The fact that every time they think someone (usually a villain) is dead (or near death), they always have some miraculous comeback.

P.S. I know this happens in a lot of movie/tv shows etc. But seriously, How many times can you celebrate that you've killed Cell or Buu only to watch it regenerate for the 60th time... and how many times did Goku die like 3 or 4?

Catholic School = Yuri

Maria HOlic had a nice twist on it, so it's excused.

So that means you Maria-Sama, and Strawberry Panic!

I'm also pretty sure the Pope does not approve.

When the character learns the most powerful move to defeat an enemy. Then later on they learn an even more powerful move to defeat another enemy. Rinse and repeat.

It's even more annoying because every time they learn this new move they go off on some bogus training session while everyone else gets their ass handed to them. They always say it's the most powerful attack they can learn yet they always end up learning something more powerful.

I've got a few beefs.

1- Overcomplicated plots that require a guide to understand.
Inuyasha and the Dragonball franchise are a few that like to do this. The latter I could excuse because I used to watch every episode on Toonami, or at least try to. However, it still had the problem of "if you miss a few episodes you miss the whole series." Animes like Cowboy Bebop don't do this a lot. Sure they have a few running plot points, but the show at it's core is about a group of bounty hunters who suck and can't get a break. Comedy animes like Cromartie High School are also good because they just give you a cast of characters and then leave what happens to the writers. The over complicated ones are complicated because they are TOO BLOODY LONG. Since the show does well, they have to keep it going with one stupid plot to another stupid plot over and over, while STILL not completeing the plot they had in mind in the first place.

2- Stupid gimmicks.
Death Note had a nice gimmick: the lead character/villian had a notebook that can kill people. The anime was balanced out with a excellent, suspenseful plot. That is a gimmick done right. Then you got stuff like Code Geass, which I haven't really got into. It's just another anime with robots and tits and one of the gimmicks is that he has some kind of GoldenEye thing in his skull like the grown up Enzo from Reboot.

3- Unmoderated use of breasts
Everyone likes breasts. But goddamn I see too many that use it as a selling point; trying to cover up humongous flaws with a pair of H cups. Also, like Ak-Jay menioned, some are underaged and not explained immediatly. The Izuna DS series, not an anime but close enough, is a big offender of this. Back to the main topic, breasts need to be used in moderation. I don't want to watch an anime with my cock out unless it is an advertised hentai. Some also like to take it a step forward by giving everyone large breasts and unnatural jiggling to make up for paper cutout personalities; Divergence Eve and Goddannar are animes with basic looking plots that use tits to make up for them, which I why I refuse to watch them. Then you got shit like Eiken. Goddamn Eiken.

4- Too Japanese
South Park was made for a western audience. Anyone who has watched FLCL with the commentary on (or have just watched the style parody in episode 5) would know that South Park didn't do well in Japanese markets because the jokes didn't make sense to them. It's the same thing over here, but we just eat the shit up like a crate full of Pocky. Some animes are made with overly Japanese themes and humor because they were made with the intention of humoring the locals. Over here, they just leave audiences in the dark; at least the ones that don't go onto forums and try to speak Japanese and all that shit. My example for his one? BoBoBo. This one is a tragety because it's absurd, fast paced humor was something that I would've liked. Eventually, I just grew tired of it. The final straw though came from a chaged translation that ruined everything for me, which i'll get to in a bit. Meanwhile, FLCL changed the Japanese references to western ones, which may have piss off some weeaboos, but not me; I can understand why they did it. What BoBoBo did was, in one episode, said that Jelly Jiggler was "some kind of ninja" when he was obviously trying to be a Shinto priest. (there were shost flying about) By now people were fam ilar with Inuyasha's Shinto preists since they bring it up every episode, and Jelly Jiggler wasn't even DRESSED like a ninja!

A couple animes that get off the hook with the whole "too Japanese" thing are ones like Cromartie High School and Azumanga Diaoh that keep it to a minimum and would sometimes have 'cultural notes' on the DVDs.

5- Tried and true themes.
I don't watch Mecha animes. I've seen Gundam Wing and I could bring myself to watching Neon Genesis, but the whole fighting robot thing is now just being a hooker for unimaginative writers. There's too many of them! Someone up there also brought up the harem anime, or at least animes with the whole "socially awkward boy lives with a large number of attractive women" gimmick. For me, the jury is still out on the matter. One of my favorite animes growing up was Tenchi Universe which, in retrospect, had characters that were likable and girls who were not over-the-cup breast creatures. But I see where he is coming from; they too are many in number, usually in the hentai genre,(who also like to do the whole "he's not blood related, so let's fuck him" thing) and some are just made to give the fanboys more tits to look at during the obligatory bath scenes. (YES, Tenchi had that too. But once again, the girls were actually more down to Earth and not sentient blow up dolls.) Honorable mentions include anything that involves space travel, Japanese High Schools, and feudal Japan.

