Everybody blame Nick Clegg!

OT: This is never going to work. And I would think, that David Cameron and the conservatives would be intellegent enough to realize that.
This would be a very suprising move to make, expecially from the lib dem point of view, because it won't achieve anthing economically, it will piss off all the people who the lib dems have already pissed off, the students, and therefore the lib dems will not get any votes because students are pretty much the only people who will vote for them.

That's just silly.

I'd have no problem with it if it was an opt-out solution for parents who'd want to spend less time with their child, take less interest in what it was doing on-line, and overall take less responsibility for raising and protecting it.

Do remember, parental disinterest and absence is totally irrelevant compared to seeing a nipple when it comes to damaging children's welfare. Let's censor the net and make it so parents can justify spending even less time with their kids, and all the problems will surely go away.

If it passed (which I doubt it will), I'd be discontent if I were a UK citizen, either a lot of tax money will go into identifying and categorizing all the porn on the internet, or ISP charges would go through the roof.

HA!
Good luck UK :p

I'm surprised the porn industry doesn't get on this argument and hammer down some good old fashioned lobbying.

Opting out is fine and dandy, but if someone Opts in, then someone on the other end knows you are looking at porn.
And THAT is what I find disturbing about this.
Thinking someone is checking out porn is one thing, knowing that they are, is another.
I also find the whole restriction of knowledge to be very disturbing.
Whats next? Violent sites? "questionable" material? Seriously...

The article mentioned in OP said:
THE UK Government is to combat the early sexualization of children by blocking internet pornography unless parents request it...
Well, that's good news if you own the internet connection where you reside.

Otherwise, stock up on porn and wait until someone finds a way around the filter.

EDIT: After looking at some other posts, this is pretty bad. Shouldn't you be allowed to do what you want to in the privacy of your own home? I want to see one kid that was fucked for life for accidently opening a porn site.

Much as the US is bringing capitalist imperialism to its logical conclusion, other places are bringing nanny-state politics to their logical conclusion... Why can't we ever find a happy medium? An ounce of prevention may be worth a pound of cure, but in this case a ton of prevention is just going to create the need of a different cure.

Sex, after all, is a perfectly natural process, whereas violence is the opposite. Why is it O.K. to kill people but not have sex?
Violance is natural aswell, go and watch animal planet, lots of stuff getting fucked up in that. It's humans, trying to be more civil, have put all these bans and laws on it.

Were trying to make the gap bigger between ourselvs and them, but were are still animals. How many people die in legal boxing matches?

On topic. £10 says in 100 years time our children will be taken off us an hour after birth and raised by the government till working age, were they will be released to make the government more money.

Can't you just see it coming?

Kids will still be reading there big brother's/dads playboy stash, or worse, we have all seen those dirty mags on the top shelves of the corner shop.

There will still be porn dvds hidden around the house, it's been the way of men for decades. The net is just doing it's job, being the quickest and easiest way to get something.

Agreed.

Ontopic, I'm getting paranoid. First Australia, then the US, then Japan, now the UK, if New Zealand gets affected I'll be pissed.

Looks like the ol' Irish I've known in the lil' coal mining community 70 years since the struggle were right. The Butcher's Apron itching for blood huh?
I'm sorry, but I truly did not understand a word of what you just said.

Irregardless, if a kid wants to watch porn, they'll find a way. Putting silly laws on it is just wasting their time and yours. So go send that government funding into something useful, like time travel, or cloning.

Wow, priorities.

I think that they should first concentrate on getting 20Mb internet (at least) to the whole country.

As it stands it's ~18 quid a month for both me (on 1Mb) and soon, the folks getting 40Mb internet.

Fair? HA!

England is a fucking joke - I miss working in Norway.

This is a load of bull. What would an australian news site know about this? This is a sensationalist story and nothing to be concerned with

am i the only one who isnt against this
im not some over protective socially conservative parent who thinks everything new is currupting children, im an 18 year old boy with a very liberal view of sex

but it does strike me that this isnt actually that bad, sure it does bring up the question of wether parents should be doing better so this wouldnt have to be considered in the first place, but it could help stop some mere revolting behaviour that youth of this nation keeps exerting

also im not against people looking at porn every now and then (i do on occasion) but it does seem some tennagers (sadly mostly men) are addicted to it, im not saying a bit of arousment every so often is bad, it beats sexual repression and the damage that comes with it but if we can to an extent limit the amount of porn children are exposed to then that is good

Yet i will agree it does raise another question, countries like france have a very liberal approach in terms of wether kids see porn or not and they have very low sex crimes and a less sexualyy obssessed population, it is possible that cracking down on these sex and nudity things may make people want it more (forbidden fruit is the sweater)

I don't understand what's different. At the moment "safe search" is set on as default on Firefox. Unless this means you have to phone your ISP and ask them to allow access to porn. Can't see that been the way however since a parent might want porn while not letting the children view it. So are we talking about a parental lock type of system been put in place. If so, then good. I'm all for it. Either way I don't think it's going to make much difference.

Am I the only one who feels that if it wasn't for me having access to porn from the day I became sexually active, I would have most likely had more sexual partners and become more likely to contract an STD or get someone pregnant.

Fuck's sake...

I'm a teenager, not in the UK (thank god), and I think this is just retarded. I'm not a regular porn viewer by any stretch, but I still think that this is unwarranted and just totally silly. I don't understand why parents have the right to forfeit responsibility of their children. Not only that, but when are we going to stop viewing sex as an immoral, disgusting act? I've not had sex just yet, but I plan to, and it's not something I take lightly.

The issue isn't pornography. Trust me when I say, I've seen a shit-load of pornography, and it's really not the issue. The issue is respect for women, and for sex, and that isn't something that is learned from the internet. That is something that is learned from family life, and social life. I've seen a craptonne of porn, but I don't see sex as a trivial thing. I see it as something that should be handled with care and sensitivity. When myself and my girlfriend have sex for the first time, it won't be some seedy thing; we've already decided on that; it'll be something that we do because of our love and respect for each other. We agreed that we wanted it to be a loving thing, and it will be.

Again, I want to make the point that I've watched a craptonne of porn in my life.

The issue isn't watching porn, and I think I'm the living proof of that. The issue is that the teenagers/children haven't been brought up in an environment were women, bodies, and sex were respected.

It's slightly disturbing that the real issue is being so obscured here, behind the scapegoat of the internet. I can't believe that nobody can see this. Are politicians and do-gooder lobbyists/activists/parent groups the only people incapable of seeing this? It appears so.

1) They do realise that what you have to search to get porn isn't the sort of stuff that little timmy is gonna be searching, right?

2) I see this as the start of a very slippery slope. Whose to say what's too sexy to be let through? It could lead to banning stuff on anatomy, so "fuck you medical students" in other words.

3) Again, we get the wierd reaction that places sex as worse than murder. I still don't get that.

In fairness when I was like 11 I searched "melons" in order to find an actual picture of melons and the first thing google images gave me was... well, you know.
