video game let downs.

There's been a lot of let downs for me, but that only started when I became aware of the gaming media and started paying attention to all of these upcoming games that are supposedly supposed to be YOUR NEXT GOD! But the truth is games are far more enjoyable to play when you have no expectations at all, even more so when you expect them to be crap. For example, when I was just a kid the only video games I could play were ones that I could rent, so every new game I tried out was a totally uninformed purchase so I had no idea what I was getting, except for the box art (though I instinctively avoided sport games and racing games for some reason). The result was, when I got a crap game so what? Its 5 bucks and it works doesn't it? And whenever I played a good game I was UBER TO DA MAX OVERJOYED. Point being hype kills games for most people, IE halo 3, I can barely look at that game :( And fact of the matter is 90% of EVERYTHING is crap, including video games.

same, but i dont want to be...
You're 2 months older than me; we're not supposed to grow out of gaming until we're married and have kids - stay vigilant! 2010 is set to blow our balls off.
I'm now 30, I have a better toy that is very likely going to kill me. The games all seem a bit tame!

A real stick in the mud aren't you?

The majority of big releases are disappointing in one way or another.
I see this topic show up so much that I have to be, because its one of the most annoying ones that comes up.
if it annoys you so much, why do you go into it?
bacause, and its not like Im yelling search bar at them, even tho I could since there are a ton of these stupid topics around
that still doesn't answer why you came into a thread that you dont have any interest in.
it sure does
"because" is a perfectly valid reason to respond to this thread

A decent racing sim with bikes would probably perk me up a bit!!

(sorry for going OT!)

Fable 2 was probably my biggest letdown. The removal of an armor system, and a mana bar just waters this game down to the bare basics of a game not an RPG but an regular game. I call this stripping of a game to more basic elements in order to accommodate the more "casual" audience CGS or "Casual Gamer Syndrome" this is where a game developer takes the genre their title has, and rips it apart til it is nothing but the bare skeleton that the genre ounce was. This has actually worked in a few cases to improve the game overall (see Civilization Revolution), but here it just kills the game.

Mass Effect. In the end I just couldn't get into it and still can't.
I completed it, but only because it was so hideously easy. But yes, the fact that 99% of the random planets were barren wastelands with no features was definately a let-down.

Modern Warfare 2 anyone?

Sure I'm grinding it like hell and enjoying it but it doesn't take away the flaws from matchmaking.

Spore, every Spyro game since the PS2 came out, Dawn of War 2, Dawn of War Soulstorm, Fallout 3, Oblivion, WaW and The Sims 2.
I'm with you on Dawn of War 2. Tyranids are my absolute favorite Warhammer 40K army, so I was ecstatic when I found out that they were finally going to be in a video game. I was happy, I was thrilled, I was- WHY THE FUCK ARE THE SPACE MARINES THE ONLY ONES WITH A CAMPAIGN?!

Any Crash Bandicoot or Spyro the Dragon game made after the PS1.
Agreed. Also:

Resident Evil 5 - The two demo levels were fantastic, and I was so hyped for the full game. Shame the rest of it was so mediocre. Don't get me wrong, its a solid shooter but it just never recaptured how good the demo levels were.

Alone in the Dark (Inferno) - Had high hopes for this, but damn it was disappointingly bad. Some nice ideas and fun gameplay completely overwhelmed by the frustration factor. Still, at least it wasn't as crippling terrible as the Wii iteration. Damn.

Borderlands - Soulless and annoying.

Metal Gear Solid 4 - So much hype, so little delivery. It wasn't -that- bad, but it certainly wasn't up to expectations. Remind me; was it a game or an interactive DVD?

Modern Warfare 1's matchmaking had the same flaws, and they were worse. I feel that the multiplayer in both was way too unbalanced at times, and this is mainly due to the spawn system. When I am killed by a harrier jet, and then spawn directly in the line of fire of the same jet, only then to spawn again near a guy throwing a grenade. That's when I rage quit if only to try and salvage my already horrible K/D.

Are there any mods to "fix" Spore? No?

Then I'm going with Spore. It was going to be so super-ultra-cool, and my brain still thinks it is... But then I remember that after 2 hours or so into the Space Stage, it gets too frustrating to be fun.
There are loads of mods to "fix" Spore. Have you actually tried a google search?

What.

OT: Hmm, I don't get let down much...Fallout 3 I guess, it was OK, but not even close to my expectations.
I've played both Fallout 1 and 2 and 3 was not the same game. It had a few of the same elements that had to be in there to call it Fallout but it wasn't like the original. It lacked the fun and playability the others had.
The thing here though is that Fallout 3 is a different game than the first two and must be judged by its own merit. Realistically, FO3, with it's first-person perspective, is in a completely different genre of video games than its predecessors and plays differently due to this, so to say you didn't enjoy it because it wasn't like the others isn't exactly fair, since that was the point, anyways.

Bad graphics, stiff animations (the same three attack combo endlessly, SO annoying), poor story, bad upgrade system, virtually no variety in the firearms, bad vehicle controls, clunky combat, and repetitive gameplay. BUT I KEEP GOING BACK TO IT!
If you don't mind my asking, what would you have done differently to improve the upgrade system? I thought it worked very well, personally. As for variety in firearms, there's an assault rifle, machine gun, grenade launcher and rocket launcher, so minus pistols doesn't that pretty much run the gambit for standard firearm variety in modern games? True, there aren't any guns that shoot shruikens and lightening, but in a game where you can take down armored helicopters by throwing pedestrians, this seems like a superficial issue.

As for me, I think my biggest let-down so far was Kane and Lynch: Dead Men. The trailers and reviews looked promising, but unfortunately it didn't live up to its potential.

Prince of Persia 2008

What a piece of shit.

After they perfected the arts of videogame combat and platforming in the SOT trilogy, Ubisoft must have had a board meeting a little like this:

'ok enough of that fun stuff, let's give gamers castrated platforming with overlong, QTE filled, frustrating boss battles!'

'But boss, that doesn't sound annoying enough.... we want to really piss fans off'

'Ok... let's make them fight each boss 5 TIMES!'

'Bon!'
Dude...i know. I'm a huge Prince of Persia fan...but when i played this. i was deeply saddened. Prolly my biggest video game let down.
Yep.I almost cried Disney flavoured tears when I played it.

I even found myself longing for the Dahaka to come back and kick his whiney ass

Wait, wait, wait. Do you seriously prefer Jak 2 to Jak 3? If so, why?

Also, spore was probably the biggest letdown I've seen in a long, long time. A giant buildup about the game and then it falls flat on it's face.
