Well this is just disgusting.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/7098480.stm

The news says this woman in Saudi Arabia was gang raped 14 times and, while the men were all trialed and convicted, she is now being sentenced to 200 lashes and 6 months in jail for participating in a sexual activity.

Strange, since I never knew being gang raped was defined as "participating."

Also, while it's not in this particular link, I read this woman also fell pregnant. Which is one the reasons she had her punishment increased from 100 lashes to 200.

Frankly, this sort of thing is atrocious, and shows the horrible outcomes of having a government so heavily influenced by religion. Not to mention extremist religious rulers.

Now don't be mistaken and assume I'm anti-thiest, I'm not. But I belief no government or court should be influenced by religious views and instead just do what is fair and just.

This is not just.

I'm sorry but thats what you believe. Even though I agree with you thinking that you really shouldn't be held accountable saying that you "participated." But you have to look at it from the other side as well. I DO NOT AGREE WITH WHAT I'M ABOUT TO POST BUT I AM PLAYING DEVILS ADVOCATE. She COULD have taken the proper measures to defend herself after the first rape... or the second, or the third, or the forth. I have seen rape protection bra's, and other things that could have been used to protect herself.

I don't think that her getting lashes is o.k. or fair but I don't think you can do much now.
She was being gang raped, kinda hard then to ask for a pause so she could put on her anti-rape bra.

Anyway, this just shows that religious law is incredibly stupid, and that people who enforce religious law are retarted. Poor woman, but lets be glad she isn't stoned to death, although that sounds kinda...sick, but always look at the bright side of life huh?

Well.... I dont agree with it iether. I was just saying that she could have taken the precotions to save herself before ever getting raped. Its sad but its a different country with different laws, and views on different matters (I.E. rape).

She is being tryed by a loophole in their justice system, if that is to believed that she was forced into the car when raped. If she wasn't, in their justice system she is at fault for being with a unrelated man's car.

But the justice system is extremely fucked-up there anyways, they have death sentences for rape and the participating men got between a year to five.. When they doubled her sentence, they also doubled their sentence.

What I find extremely wrong with this is that legal counsel was banned, leaving her to get raped up the bum by the justice system which she knows little about, probably a reason why her sentence was able to be doubled.

EDIT: It was doubled because the court thinks that she was pretty much starting up a controversy using the media to her own gain.

EDIT2: Futher looking into it, the justice himself is at fault, he broke the law when he banned legal counsel. So if he gets convicted and his own license pulled, she might get a different lighter sentence.

To quote this dude/dudette ...

"Being a muslim, I think it's a big injustice done to the girl. If the court doubled the sentence of the girl, they should have at least given the death penalty to the rapists."

I am. For a good reason too: This is the kind of retarded bullshit you get when your country is run by people that believe in magical invisible men in space that tell them how to do things, and then pervert and subvert every teaching by said men to suit their own needs, and extend their own aims, while simultaneously abusing their power to force said perversions on people.[citation needed]
Fixed. I'm one of those crazy people who believe in invisible men in space, and I'd rather you not lump me in with the megalomaniac usurpers they call leaders over there.
Nothing good ever came of religion thank you. But if it makes you feel better, I don't care so long as people keep it to themselves.

This is a good example of how the Middle East may look down on us Westerns(including Europe and Canada) but I can just point at shit like this. Look down on us they say? Last time I checked none of our countries punish rape victims. Fucking asshole.
We are a different religion than them. That's reason enough for them to "look down" on us.

Next time they openly "look down" on us, I say we acknowledge the fact by replying with a Tactical Nuclear Warhead. See how much they "look down" on us then.
After reading this shit I wonder how much I really am against Nukes.
Ya your right an innocent person was put to death so we should do the same thing to thousands of them.

I fucking hate Saudi Arabia for bullshit like this .... and once in my life I'm supposed to go there for Pilgrimage. Sad, sad, set of events.

Even though this event is a direct product of Wahabism, it makes me really fucking ashamed to even belong to a religion which has even a slight association to this sect. I just hope that people realise that not all places are like this and not all Muslims advocate it.

Yeah, let's invade Saudi Arabia. And create more of these ...
http://dir.salon.com/story/news/feature/2005/06/24/prostitutes/index.html

The amount of hypocrisy from 'westerners' is so fucking huge. The Saudi Government is run by evil goons, that I can agree with, but don't associate every fucking saudi with them, because you will be surprised at how little really support this government.

While most people have already made up their mind about how Arabia deserves to burn can I just add in this one comment.

Sharia law is often dependent on the authority that quotes it, rather than the words of the Koran. In the same way that certain groups in Christian countries 'interpret' the Bible.

Sadistic idiots can hold up either to perform outrageous acts.

But it's far easier to condemn something than look into the differences.

Well, if you read my previous post you would have seen my point about how many people in the general populace actually support this. How many think that this behavior is all right? Honestly now. Also, I most made the Nukes comment out of anger. At the very least the men who did the rape, ordered the lashes, and carried them out on the gang rape victim should all be shot in the head then dumped in a hole in the ground with no marker over the mass grave.

Well, I dearly hope that you are right. Because anyone who believes that punishing rape victims again should be shot.

...Uh...What am I missing? This seems more like a social movement of people going "...well...this is kind of cruel...we should stop.." kinda thing... Even the guy's "conversion" is the year AFTER the movement started... I admit I couldn't be fucked reading the entire page so... what am I missing?

But hey, ever considered that we wouldn't need to abolish slavery if we didn't enslave people in the first place? Minor detail right?

When did the subject of slavery come into this? This thread is about the injustice of a women who was gang raped and then lashed as a punishment for it. Trust me, she is not the first nor will she be the last to suffer the indignation of being punished for being raped.

Like I pointed out earlier, she is not being punished for rape.

She is being punished because she got into the car of a unrelated man.

Oh right, then it is her fault she got raped right? Is that their reasoning? She is a rape victim. In America all those assholes would go to jail for a long time. It kind of souncs like you are backing the courts decision. Are you?
