I wonder if by "in the far future" he really means 2012?
Well I suppose if nature doesn't kill us the Government will. I don't know which is more lame, seriously what about some sort of cool apocalypse like Zombies or killer Digimon?
HELL. YES. The only thing I would enjoy slaughtering more than zombies would have to be digimon, killer or not. I do have to admit, though, I'd feel terribly embarrassed when they finally got me...

What makes this article annoying? It like many other science things will not see light on the news.

Anyone else know we slowed light down to an observable level by using a NEW 5th state of matter? Probably not many do because of how shit the news is.
ScienceNews FTW. I saw an article about that.

Reportedly 5 m/s. Thats what i heard. Sweeeet isn't it. I guess star wars laser blasters aren't so far fetched as we thought.

Not sure what's more scary. The prospect of a weaponised artificial super-virus, or that image in the OP.

MAKE IT GO AWAY IT'S STARING INTO MY SOUL

Hmm. This puts me in mind of a certain race from Mass Effect which created a synthetic lifeform which became sentient and destroyed their civilisation...
We only defended our right to self determinate in the Morning War.

We do not wish harm on the creator-race at this time.

Peaceful co-existence has a non-zero probability. We need more data to evaluate such a possibility further.

Well that's pretty fucking cool. Just one more step to cloning and the inevitable future depicted in The Sixth Day.

That and I like how the professor has the same name as me :D
well to be fair, this isn't exactly cloning, but a synthetic copy. and also, cloning technology is already fairly developed and available, so much so that scientists have even said really any scientist/small laboratory could effectively afford/achieve cloning (so much so that there is worry of rogue scientists trying to create their own crimes against nature)

on topic, i think the benefits of this breakthrough are astronomical, but at the same time, the dangers are just as great, if not greater

Well one step closer to being replaced by something better.
I don't really see what the big fuss is about the onlt difference between this cell and a "normal" one is that a computer build it's dna rather then "nature".
Just another case of science wasting money on useless shit no one needs or cares about.
Yay for playing god I guess.
Yeah, because artificially building living organisms is so fucking easy. You do realise that this technology could lead to some serious scientific advancements, like the eradication of genetic defects, the artificial development of biofuel, the creation of vaccines and the disposal of carbon dioxide? There's likely a ton of other stuff possible too. Stop and think for a second, and you'll realise that all that "wasted money" you ***** about has improved your life rediculously.
To what end ?
What point is there to moving forward when you don't know what you're moving towards ?
Perverting the natural order of the world for no reason other then to perpetuate this meaningless endevour, hoping that in the end we'll have some justification for our actions ?
Blindly stumbling along without any foresight doesn't help anyone.

*Facepalm*
Another day, another good discovery by scientists, about to be turned into a dangerous cash cow.
Seriously, the only way they think this is meant for the public, is that it's already been used in some form of atrocities, we'll probably never hear about.

If they need a human test subject: sign me up
I am aware of the risk this new tech has, but man, this is awesome.

Somehow this reminds me of [PROTOTYPE] which just makes this more awesome.
Fuck God, let's become one ourselves! (at least we carry responsibility)

This I know, but they were never able to successfully create human DNA, but with this, it's one step closer.

Also, the part about the renegade scientists making their own creatures just reminded me of that upcoming movie Splice which I think will be fucking awesome

Right now this is good... artificial cells could have a lot of uses... And I think this artifical life is a bit cooler than the usual robots/programs become self aware wishy washy ideas...

However... In the future this might just lead to our downfall...
I just hope I'm around to see it...

really? huh, i thought cloning human beings was about as simple as cloning sheep, (tho i might have just assumed that,)

and which is awesome, Splice, or creating freaky mutants? splice looks good, tho the idea of scientists creating genetically altered creatures kinda scares me, especially since it is almost certain a reality at this very moment somewhere,

We live in a beautiful time in which we can now create our own life and all we do is make Terminator and Xmen jokes. I'm not sure which is more amazing

If you read my post again, you might notice the four examples that I gave for the benefits of the technology. Biofuel is a clean alternative to fossil fuels, so being able to mass produce it with synthetically developed organisms is quite clearly a good thing, as is the removal of CO2 from the atmosphere. That can be done by developing organisms that absorb it. That's two excellent examples already, or are you one of these that cries "hoax" whenever someone mentions climate change? The other two examples given could advance medical science greatly. If human life isn't a good enough justification for scientific research, then you might as well start rubbing herbs on your tumours and start praying to Imhotep.

Does anyone else see my argument here? Honestly, I don't know if this guy is ignorant or if i'm not explaining it right.

Well we eat sliced life form pretty much everyday... that's pretty much what OGM are... But doing it to animal life form is still a long shot
