This is the equivalent of finding a useful bit of Javascript code on some website and copy-pasting it into your own and claiming I AM PROGRAMMER NOW LOL! But you haven't learnt anything about the syntax and semantics of the Javascript language.

I won't be impressed until we can write our own pieces of meaningful genetic code without copying them out of some other cell. Then we can start preparing our zombie defence shelters.

This is going to be the talk of the day at school!

Look! They're petri dishes!

Anyway, this is a major advacment in Human Technology, I really hope I get to see these achieve their potential in my lifetime

I wonder if by "in the far future" he really means 2012?
Well I suppose if nature doesn't kill us the Government will. I don't know which is more lame, seriously what about some sort of cool apocalypse like Zombies or killer Digimon?

Soon, scientist will be able to keep people alive forever, by creating new cells for the body.

As long as you continue to go for your daily/weekly/monthly cell infusion.

Hmm. This puts me in mind of a certain race from Mass Effect which created a synthetic lifeform which became sentient and destroyed their civilisation...

Quoting the article:

Scientists in the US have succeeded in developing the first synthetic living cell.

The researchers constructed a bacterium's "genetic software" and transplanted it into a host cell.

The resulting microbe then looked and behaved like the species "dictated" by the synthetic DNA.

The advance, published in Science, has been hailed as a scientific landmark, but critics say there are dangers posed by synthetic organisms.

Dr Craig Venter says yeast, chemicals, and computers were used by scientists
The researchers hope eventually to design bacterial cells that will produce medicines and fuels and even absorb greenhouse gases.

........

Professor Julian Savulescu, from the Oxford Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics at the University of Oxford, said the potential of this science was "in the far future, but real and significant".

"But the risks are also unparalleled," he continued. "We need new standards of safety evaluation for this kind of radical research and protections from military or terrorist misuse and abuse.

"These could be used in the future to make the most powerful bioweapons imaginable. The challenge is to eat the fruit without the worm."

Personally, the number of uses for this technology, and their implications, boggle my mind.
Have you heard of Murphy's law? Don't you remember Dolly the cloned sheep? That technology isn't ready and won't be for a least 5 to 10 years. Its like every exploitation systems Apple and Microsoft don't get good until all the bugs been taken care of. Also, Window Vista? Like Asta la Vista PC.

What makes this article annoying? It like many other science things will not see light on the news.

Anyone else know we slowed light down to an observable level by using a NEW 5th state of matter? Probably not many do because of how shit the news is.

Well one step closer to being replaced by something better.
I don't really see what the big fuss is about the onlt difference between this cell and a "normal" one is that a computer build it's dna rather then "nature".
Just another case of science wasting money on useless shit no one needs or cares about.
Yay for playing god I guess.
Yeah, because artificially building living organisms is so fucking easy. You do realise that this technology could lead to some serious scientific advancements, like the eradication of genetic defects, the artificial development of biofuel, the creation of vaccines and the disposal of carbon dioxide? There's likely a ton of other stuff possible too. Stop and think for a second, and you'll realise that all that "wasted money" you ***** about has improved your life rediculously.

FOR THE SWARM. Sorry, I was a test subject for the healing properties of this stuff, and it has some weird side effects.

OT:This is a big deal.Come on people! Why aren't they responding to this news?
It may have something to do with there already being a thread about this in the Religion & Politics section :p

But, people seem to be posting now.
Bleh,I never look in that section.
You're not the only one.

It's always the same few people posting in that section. Cuddly Tomato, Amnestic, Skeleon, and me.
i'm there too....

But yes, it does get boring without some fresh fish from time to time. Diverse views are too rare to make that section even interesting.

OT: FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK YEAH!

I want my pet dragon now. its totally possible to create a hexapod lizard with emerald green scales, horns, and wings for its central limbs. WANT. NOW.

*facepalm*
They did that in 1995. This article isn't blocking the news.
