Given that Doom, Street Fighter and Mario brothers were classic works of cinematic genius, is anyone else as excited as me about two more of our favorite games getting the Hollywood treatment?

I'm willing to give them a shot, even though they probably won't turn out well. I think Gears has more potential for the screen, but we'll see, I guess.

Please, please, please let them be good. Bioshock actually has a decent chance as it's got a great story, and Verbinski's good, though I have a huge pirate fetish so my oppinion of him may be rose-tinted.
As for Gears, if done well it could be a great action film, emphasise on the if done well.

I dont hold high hopes......there not directed by uwe boll are they?

if they are....there going to suck and i wont see them.

if not, they will probably suck but ill see them anyway.

i hate uwe boll and what he does to movies..i still have house of the dead and bloodrayne flashbacks that have cost me quite alot of money to my therapist.

Remember about how sarcasm does not travel well over the internet? Yeah, be careful. And I for one actually do have hope that these movies might be good. They have a lot of potential, and I hope that in this day and age people will be responsible enough to not take these two beloved game series and release a horrible mutilated film version of them into theatres.

They should both be great. I mean, BioShock is a good template to work with and Gears of War is just blood and guts so there's nothing really to worry about.

Totally. And also how could I have forgotten Tomb Raider? Another classic. I still don't know why people prefer the Shawshank Redemption to it.

Both have the potential to be good:

Bioshock has an exelllent story about man hubris and is set in a steampunk underwater city with super powered monsters so it should do pretty well assuming the director has his ducks in a row

Gears may be a little more difficult to shoot, but if they are able to get a great story in and are able to balance the action with story it could also be a decent movie

I think Gears and BioShock have potential, they just need to be placed in the right hands.

And does nobody remember the Final Fantasy movie?

If the studios keep their mouths shut, the directors acknowledge that video gamers are an untapped and incredibly bitchy market, and they stick to the original story, then yeah, they should do okay. That said, a lot of things have to come together for these to work.

Don't forget House of the Dead! Why, that one was so good it had actual game footage spliced into it to ramp up the awesome levels!

In all seriousness, both of them have the potential to become decent popcorn summer films - you're never really going to get Schindler's List, are you? - if they throw loads of money at it. Bioshock, with action man Gore Verbinski behind it, probably has the most potential if they rip off Alien and ramp up the mood lighting, while Gears could be decent if they just go CGI-mad, employ some bearable actors and give a Saving Private Ryan squad feel to it, only with ACTION and CHAINSAWS.

Gears has a lot more potential: see Starship Troopers, but imagine less campiness and comedy and more tragedy and war. It could be done well: it just depends who does it.

Bioshock though, that's gonna be perverted harder than a basement filled to the brim with tentacle porn. Sorry for the image, but I can't hold ANY hope for that one at all.

I agree, Mario Bros was pure undiluted excellence, up there with Zombie Strippers.

Edit- I'm sorry, I meant to say disagree and excrement. This thread has too much sarcasm, and is at risk of imploding.

You see, what needs to happen is this.

The people who wrote the story, who conceived the idea in the first place to do the script for the movie. As opposed to some writer looking for his next pay cheque.