But really, these are things that were made for the amusement of Japan exclusively. Some people just want them to be imported over here because they're too lazy to import or just watch YouTube clips. This is shit that Western audiences don't understand, and shows like Excel Saga show that not even the Japanese understand! In conclusion, anime is made for money and japanese television. They've proved to be a respectable form of animation now, which now opens the door for exploitation works that, despite what all the little fan cults want to convince that isn't true, are made for a quick buck or just filler.

the anime formula as i call it wherein:
-main character starts off the weakest in teh first series but because he's so determined, overcomes all his friends
-friends who are there just for the sake of being to focus on someone other the main character when he's engaged in a long overdrawn fight or when he's inevitably injured at some point
-the encounter with the main badguy of the series midway through the series which results in the maon character losing (but surviving) and realises that he has to train his socks off and isnt so great
-the final fight with the main badguy in which the main character still isnt strong enough but after an epiphany/death of a friend/discovering the power of friendship half way through, suddenly becomes uber powerful and wins

and of course filler and comedy relief characters

this formula applies mostly to DBZ, naruto, bleach, shaman king and various others that would take too long to list

See, we watch dragon ball exclusively for that. We have a drinking game where every time something predictable and cliche happens we drink. We don't stay sober for long ;).

Ok, I have two problems

1) Flashbacks...y'know the sort of thing, explaining their move in case you're so retarded you didn't get it.

2) Extended fight scenes where it takes about 3 episodes to power up...>.>
They are actually just a deliberate move to pad the episodes out! Explanation:
I remember reading that since Dragonball was produced at about the same rate as the manga once a week, the producers had to pad out the episode as they didn't have time to add extra stuff that wasn't in the manga. Dragonball was s popular that every major anime has followed suit!]

Omdz come on the shouting the moves is cool. Don't you wanna be a ninja???

CHIDORI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's true that battle anime is always the same.
New enemy
Enemy shown to have overwhelming power.
Training
Fighting at equal strength.
The climax. It looks like it's all over but then the hero wins somehow.

Death Note is the best.

Hmmm... maybe the biggest cliche of animes is that I can't give a sh*t about none of them, because in my not-so-humble opinion they suck big time. ^^

The last few episodes of Deathnote are about as bad as it gets... With the introduction of two new main characters within the last... (Six?)... Episodes. That's horrible writing, it's like they made it up as they went along.

Also, another thing that's bad about most animes is that they're almost always based on a manga. Animes that aren't based on mangas, like Code Geass for example, are much better.

and then reveals that he had some kind of secret move that he did not use against ichi(for no reason, he almost freakkin died that time-_-(nutcase!))
Zaraki didn't use all his power because he didn't want to kill Ichigo, he just wanted to fight a strong opponent long enough for him to have fun/ feel the rush.

The only cliche I can think of that I really hate is a predictable ending. I need to see a little creativity dammit!

Yes i agree the second season is definitly worse than the first. If you was to actually read the manga there would be more detail. Things were missed out.

I'm gonna start watching Code Geass now. Is it a mecha anime (robots involved)

oh i thought this was about something else...I'll play along

* anime these days looks cheap - just because a show is getting popular they cut back on the cost of animation (so it looks shit..although bleach hasn't been effected by this)

* everyone bumming over ''death note'' - yes its great..we get it

* everyone hating on naruto - why hate something that's gotten popular? cartoon network made a great move taking that show on so many people relate to naruto for many reasons.

* people bitching about hentai - you know what it is..why the hell do you watch it if you all your going to do is ***** about it

* people still calling anime ''hentai'' even though it has no sex in it - probably mostly because of the company ''manga'' that and some ecchi in it suddenly makes it ''hentai'' -__-

....that's all i can think off

When they do that wierd gasping breath thing every time a character pauses in silence?

Yeah, that's starting to grate on me a little.

The Inuyasha Formula

1) Meet villain
2) Get beaten
3) Train
4) Do something else
5) Beat villain
6) Repeat 1-5
You forgot the part were you repeat every single tiny little detail that has happend in the series thus far and compress the whole summary into the first four minutes and frequently remind us just in case we had Alzheimers or short term memory loss... Oh I almost forgot alot of people saying KAGOME! or INUYASHA!! or TETSUSAIGA!!!!!!! or my favorite (sarcasam) SIT!!!! in between. And then end all that shit with a fucking lack luster cliffhanger!
