Army Men: Sarge's Heroes

The level design was mostly quickly shat by designers who enjoyed a chili bowl. But the ones that weren't were the embodiment what rats style mapping can achieve and was pure fun.

Army of Two
The game received mostly mixed to poor reviews. However the gameplay mechanics and levels were done exquisitely. My only complaints are that the game was too damn short for its price and that the characters were all too douchey. However, sometimes they were a lovable kind of douchey.

007: Agent Under Fire, 007: Nightifre, 007: Everything or Nothing
Before, I start my rant let me put on my asbestos suit. There, I'm done. I actually enjoyed all of these Bond games more than I did GoldenEye: 64. When GoldenEye was released, I was already spoiled as a PC gamer with the bountiful options and privilege of multiplayer. Although it was fun gaming with a friend right besides me, it was hard to tolerate the splitscreen sharing of a SDTV and the clunky control system. I never got past the notorious escort mission where you must babysit the pants on head retarded Natalya, and I thought the innovative singleplayer wasn't that well put together. By the time I could learn to appreciate the notion of having multiplayer on the same system with a friend and the immersive singleplayer level designHalf-Life and Perfect Dark had already come out and perfected it.

Mine would be SAW. I expected a pretty crappy game so I bought it used from Gamestop to see if it was any good but so I could return it if it sucked. I was actually surprised with all the puzzles and traps that you have to figure out.

Another would have to be DJ Hero. I had seen reviews on it that made it seem fun but I thought that it would possibly get boring after a while, but I went ahead and bought it. When I started playing I couldn't stop. I got so into the game that I hadn't realized I had been playing it for over three hours.

Deus Ex.
I was late to the party, having not played it until recently.
I thought I'd give it a spin after all the worshipping going around.
Now I'm a Deus Ex worshipper too.

I didn't expect it to be horrible, but it was pleasantly more enjoyable (if short) than I anticipated. Love the show, though, so it could just be my love of the subject saving it. xD

Kung Fu Panda
This goes for the movie and the game. An hour and a half of Jack Black is not my vision of heaven. But he slipped into Po really well (leaving most of what Jack Black is in tiny ripples, that can still be felt, but not enough to ruin them). The game is fun. And the multiplayer (1-4 players on the same console) is really fun.

Bullet Witch
It might not be the best game ever made (or even all the great) but it sure was fun. And I don't think anyone can deny the awesome power of calling lightning, creating enormous tornadoes, and summoning meteor storms.

Phantom Dust
When I first heard the concept (it's like a live-action card game), I was really excited. But everyone else wasn't. I got it and it proved to be as quirky and amazingly fun as I thought. And even better, it delivered an interesting and unique story.

Lost Odyssey
I was told it was a Final Fantasy knock-off and I should probably just play FFXII. I'm VERY happy I didn't listen to that person. Because Lost Odyssey is one of my favorite games. And it delivered a lot more than any FF game I've played.

I could totally go on and on. But I won't. xD

I'm with you on R&C, and J&D.They made me love the 3rd person cartoony Genre.

I loved Sly Cooper 1 and 2, not so much 3.

Mirrors edge. Though frustration nibbled at my heels due to its clunky free running system, it defnetly was fun and different.
Ditto, however I tried playing it again and I just didn't like it for some reason
Also same thing happened to me with Far Cry 2, however that game was the reverse for some people, ie looked awesome before release but then failed to meet expectations

O yeah, these games were awesome, especially the Jak series and InFamous, havnt played all the Ratchets yet but have picked them all up recently, (except Tools of Destruction, thats the only 1 I am yet to purchase) as for the Sly cooper series I have never touched them, but it sounds like I would enjoy them, maybe have to keep an eye out for them.

A few games surprised me pleasantly (unfortunately, only a few)

1.Gorky17 (ODIUM)
Although a TBS weaker than X-Com the atmosphere , gameplay , music and mild excuse for a story made for a compelling experience I still remember.

2.ARMA 2
A good FPS that was original in gameplay at a time when everyone in the industry played the copy paste game.

3.Penumbra
Horror at its best. I thought a game so cheap would be garbage but after playing a while i was hooked.

Why do i feel i live in an obscure corner of the video game world ?! - hmm i wonder :))

WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2009

Ok, so, I enjoy a good wrestling game, but nothing has really touched Fire Pro Wrestling for me, and the last time a North American wrestling game came close was WWF No Mercy on the N64. I've heard the talks about Here Comes The Pain, etc, but the Smackdown series really did nothing for me at all. I picked up 2009 because it was super dirt cheap, and it had been a couple years since I gave the series a chance, figuring that maybe a few years of improvements has finally paid off. Well, basically, 2009 kinda met me halfway. It's not as bad as earlier games that made me despise the series, and it's got some pretty fundamental issues that prevent it from being my ideal wrestling game. But it is just enough that I'll still play Fire Pro Returns on my PS2 if I want a serious wrestling game, and I can have a bit of fun playing 2009 for the change of flavour. If only the Royal Rumble and Ladder Match modes didn't suck so hard...

