Shogun 2 please. I miss my geisha assassins. Oh and of course this: *in Japanese accent* "The enemy general has forsaken his honour, and is running like a wipped dog!" always made me laugh.

Has anyone thought of the Eastern Roman empire yet?

In Spring it roams not - Spring release date, not Rome
Maybe eastern sun rises - East > Byzantine Empire, not Rome > Constantinople?
Nor will it show guns - No guns back then and not Shogun

Explains Eastern Sun in the second line and how it could not be Shogun. Byzantine empire with the rest of Asia?

EDIT: Also would give us a chance to try out that new naval engine with some Greek Fire :D
This is a brilliant interpretation actually.

I just hope you're not right lol because the land battles at that time would only be a slightly more interesting version of M2TW where cavalry dominated the field. I didn't love ETW but one of the things I liked about it was that cavalry was balanced and had to be used carefully.

I never felt like cavalry was overpowered in M2TW. On the other hand, the artillery in Empire was just unfair. All your enemy had to do in online battles was to sit there and bombard you. If you tried to attack your troops would get shot with cannister and what not and rout almost instantly.

The only situation in Medieval I can think of where artillery was similiarly overpowered is in battles for bridges.

16th century, no guns, haiku, getting back to the roots...

Although it may result in a Historical Nerd Rage, as far as I recall Japan was at the height of it's Feudalism/Samurai shenannigans during the 16th century.

I put my money on Shogun 2.

I've never played multiplayer Total War but maybe I should try it. My opinions are about singleplayer modes.

In singleplayer ETW cannons are useless in a field battle but I've heard quite a few other people also say that cannons are overpowered on multiplayer. I wanted to test cannons so I made a custom battle once with a full stack of howitzers using canister and shrapnel against a full army of line infantry and a few cavalry units. I shot at them for several minutes as they moved into range (then the AI sat there just taking it) but they sustained very few casualties and I could only rout a unit by focusing about half my cannons on one unit. In other battles, I don't even use cannons because they rarely hit anything, get slaughtered easily, and any other unit is more useful.

As for M2TW, in campaign or custom battle I would make small armies of horse archers or just knights then give the enemy a balanced full-stack army of the game's "best" units and I would massacre them every time. It was too easy - nothing can stand against good knights in that game even in a frontal charge - and if knights are vastly outnumbered then you can just keep using hit-and-run and easily outflank. Then if I tried to use mostly infantry for a change it would be annoying trying to kill THEIR cavalry. Even pikes were useless because they would only work if they were standing still so they could easily be hit from the sides.

The result was that battles were always about fighting cavalry or micromanaging your own and they were boring and repetitive. Cavalry were like flies in M2 :(

Rome was pretty good about cavalry - annoying to chase down if you didn't have as many as your enemy but definitely not overpowered.

Hmm, my experience with cavalry in M2TW is kind of different. I remember a battle against Byzantium and I had about 8-10 units of knights(German Order, "Reichsritter", Feudal Knights) and I sent them all to charge one unit of Byzantine Infantry - they were completely wiped out.

Personally..I loved shogun <3

if they did another..I'd play it..but i dont think it could work as well now

That and well..they just got navy battles..so why lose that oppurtunity now?

I mean..I know there will have been navy battles..but just not on that scale, I think, but dont qoute me on that :p

At any rate, i can hope it's shogun..but it wont be..probably :/

Well the original Shogun game started around 1530 or so I believe, it's getting pretty close to it now.

Just an observation: If you open the Flash object alone in a browser it counts down to "0" like the OP said (because there are no parameters input from the html) but I noticed that years with less than 4 digits are off-center. (Enter http://www.totalwar.com/_landing_page/twTimerLarge.swf into your browser's address bar to see this.)

This means that either they will change the .swf file manually in Flash and replace the current object (which is unlikely since it would be poor web design to not have done it right in the first place) or that THE TIMER WILL STOP ON OR ABOVE 1000 because it seems they did not intend for it to count below that.

The fact that the clue is a haiku and talks about the "eastern sun" makes me believe that it's Shogun 2 but honestly anything that doesn't take place in an age where gunpowder units were a mainstay would be welcome by me.
