I would love Shogun 2. Feudal Japan is one of my personal favorite historical settings. Also, it was their first game, so it would be cool to see them update it with all the new things that they have learned in making these games since that first one. :)

Edit: This makes me sad, by the way. As much as I love TW, Japan is a setting I am just so not interested in. There's still a chance this is all just fake and we'll get something else though. I'll remain hopeful.
Hey, now you know how I (and many others) felt when Empire was announced. Unfortunately, they can't make everyone happy... except by making Rome2... ;)

I would like to see a proper full world version, complete with the ability to play all factions from Major Powers to small island tribes. Also with a time scale that doesnt go fowards one bloody year every turn...
That might be...hard to do.
Il assume your talking about the full world not the one year turn since i think shogun was only a season not a year. I understand that a full world would be really hard to do since not all countries were exactly at the same level of development. I could see it now small african village using pointy sticks vs the roman empire.
Yep, I was talking about the scope, not the turn-length.

I felt the same when they announced Empire....I wasn't very fond of the whole gunpowder age thing from the start, even though it did turn into a pretty good game(my opinion, don't argue with it).

Oh good. Looks like that Shogun link isn't legit (see OP update). Leaves it open for Rome 2 again...

Btw, can anybody tell if the ration of sand from top to bottom has actually changed?

The sand hasn't really changed as far as I can tell.

Also, think about this riddle which they have given the fans:

"In Spring it roams not
Maybe eastern sun rises
Nor will it show guns"

Please be shogun 2!

Hell, maybe it will be something we haven't played before.

At this time it's at 1744

So it's not rome (roam = rome)
it's not shogun (show guns = shogun)

Maybe eastern sun rises. Perhaps we could get a game based in China?
Possibly the ming dynasty?
Maybe another Japanese game that isn't shogun?

Nice. Let's figure that one out.

-'In Spring it roams not': I assume this talks about the release date. Possibly not, but seems most likely.

-'Nor will it show guns': No gunpowder. Already confirmed. Easy.

-Which leaves: 'Maybe eastern sun rises' Shit. Seems to hint to the possibility of oriental gameplay. But the word 'Maybe' makes me wonder. Possible that its set somewhere else, with the possibilty of eventually reaching the orient (ala going to America in Medieval 2?). Just a thought.

Or this interpretation.

1774 already.

I kind of hoped it would be something based around the franco-prussio wars era.

"I love that so many people are thinking it's going to be a new Shogun game when CA have spent millions developing a naval battle system for warscape only to then go and make a game that is pretty much landlocked -yeah like their really going to do that

I mean the Shogun naval encounters are legendary."

-Administrator on TW forums

Kind of an interesting angle he's got there. Hopefully he's right that it won't be Shogun II.

Talking of which, naval battles in Rome would be epic. What they'd have to include is troops which are transported on ships actually being able to participate in the battle(if you have archers, fire at the other ships; legionnaires board the enemy, etc.)

Sorry to disappoint you but on the official forums they(an admin) called that Turkish website an obvious fake.

Edit:

"Guys, speculate to your hearts content but please do not attempt to derail this thread by posting links to what is clearly fictitious and unsubstantiated information, I will not be giving out any more warnings on this point.

Anyone who posts such information or links to it from this moment on will receive 1 day bans.

Thank you."

That's exactly what he said.

I'm a frequent visitor and user of that Turkish site. I'm not implying anything, but a friend who basicly runs a CA acknowledged fan site got a raging CA staff member at the end of his chat screen when he re-posted that news. The "Turkish site" claimed that their E3 booth visitor forms(or something like that) were stating the booth name as "Shogun 2: Total War". They even posted a screenshot of it.

I'm not sure if it's real, but it's highly possible that they posted that "confidential" information, simply by misunderstanding what they were allowed to share with the public.

Anyway, never played Shogun, Rome was my favorite of the series. Maybe this will give me the excuse to try Shogun out.

There goes my first post to the Escapist forums. ^^

Edit: I noticed that the site removed this piece of "news". It seems fishy.

I think the dates are random. The point of these teasers is just that - to be teasers, not to actually give us a way of figuring out anything exact. The only thing we "know" is that it will end on one particular year. So what we should do is think of a particular event of special importance to the possible areas it could be and see if any years stand out and we can guess that might be the one it ends on.

Because of the riddle - not Rome, not Shogun, no guns, BUT IS in the east if I interpreted it correctly - and naval warfare I personally I think it will revolve around China including warring dynasties and involve Japan, Korea, Mongolia, and India for diversity of factions and greater use of ships. I only know some general history from these places so I can't guess a year but I bet this is where to look.

Anyone know some significant dates in Chinese history? Maybe the Yellow Turban Rebellion or the rise of the Han?

EDIT: I bet it's "Dynasty: Total War". I'll be so happy if I'm right :)

The dates definitely seem to be random. If there is a pattern to it it's undetectable because you could find important events for any year in any geographical area.
Also, the rate at which it's counting down seems to be random.

I'm pretty sure that it's going to be Shogun II, with Japan, China, Korea, Mongolia and possibly some other areas from Asia.

Random fact: there's no year zero. That might be why he ended his post in three dots...

Personally, I like the idea of moving away from gunpowder. Empire never inspired me to do anything other than ensure I had more cannons of higher quality than the other guy and enough infantry to defend them from assault. There never seemed to be much reason to do a lot of maneuvering in a battle except when defending against an unexpected attack. Incidentally, when conducting a fortress defense with little more than a few units of line infantry and some grenadiers, I found that grenadiers are absurdly overpowered. More than once two units of grenadiers were more than sufficient to completely annihilate an assaulting force as poured through narrow breaches in the walls.