I thought that I wouldn't like Final Fantasy XII. But I actually did like it and still do.(I'm going to either get flamed or yelled at for this comment)
I really like FFXII, the first Final Fantasy I did EVERYTHING with.. went back and did that with some of the others when replaying them but still. I never really understood all the hate for it =/

OT: I really enjoyed inFamous when I thought I wouldn't (came with my PS3) and I also really liked LOTR online, would have played it as well as WoW if I had the money
Many people hate it because of how it was different from the other ones. Also because of Vann which I can sympathize with a bit, but I just leave him in the party with Penelo.
Nah, lack of side quests, ridiculously obscure (as in not mentioned in game) secrets and an annoying cast and plot turned me off the game. The combat was alright though, better than random battles.

I was unexpectedly amused by Shadow Hearts. I turned it on and thought it looked a bit ropey, but it was unique, charming and fun.

Crackdown

Never even heard of it but saw it on the shelves and thought to just give it try and I tell you what, running around while carrying a gangmembers car, jumping as high as a 5 story buildings while dodging rockets and bullets is still one of the funnest things to do in my apare time.

With that said, I can't wait for Crackdown 2...

..."will you come blow shit up with me" lol

What games have you played which you know are bad, but enjoy nonetheless?

King Kong
(admittedly this wasn't a buy as I got it bundled with the PS2 but I really loved this game, it was great fun)

So Escapist, have any games only you and noone else like?
I agree with King Kong, i thought the game was great, i used to play it when i was bored and had 5 hours to kill. Non-stop from start to end.

Also dude your avatar is so awesome, i cant stop laughing, is there a video you can link me to or something?
Sorry, I found this avatar randomly on a forum, I don't know the backstory but I love it

On an unrelated note, that clip is from this Star Wars Hyperspace Hoopla thing. Search it on youtube, and you'll fin it.

Anyway, Dark Void was a surprise. After seeing the ZP review of it, I thought it was crap. But I bought it anyway. Gameplay is actually fun, especially the flying, but the difficulty was outrageous at times.

Lord of the Rings: The Third Age

Easily one of the stupidest ideas ever to have been created. I don't think it even recieved that much attention, from my recollection. But easily one of the greatest games of all time! The story (after you get over the fact that you're the fellowship of the fellowship follower's on a quest to warn them of some impending doom) was very solid, the game mechanics are superb, and nothing beats playing "Evil Mode" where you go through various battles in the chapter you just completed fighting as the bad guys. And, you guessed it, this means you play as bosses too! Gimmie some more Bahlrog any day!
I thought it was really good as well although I found the jump in difficulty to be a bit annoying. It was piss easy up until Osgiliath then the game suddenly turned around and kicked me in the balls by ramping up the difficulty(or maybe I just suck who knows)

Disaster:Day of Crisis

On paper a mix of gameplay styles that shouldn't work(3rd person exploration, first person on rails shooty bits, driving and QTE's).Combine that with a B movie story and incredibly cheesy dialogue(talking resident evil levels of cheese)and you have the recipe for a shit game.I thought it was great though

I used to be a sucker for hype, if I saw the movie and could afford it, I'd buy the game. Everyone else (including reviews) would tell me the game sucks, but I would still love it to pieces. I have had bad experiences with this type of thing, but my good experiences include:

Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man's Chest
(Loved the movie, loved the game, even spent hours saving up and buying the extra characters and weapons)

King Kong
(admittedly this wasn't a buy as I got it bundled with the PS2 but I really loved this game, it was great fun)

Avatar: The Last Airbender (and sequels)
(The zelda-like gameplay through me and, although short, was quite enjoyable)

I liked Sonic 06 and didn't have too many problems completing it in 2 days.
Also, the Iron Man movie game. While it really had nothing to do with the movie, being Iron Man was just the tits. So much fun, but quite a difficult game.
Woot another Iron Man fan. I found it fun too, though it also made me want to kill myself on certain levels :p
The level where you destroy that massive airship made me want to tear my teeth out. I died on Normal way too easy, and only got Bronze timing every time on that mission..
I like that level, but it was annoying. Somehow I managed to beat the game on hard without getting too frustrated, I think it's cos I was only playing ofr achievements. When I'm playing for fun I don't stress out, but if I'm trying to complete something I get controller-throwy. I started again on easy to get the hero objective for "save pepper." and now I can relax when I play it for fun =P

Unexpectedly good games, you say?

Obviously that's subjective, but I've found that I'd rather play the "meh" games than the over-hyped ones. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy me some Bioshock, Fallout or Mass Effect, but recently I've been playing a lot of bent-and-battered games, like: Haze, Turning Point, Fracture, Dark Void, Timeshift, Stormrise, and many more besides. I'm having as much fun with these as I am with the big names, and the best part is that I can usually get two or three of them for the price of a big name game.
