A game is never overrated, Frodo Baggins. Nor is it underrated. It is rated precisely how you want it to be.

Well I am a PC gamer so the idea of "generations" seems silly to me.

Bioshock Infinite (and all of the Bioshock games, really. System Shock 2 did everything Bioshock did but better, and Bioshock Infinite had no reason to be a shooter)

Maybe the Far Cry games?

Honestly apart from Bioshock Infinite nothing really seemed to be "overrated", though we measure the success of video games differently than other media. We're willing to give bland shooters and sandbox games high scores just because the graphics are great and the gameplay is tight, because for the most part that's what we're conditioned to appreciate.

Doom 4. Boring, samey shooting. Controls like a rhino on rollerblades. Character depth non existent. Too much red, boring red. Nobody likes mars anyway. Not even hell. Just because it's red, it doesn't mean it's automatically hell's shagpag!
While I'm keen to play Doom when I get the chances (and I'll likely enjoy it tons), I get the impression that Doom 3 and Doom 4 both misunderstood what people liked about Doom/Doom II so much.

Those two games were colourful, they contrasted the darkness with bright areas. The techbase designs were based more on Alien and Star Wars than the Alien sequels and the gothic-industrial style of stuff like Event Horizon. Sure they still had spooky tech-labyrinths but they weren't excessively dark and grim.

You know what game has the level design aesthetics a modern Doom needs? The new Unreal Tournament.

Replay the first 9 maps of Doom, what do you notice? Outdoor areas are bright and they are numerous. They contrast with the dark corridors and claustrophobia of inside areas. Doom 4 seems to have taken too make level design cues from Doom 3, and I have seen very few outdoor environments that break up the monotony. Does SnapMap even ALLOW outdoor environments?

Honestly I wish the developers of Doom 4 researched what kind of maps the community has been making 20 years on, instead of using Doom 3's interpretation of Doom's Romero maps and taking inspiration from obnoxious gameplay mods like Brutal Doom.

Hello everyone,

So My friends, In this thread we talk about 5 most overrated games of this gen. what do you think top 5 are? Overrated not always mean game is bad. it means overpraised by critics.

5. Call of Duty advanced warfare

Was deemed as first next gen COD with next gen graphics but in the end its same as before. yet it recieve high reviews.

4. The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt

Its not really a bad game but NOWHERE NEAR AS GOOD AS Critics praise it like giving it 10/10. the game has MAJOR flaws. Combat absolutely suck, so is controlling. story is very boring. yes its worth playing game but not even close to bieng 10/10. CDPR really suck at making core gameplay elements.

3. Wolfenstien the new order

Game is not only disgrace to series (especially RTCW) but also disgrace to old school FPS. the game was praise like "oh oweeee old schooolz" Old school shooter made by developer of Darkness, riddick (I love this game but still), and resistance??! Old school shooter with iron sight, forced stealth, scripted on rail sequence and too many cinematic cutscenes?? Old school shooter that is very slow paced with sprint system where you cant shoot? thats not old school. Abysmal game.

2. Metal Gear Solid 5 Phantom Pain

This is unfinished game that even has final part cut but recieve 10/10? seriously?? one of the most boring, repetetive game i have ever played. almost every mission feel same. kill soldier x, extract prisnor y, clear checkpost" over and over agian. there is little to no story in game at all.

1. GTA V/Rise of tomb raider (tie)

GTA series has always been most overrated franchise of all time and this is no exception. it make me sick how can everytime new GTA release and got 10/10. only good thing i can say about GTA that city looks nice and feel alive. the shooting suck, the driving suck, missions are boring and dull, story is trash, so is all 3 main characters. GTA5 is just rehash of what we have played many times before.

while ROTR is just exact same as TR reboot which was one of the worse game i have ever played. new TR games make uncharted half life. lara is one of the worst protagonist i have ever ever seen "this is soooo haard"

So what are top 5 most overrated games this generation has produce in your opinion?
#5 - Every Call of Duty is overrated. No news there.

#4 - You must be out of your M**********ing mind. Look we know you are only into "manly" FPS's, but the Witcher 3 is one of those games that easily earns it's perfect ten ratings. Excellent and challenging combat, unique and memorable quests/dialog/settings.

#3 - Not overrated either. This game was fantastic and the only reason you put it on this list was because it isn't like the 1990's game. Move on bro.

#2 - MGS 5? Yeah I'll give you this one. The story is a cluster fuck, the gameplay is sloppy and the overall tone is rushed and inconsistant.

#1 - GTA V, while I am long since over the series as a whole. This game is one of the most detailed and well put together open world games ever made. The characters were memorable, side cast included, the plot was fun, and Online adds endless sandbox multiplayer. I can't really see overrrated with this one.

For me....this generation.

FUCKING OVERWATCH! - Holy shit everyone is sucking Overwatch chode right now. Perfect scores? You kidding me? This is Team Fortress 3, it doesn't offer anything more than TF2 gameplay with an expanded character roster. The game modes are extremely limited, the fucking maps are beautiful but their actual layouts are a joke, and there is nothing currently in the game to motivate and encourage players to continue to play after the first couple weeks of Honeymoon period wears off.

Oh my god, yes! I bought Overwatch and it's been a ton of fun for me. I get together with 4-5 friends and it's a great time. The characters are fun, the abilities are fun, the game looks good, but how is this perfect? How is it being hailed as the greatest game ever? How is it getting perfect scores? What is going on?

There is very little content, and you already point to the lack of motivation beyond unlocking all the meaningless cosmetic items. There's very little in the way of notable progression (until they implement ranked play). But that's the thing! Ranked play isn't in the game yet. I'm not going to go to one end of the spectrum and say the game is bad, because it isn't. But it's also not phenomenal and perfect. And the fact that MAYBE it'll get updates, more content, better maps, etc. etc. etc. is no reason to be heaping praise on it now as it is in its current incarnation. It's ridiculous.

