Gar sat in the back of the group, extremely quiet. He waited until the rest of the potential trainers had left before speaking. "I apologize for my silence, Professor, but I am not a naturally social person. I was endeavoring not to attract attention from the rest of the potentials. My....situation is rather unique, I'm sure you're aware.
"In any case, I would like that Treecko. It....reminds me of myself." Gar took the proffered Pokeball and thanked the Professor before stepping outside and lighting another cigarette.
Releasing his new-found Treecko, he looked it straight in the eyes. "I have no doubt you dislike me at the moment, but we will be working together, hopefully for a long time. I have never seen the point in naming a pet, but.....I will call you Newt. I want you to understand why I am calling you that, but now is neither the time nor the place."
The freshly-named Treecko gazed at it's new trainer with some apprehension. "Tree....cko. Ko!" It jumped up on Gar's shoulder and tapped him on the head with the stick it had in it's mouth before running off to bother the other trainers' Pokemon. Gar sat down on a nearby bench and awaited it's return, smoking quietly.
