Also, way to go the Witcher's path, Bioware, and not allow female avatars, because you know, girls don't play that sort of shit....
Actually, last I heard you could be female. The exact wording of what I read said that choices "are limited to gender and class."

Not that you'll see any hint of the female lead. This is, after all, the company that hired one of the best female voice actors to play the female version of their main character and then refused (yes, she asked and they refused) to include the female version in the advertising. Expect the same treatment of Dragon Age.

I didn't think Dragon Age was crap. I bought it on release day, I've played it through three times and modded it excessively. I'm no less of a fan than you are, my friend. I love the game to pieces! Because I state things which were bad about the original, why does that mean I think it's 'crap'?
You love the game to pieces... but you don't see how they can do a sequel without changing everything? You're trying to argue two opposite points at once now.

Also, you're the one who use the word 'crap'. Don't act like I'm putting words in your mouth. What, exactly, is the crap here? The mod tools? The origins? The combat? If that was a poor choice of words on your part, man up and admit it.

IAmTheVoid said:
1) We know so very little at the moment about combat at the moment that it's unfair to make a snap judgement about whether tactics are coming or going. We actually know that they're retaining being able to zoom out for the PC version, and that they've actually billed the combat as highly tactical anyway. I doubt Dragon Age 2 is suddenly going to morph the series into God of War just because they've said that the combat will be quicker and more brutal.
Being able to zoom out will not make the combat tactical- it is a requirement for it being tactical. If it simply being patched on to the PC version after the combat is designed around third person for the console version, it will have little effect.

IAmTheVoid said:
2) But since we're talking about trailers, Dragon Age was also billed as a gritty bloodbath a-la God of War.
This simply isn't true. Seriously, google the phrase "spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate" and see what pops up. Go back and watch the Sacred Ashes trailer. Notice how they have the main character fighting along side a party?

Also, if Bioware doesn't want people drawing conclusions about the game from the trailer, then maybe they should step back and think about what this whole "marketing" business is about.

Don't really care about what you were arguing about, but your unrivaled ability to put words in people mouths is pissing me off.
Ah. You're one of those types of people. Glad to have pissed you off, then.

I thought we had agreed that ever since BioWare became part of EA their marketing department has been stupid. I mean, one of their trailers for DA:O used a song called "This is the New Shit." Yeah, great marketing.

Personally, I've always loved BioWare, but ever since the EA buy-out, I've been seeing the company move in directions I don't think they should be. This is the first game they've made that I've been significantly skeptical about.

Oh, wait no that was Mass Effect 2. Hmmm. Trend anyone?

I remember the very first trailer had Duncan talking over it re the responsibility of being a Grey Warden, n a sole generic looking Grey warden finishing off a few darkspawn dying on the floor, then opening a door to the 1000's of darkspawn on the deep roads.

This is most likely a similar sort of cinematic to wet our appetite

The video (making the distinction between pre-rendered and in-game) actually has me hesitant to get too excited over DA2. It looks like someone took cues from Prince of Persia's character design team, said "The main should be a bad-ass... like Kratos!" and then threw the mess at Bioware.

On top of that, we've got Hawke coming into the sequence after a -single- darkspawn (qunari, whatever, it could have been Dog for all I care) has just killed a couple royal guards and their magistrate, so he's a hero too late. Then he goes toe to to with the 'spawn and the only way he can win is by pulling some kind of crazy-ass god mode ace in the hole by reminiscing about his lost loved (?) one. So dark, silent male who wields unconventional weapons and uses the loss of his loved (?) ones as motivation... holy shit, Hawke is Batman!

Honestly though, my first impression was "Shit, now I'm going to be stuck looking at a guy's backside for 30 hours". Second thought being "Huh... wonder if that's supposed to be Morrigan's son". It's nice being wrong time to time.

Ah well, we shall see.

Surprised no one mentioned the voice in the trailer is Flemeth's.
If I say that was the first thing I noticed do I get a cookie?

For those complaining about how the his trailer had a main character with a preset appearance, and nothing but pre generated combat footage: I guess you've forgotten about the first DA:O trailer which showed, let's see, a set main character, nothing but pre generated combat clips. Oh, and that one had glowy eyes too.
True, but all of the Bioware pre-rendered trailers were pretty much "default" setups for the main. It would be too costly to show a variety and they would have to justify why they chose to show what they did. At least in previous DA trailers they showed more than four characters and 1 square kilometer of land.

