabbath
-Motorhead
-Slayer (Brutal stuff)

Just out of interest why isn't bullet for my valentine metal? I mean it's got the right tempo, style, riffs/arrangement, and there's mosh pits at their gigs, pretty decent pits too.

Cuz they're not edgy and 'trendy' enough. Kerrang has turned them into 'my first metal band' unfortunately. It's sad really. Their first EP was great!

Yeah gonna have to agree with you there I guess, I started listening to them before them days, when they were a little more underground, felt their new album was a bit sell out when compared to The Poison.

I really hate Kerrang, it's a complete media whore.

If you cover 'bands' like The Automatic, you are no longer a metal mag. It's gone the way of the Download headline slots of recent years *shakes head sadly*

3. Ministry
4. Devil Driver
5. Demon hunter

Lamb of God is truely the greatest metal band ever.

1. Slipknot (some songs have a depressing tone to them like Snuff)
2. NIN (though mostly industry)
3. Iron Maiden (Death for those who think that Iron Maiden sucks)
4. Motley Crue (Step aside, Dr. Feelgood is in the house!)
5. Poison (Every Rose has Its Thorn is one of the best power ballads in the history of power ballads)

Motorhead
Judas Preist
Kataklysm
Cannibal Corpse
Amon Amarth

I don't think these are any better than any others. I just listen to these probably the most.

Oh christ tell me about it, I've seen My Chemical Romance and Panic at the disco on the fronts of Kerrang on more than a few occasions, "Because life is loud" my arse... and yeah, download headers are terrible these days.

In no particular order:
- Strapping Young Lad
- Pain of Salvation
- Opeth
- Symphony X

Finally, SYL seems to get the attention it deserves. In other Metal threads I've seen so far they were not mentioned enough!

I know, nobody ever mentions them! Heavy Devy Townsend is awesome, like Bill Bailey's evil twin.

Why are half the bands listed in this thread Nu Metal?
That's not metal. :)
Well, as long as we're being lenient, I'll include a couple of -core bands.

Once again, in no order:
Nasum
Marc A. Pullen
August Burns Red
Crimson Moonlight
Miseration
Another Sauerbraten player i presume?
Yep. What's your nick on it? Mine's the same as it is here, LoopyDood.
