Well the world is pretty much fucked 'cause of religion.
Has an e.g. 9/11.
Well the world was pretty much fucked because of lack of religion.
Has an e.g. Stalin.
Exactly the same no?
One word, Hitler.
And Stalin wasn't an idiot just 'cause he was an atheist, he did what he did 'cause he wanted too, and him being a Christian doesen't mean he wouldn't had.
This is exactly what I mean.
When a Christian does something bad, he does that bad thing because he is a Christian.
When an atheist does something bad, it has nothing to do with his atheism!
I implore you, read this, and try to take in what I am saying.
People who blame religion for anything at all are either not in full possession of the facts, or hate religion so much they are willing to distort reality to attack it. Catholics and Protestants get on very well in England and in most countries, but in Northern Ireland they were killing each other for years. When the Protestants were lobbing hand grenades at Catholic funerals were they
really thinking "Transubstantiation my arse."? It's circumstances that drive events, not religions.
Modern Islam is shaped by events in Palestine, Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq, which has led millions of Muslims to conclude that Western governments have got it in for them. 9/11 was merely a symptom of those circumstances. If you start from the point that circumstances drive ideas, then as a non-Muslim you can engage with Muslims in discussing how to deal with George Bush's (and subsequently, other presidents) Project for the American Century.
If you start from the point of view that all religion is nutty, you've got nothing more to say to a Muslim than, "How can a mountain move, you idiot?". However unreasonable some actions are, there is always a reason for them beyond religion, because religions very often reflect the reality of peoples lives.
In short - the Islam of a shop-keeper in Glasgow is going to be different from the Islam in the caves of Tora-Bora.
