I think its good to get attatched to characters in a game as it helps you get immersed in the game but to feel actual love for them is just creepy.

Anyone else think Bastilla from KOTOR was hot. You could make her walk around in her underware lol

Actual love on a bunch of pixels? Nonono.

It's ok to feel a connection, as such, with a video game character. After all, game developers spend a lot of time developing the personalities of their characters to make them more likeable/repulsive. So they come across as "real" people, with real feelings. But the thing to remember is that they AREN'T real. So anything beyond a small crush or connection is a little strange.

Real people have real personalities to fall in love with. They're genuine to that particular person, and haven't been written in or altered by people with differing personalities. Characters have a personality created and developed by a bunch of people, and despite how likeable that personality may be, it just doesn't exist in our world.

I get this with characters I roleplay with a lot, exept they're more, "Man, I would love to meet this guy," rather than a crush. I suppose it works the same way with video game characters.

In response to the original question posed by the poster, brain chemistry does not differenciate between real and virtual, so yes it is normal.

As for me, I have a thing for Lara Croft and Nariko (Tomb Raider and Heavenly Sword, respectively).

The girls from Eternal Champions, specifically Shadow Yamoto. What can I say other than I was young and just realized that girls don't have cuddies.

Romantic love has never even crossed my mind for video game characters. Yeah there are some hot polygons out there, but you don't see my sending in my X360 for repairs every time I go a month without a girlfriend.

As far as connectedness goes, I'd have to say the video game character I enjoyed seeing/hearing most was GLAD0S. The writing for her was simply genius.

James from Silent Hill 2.
Yes I know the guy is a psyhothic killer, but he is realy interesting three dementional character. He is realy alien in his madness to us the normal folks but it is realy easy to connect to his pain and anguish on personal level. Plus even in hell there is chance for redemption and I played to the game secound time just to see a happy end(sort of).

As a former sociology student, having feelings for fictional characters are natural and have exsisted since man first sat around camp fires telling folk tales. I mean, a lot of your romance novels are for that very reason, to swoon over the romantic notions of a fictional character.

I don't think i've ever experienced it though, it may just be my misanthropic nature. I mean I dislike most REAL people much less fictional people.

I think the best example for me are the romances in Baldur's Gate 2. There were times where it was mechanically better for me to drop someone from the party, but I just couldn't because I didn't want to, euh, hurt her feelings. BG2 absolutely excels in this, with jealousy between females and male companions flirting with your love interest. From time to time this would lead to a crisis where you'd have to chose which lady to send out of your party, or even to see your love interest fall in love with another person in your party. They even included a male romance, and that's not something you see everyday (I'm not even sure if there's any other game that did this recently).

Aerie will always have a special place in my heart.

In FF XII, the minute I saw Fran go into a flying rage and kick the collective asses of the Imperial Guard (even boot one guy's helmet clean off) I knew I was lovestruck.

Of course, 5 minutes later I didn't care-but Fran is still awesome for that moment alone.

I felt compassion for Alyx from HL2.. that story really got me tied down 'till I was all the way through.
