I'm hoping Shogun 2 crashes hard, if only to send a message to Creative Assembly to stop using the same crappy engine as they did in Empire, all the technical and performance issues included. Seriously, they didn't even go with Napoleon's more refined engine, they went right back to the shit that made me hate Empire and almost give up on Total War games.
Lolwhut? Err... Napoleon's engine is an upgrade of Empire's engine. All three games share the same engine, but each time it's been polished and improved due to better experience with it. You can't possibly, POSSIBLY, know that Shogun 2 has the same performance issues as Empire did on release.
The demo does not count, it's terrible. Essentially a Beta version of the game that shows off practically nothing.
That's why I said that Napoleon's Engine was more refined, it was an upgraded version of Empires but based on my observations of the Demo it looks, plays and sounds exactly like Empire did. All the improvements made by Napoleon, the better performance and the improved visuals are obviously missing.
You know, the whole reason companies release a Demo is try and convince people to buy it. Its their way of saying "hey, look at this
DEMOnstration of our game and see if you like it." This is what they chose to put forth to the public, and it utterly failed. If they had labelled it a Beta it would be another matter. Your right, maybe the full game will be better, but if they think that Demo was good enough to make people buy the game I don't hold out much hope that the finished product will be any better.
I actually I agree with you, to a point. The demo is a terrible demonstration of the game's good points, and I imagine will turn away more people than it brings in.
Nonetheless, I'm confused by your comparison of this game, one based on a pre-gunpowder style of war, to Empire while Napoleon, set during Empire's timelione, gets off free.
As for this, "All the improvements made by Napoleon, the better performance and the improved visuals are obviously missing. "... no.
We can't tell if Napoleon's improved AI is missing. The whole demo is scripted, unless of course you use the FreePlay mod from TWCenter, which shows off the CAI beautifully.
The Campaign AI wasted me by a sneaky backdoor naval invasion while my army was busy elsewhere, it successfully lured me into an area which I thought was safe, before blocking off my escape route and killing me with its hidden superior force. I have no opinions this way or the other on Battle AI at this time, as I have yet to play anything but the scripted fights.
Performance-wise - firstly, no. People have had nowhere near the issues with this demo than Empire. I'm a regular on the TW forums and, while there are performance issues sometimes, it's not even close to the buggy, crashing mess that was Empire's unpatched state. PLease note that only recently does this demo even support 2 cores on CPUs, so people with multi-core CPUs (including myself) were not getting their full performance.
Fun fact on that note - I'm using a 3-year-old mid-range system, and I ran even the massive Sekigahara battle on Ultra unit sizes and Ultra graphics, without difficulty. That's damn good performance, but I admit, that was my good fortune and others have not always been so lucky.
Lastly, visuals. No. Just... No. Please, find any set of screenshots of this game (preferrably ones that show off the enormous increase in animations, including actual moving faces showing fear (I can PM you those, if you like) and the awesome fighting moves, like kicks to the head and numerous funky sword moves.) on Ultra and compare them to Napoleon or Empire on Ultra, and you'll see the natural progression. Each game looks astonishingly better than the last, this one outstripping Napoleon by far. Every little detail, the leaves blowing in the wind, the arrows protruding from the chest of a corpse, all are are an amazing improvement. In fact, the visuals are one of the things which have received nothing but universal praise.
For all you can find reviewers and previewers talking about their AI/performance issues, you'll find that this game receives the praise it deserves for its looks.
Whew. That was a mouthful, I just had to explain why this game is not Empire, and why even by our early measurement standard (the demo), it is superior to both Napoleon and Empire in technical terms.
