I doubt that these can be used as an effective weapon though. They would certainly be potent killers, but as mentioned earlier controlling them would be a huge issue. So you could easily screw yourself over by using them, leading me to doubt their use as a weapon. Though I could easily wrong. This research really could branch out to so many different things from here.
I'm thinking Stargate Replicants.

Interesting, this could be the first step towards super soldier. Making artificial life, perhaps we could also further improve genetics. This could be a step in the right direction, but of course, movies have shown us that corporations will only use this knowledge for EVIL!

Yay for playing God!
This joke totally applies now!

Scientists finally found a way to make artificial life out of any material. The big headed scientists went to God and said "We don't need you anymore, we can make life from anything."
God says, "Fine, we'll have a competition to see who can make man better. We'll do it the way I did it, out of dirt."
The scientist said, "That's easy" and picks up the dirt.
God stops him and says "Find your own dirt".

I heard that a long time ago in church and actually found it quite comical.

Realistically? This is the start of a branch of science that should allow us to bio-manufacture on an inndustrial scale - new chemicals, such as medicine, fuel, plastics, etc, could be generated by these cells. Hell, we could adapt them to be CO2 vacuums to lock it up in calcium compounds, for example. And it could at last provide a good way of harvesting solar power. But thats at the VERY least a decade away. But still, good news.

The beginning of the end?

Since super robots are the only conceivable outcome of this.
I'm thinking mutants/zombies.
or mutant zombie robots...

OT: It's hard to judge right now. Like that one liquid they're developing to help prevent people from bleeding out by reducing the tissue's need for oxygen. Over all it could help, or we could get some Jason X shit and have metal zombies running around...

Well, we've been making the steps toward initiating Skynet for ages, now it's time for Blade Runner to get a look in...

It will be a war between the Synthetics and the Organics. We'll probably win.
Yeah better get stocking up EMP's I guess.

Hmmm, well I think this is a good thing overall despite the bad things (like bioweapons) that will doubtlessly come from it. The trick is going to be both stopping the goverment from overegulating it and the related research, while at the same time seeing reasonable safguards implemented that won't get in the way.

On top of this, we need to carefully look at the industries that are going to be rendered irrelevent by this development. Right now one of the big dangers is going to be big businesses with a stake in maintaining the current status quo and technologies they profit off of trying to buy up all the research/patents and ensure they aren't use, or otherwise finding ways to kill it in it's crib.

Going by the article it seems like we're looking more towards the building blocks of living technology rather than robots. Stuff like the living ships in "Farscape", "Tinman" (from books and an episode of ST:TNG), or for anime fans the technology of "The Holy Raalgon Empire".

Of course this is only a first step, keep in mind that the article is careful to specify that the cells are not yet fully synthetic.