And even if the game does get more characters, maps, items, etc. It is Blizzard. Everyone know how LONG they take to update and add content to their games. So while the game is a lot of fun, and for what it is right now it's still a good game. It isn't a 10/10 masterpiece.

How about every new pokemon game? It offers little in the way of innovation. All it really does is exchange a few pokemon from the roaster with some similar redesigned new look. The only things I really noticed added are fluff features where you earn useless ribbons, the annoying berries, ect.
Really, if you were to go out and buy one I'd recommend the latest one because it's probably got the best graphics and that's about all you'd really need to know. I like the games but really the hype is what's irritating about it.

Pretty much any deathmatch FPS games (like Overwatch).

Games which are basically new coats of paint on existing games.

#5 Doom 2016: Just some guy killing demons over and over again. What if I want to make love to the demons instead?
https://cdn0.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/3790688/doom-cyberdemon-screenshot_1920.0.jpg

10/10 would fuck.

#4: Shadow warrior: Basically a guy swinging a sword around in a way that screams "Compensating." Probably working his way through some sexual repression too, considering how he apparently hates the demons but also keep thrusting into them with his phallic symbol. Also he has the humor of a twelve year old.

#3: Mafia 3: It's like GTA except you can do less. Kind of like comparing Twitter to Facebook, same concept, less flexibility and more spelling mistakes.

#2: Dues Ex Mankind Divided: Oh gee what's the message of this one? Could it be that Adam is Jesus?

http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/79e494904bc53f74a67b2a73b780ff01.png

I can't tell, it's so subtle.

#1: Squadron 42: Part of a game that I'm starting to doubt will ever exist and yet people keep throwing money at it. And it's amazing because it has pretty graphics apparently.

Let's be honest with ourselves. All "overrated" means is that your opinion doesn't line up with the majority, and instead of just saying that you act like there's something wrong with the majority and you're the only right one.

This generation in general. Since most of the games I have my eye on that are or have come out are also out on the PS3, I still don't see much point in upgrading. What's the point of getting a new games console to play these exciting new titles if they're perfectly playable on the current generation gaming platforms?

That's not how ties are resolved, B-Cell. When there's a tie, you do this.

1. Tie

3. Whatever

4. And

5. What Not

My List:

1. Doom
2. Shadow Warrior
3. Dues Ex
4. S.T.A.L.K.E.R
5. Half-Life Series

No way man, say it ain't so. You just didn't. :(

Witcher 3 is an almost perfect action adventure rpg. Basically as good as they can get. It deserves 9's and 10's out the ass, and then some.
Don't take anything he says seriously, his opinions weighs nothing.
Nobody's opinions weigh anything. They're opinions. Both are equally valid and totally opposite. I personally can't give a shit about any of the Witcher games. For me they are dull and bland, and totally uninteresting. For many other people, they are great games, that they totally enjoy and love to death. We're both right. We don't all like the same stuff.

Dues Ex, Half Life, and Stalker, are not games of this latest generation. Overrated, yes, but not relevant to this thread technically.

Shadow warrior too i think.

I do agree mafia 3 looks terrible. first mafia was masterpiece and one of the best game of all time. and they finally turn it into GTA clone. beside those who made first 2 are not working on third game.

Wait they made it more like GTA? I take it back, I can't wait for it to come out.

The Witcher 3 and MGSV I guess, but Uncharted 4 is definitely at the top so far.

Can I say that B-Cell is the most overrated game? Cause this guy has to be playing us like one.

My list: Everything you're excited for, cause with the constant threads that scream their praise from the high heavens as a "revival of the manly of manly men FPS with no emotions of hardcore badassery" nonsense. I genuinely think they're overrated from you alone (Half-Life was already on my shit list in the past anyways)

I remember when you praise first 2 witcher games as one of the best example of modern RPG long ago on GT during last generation. how times have changed. I quite liked witcher 2 but 3 just too boring imo.

5. Call of Duty advanced warfare I haven't played a CoD game since Black Ops so I don't know

4. The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt I like The Witcher, the combat could be beter but everything else is pretty great

3. Wolfenstien the new order I like this game :)

2. Metal Gear Solid 5 Phantom Pain the open world was vast but mostly empty, I had a lot of fun with the story missions though

1. GTA V/Rise of tomb raider (tie) I haven't played GTA since the third one so idk. Rise of the Tomb Raider much like Tomb Raider reboot before it remains one of my all time favorite games

just because you don't like these particular games doesn't make them bad or overrated. There's a reason tese game sell millions. If a million people think something is good and you're the single person that says it's the worst thing ever, then chances are you're the one that's wrong.

I did not know of this new Unreal Tournament...and that it looks marvellous! Variety in a fantastical setting should be agiven, the only limitations are your own imagination, especially if there are map creation tools. Let the colour palette explore many moods. Even if they aren't "badass." Will have to look further into this upcoming UT...

The story premise of Unreal Tournament, flimsy as it is, has always been that it's a televised blood sport and as such it's in the shows producers best interest to find the most exotic locales and vibrant setting in which people can murder one another for the entertainment of the masses. From space ships to ancient castles to active mining facilities and city streets, it's a carte-blanche in-lore excuse for the devs to just make whatever level they want.

The huge diversity of levels has always been one of my favourite features of the series and I'm happy that the newest version of the game is keeping up the tradition.

5. Quake

4. Wolfenstein

3. Half Life

2. Duke Nukem 3d

1. Doom 1&2

Honerable mention: Every single shooter from the 90s and early 2000's, especially Call of Duty and Medal of Honor.