My theory is it's Morrigan's child, given the whole demon arm glowy eyes part.
So? We've worked with preset characters before and customised them to what we prefer. Take Commander Shepard. Could still fully customise that character to what we wanted and the plot went just fine.

i got one question did that qunari use magic to stop the fire. cause it seemed like he used a forcefield thingy to push the fire away. I thought qunari didnt have magic using soldiers and kept mages on leashes with their toungues cut out so they couldnt corrupt others

I remember reading that the console version of this game is going to be a straight up fighting game with less real time strategy stuff involved and the PC version was gonna have more RTS elements than the console. So yeah I'm so excited for this game right now.

Read the thread, he isn't Morrigan's child.

THIS GAME IS GOING TO SUCK SO MUCH, LOOK AT THE BIG SWORDS THEY HAVE, DRAGONAGE:ORIGINS NEVER EVER HAD GIANT TWO HANDED WEAPONS. BIOWEAR ALWAYS WANTED TO MAKE A JRPG. AND THE WORDS AT THE BEGGINING WERE STUPID, IT MAKES NO SENSE.

PRETTY COLOURS THOUGH.
All the weapons in Dragon Age:Origins are ridiculously oversized; the daggers are shortswords, the longswords are hand-and-a-half, and the two-handed swords were just...too big.

For all the "Oh Noes its a JRPG! DO NOT WANT!" comments, this trailer was developed by Blur Studios, same guys who did the Sacred Ashes trailer. Please visit the DA2 site or BioWare forums. So far all indications are it will be DA:O with improvements, not one of those static-plotline JRPGs.

I could be wrong, but i thought it wwas a shock wave from an impact, not a force field

I expect any character in a video game to be pretty cool in some way. Especially one made by a company known for good design and writing.

That said, no pre-determined character of this sort is ever going to be as cool as one I create and customize myself.

Also I see no compelling reason why there could not have been an Elf or Dwarf fighting that battle, doing the eye glowing thing, etc....

On top of that this is just a cinematic, no real gameplay footage or anything.

Hey, it's always possible that my mind will be changed, but they are barking down the wrong tree, and I see no way how this would logically be changing anyone's mind about the lack of choosing character origins and so on if they had that opinion to begin with. I mean "Ohhh, they are making the hero of a video game look like a badass, and woooow they can make pretty cinematics" <--- Intended Sarcasm

Was anyone expecting anything differant? On top of this it kind of caused me to lose a bit of respect for the idea since it's so generic. As the article points out (albiet in a differant light) this is pretty generic, "chosen one" type hero in trouble calls on heretho unused abillities to surprisingly destroy a superior opponent. A clique exploited in massive numbers of genere books, films, and anime... why not pay some money for the liscence and have him go Super Saiyan too? Or maybe "Hollow" from Bleach. Or better yet liscence things to make him a Hollow, Super Saiyan, Fade Possesed, whatever... save fanboys the trouble of the crossover fanfics. It would probably appeal heavily to the level of audience they seem to be catering to. "Dragon Age II: Hollow Saiyan Boogaloo": with special Jurai noble potential to unleash in times of crisis but only if you pre-order from Gamestop (imagine the posters of a hollow looking Hawke, with spikey yello saiyan hair, and glowing "Lighthawk" wings and tattoos from Tenchi Muyo...)

Full voice over.... that leave no place for racial choice...
And they already annonced there will only have human as choice for the race

I am aware they announced that there would be no racial choice hence my comment.

Also, as I have said in previous threads "full voice over" is NOT an excuse. "Saint's Row 2" demonstrated that it is possible to have multiple voice tracks for a full voice over with differant actors reading the lines, and people being able to select a character voice at the beginning of the game as part of character generation.

Going by things like Anime and so on, voice actors are not all that expensive for these projects. Or at least not going by some of the interviews I remember. The price for doing voice in games seems to be overstated and I see little differance between voicing animation and voicing computer game animation.

I am critical because it seems like an effort to simplify "Dragon Age" much as they did with "Mass Effect", and most of the excuses are mostly efforts to try to avoid alienating the fan base who loved "Dragon Age" because of it's relative depth.

We're looking at greatly reduced options, and I do not like that in general. Such is my opinion.

Shiny trailer, but like others have said it smells too much like a JRPG approach. I didn't want to play this before I saw that trailer, and I am even less interested in doing so now.
