50 Cent!

Ohh my god I will never play any game with his name on it ever again..was like grinding my ear against a cheese grater, and a cocky cheese grater at that.

All the protagonists from the Resident Evil games. Watching Wesker beat the shit out of not one but two Redfields in Code Veronica was absolutely amazing.

Clearly you're gonna hate Caim if you ever play Drakengard (Although, he does have a reason as to why he can't speak..)
Never heard of it until I googled it. FF7/8/13 and the only JRPGs I've ever played and plan on playing. I just find silent characters make games boring and uninteresting, no matter how much they dress them up. Perfect example being Half-Life 2 (never played 1).

How dare you disgrace the name of Duke Nukem

Though I do agree with Lara Croft, no personality at all.

Kratos.

They developers made an unlikable prick who's only thought is about killing things.
Then they gave him a family to try to make him likable.
Then they had him go and kill pretty much everything in such brutal fashion that any semblance of sympathy anyone might have felt towards him was destroyed.
Seconded.

No, Wait even better...
Yes, he did just commit the genocide of an entire city for his mindless vengence. Then after this he will go and bone Aphrodite. What depth!

Vaan from Final Fantasy 12. Basch was supposed to be the main character of that game...until it changed directors and late in development they changed main to Vaan instead all because Basch wasn't pretty enough. No joke.

and NOW Vaan is going to be in Dissidia: Duodecim instead of Basch! Go away kid! I don't care if you want to be a sky pirate!

Nero from DMC 4. He handled well when you were playing as him thanks to the Devil Bringer, but he's gotta be one of the whiniest wussies in gaming. Half of his stuff about his girlfriend made me wanna puke.
Oh yes. I stood and got bashed by demons on purpose while cackling. I commited suicide so many times in that game that I've come to think of it as the only thing I did. And cheerfully.

I think they tried to make him too much like Dante and failed.

Also, Shepard. Maybe I just dislike Jennifer Hale (I will get you, Bastila! Hunt you down!!). Her voice always makes me want to pick renegade actions instead of paragon.

And Ezio. He was simply annoyingly cheerful.

marcus fenix and master chief.

gears and halo are good games but come make the main charactr i litte bit more likeable insted of haveing them 7 foot tall and and in power armour with no emotion and the only thing interesting the have to say is were is the ammo.

insted make them 7 foot tall and in power amour and make them like shakespear.

imagen killing an alin with your fists while resiting macbeth...it would be awsome.

Video game devs can't always get characters right, and in most games there's always at least ONE playable protagonist that we have a negative reaction to, ranging from disliking to outright hating them.

Here we share those hatreds. Or we don't and the thread slips into obscurity. Whatever.

I'll begin first and piss off 99.99% of the male population here with my 3 most disliked video game protagonists:

Lara Croft
Duke Nukem
Cloud Strife
I can see why you might not like those charachters, I find it hard to like a charachter if they are a little too "perfect"

anyway I just realized you have an awsome username
It's not the 'perfect' quality that I dislike. They're just the ultimate juvenile embodiment of what's meant to be awesome. Lara's just a random chick who happens to have ridiculously-proportioned sweatermeat, and Duke is the ultimate 9-year-olds idea of what manliness is. It just gets tiresome, and building franchises around these worthless characters is just idiotic.

This doesn't apply to Cloud. Cloud's just a prick.

oh, and thank you for the username compliment :)

Tidus.

Just because your father happens to be the bad guy does not make it your story, no matter how many times you whine about it. You just stumbled into someone elses story and had a convenient link to the villain.

That and he's an annoying, whiny d*ck.

Oh and Squall too.

I cannot stand Micaiah from Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. She is a total b**** thinking that Ike (the hero from the last game and is playable again later) is the villain were it was her nation that was the invading nation that attack Ike nation. Ok granted her nation was currently oppress by the another nation but two wrongs doesn't make a right.
I can guess she opinion will change when she does team up with Ike later in the game but I couldn't put up with her when that will happen.

Gordon Freeman. I don't know why everyone proclaims him as an awesome character. He just ISN'T a character. For all we know he could be a psychotic maniac who just likes to kill things. Or a coward. Or both. You can't even judge him by his actions, because 90% of what he does is just what he's ordered to do. The other 10% is just running away.
Well, most people love his identity, the shell that they're supposed to fill with their own personality. That's the whole point, YOU decide who he is and depending on who you are he might be a scheming psychotic relishing every bloody killing he commits. He also might be a coward acquiescently following instructions from people much more familiar with the unfamiliar world he finds himself in because he wouldn't know what to do otherwise.

People love him because he is who you design him to be... and because they dig the whole 'theoretical physicist with goatee and glasses with a crowbar'.
But that's the thing; I CAN'T fill him with my own personality, because if it were my character, Freeman wouldn't be doing half the stupid shit that he does. He doesn't have a backstory, and worst of all, he doesn't have a motive. I know, I know, he's saving the world, isn't that motive? Short answer, no. WHY is he saving the world? I mean, it would take a LOT of convincing for me to start trying to shoot stuff, and it's not like Freeman is a soldier or anything. He doesn't really have anymore stake in the fight then anybody else, so why? The fact that we have to ask that question after two games is proof of Freeman being a bad character.

Edit: Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the Half Life games, I really do. It's just that Freeman deserves zero credit for how awesome the games were.

Nathan Drake, he is just not funny to me which just leaves him as a chatter box that I would rather shut up. The main problem is that in Uncharted he was okay, in Uncharted 2 they just wanted a joke a minute and to make him never shut up. There was more jokes than plot and they weren't even funny. I like Drakes looks, I like characters that have a good style or design so I respect that part but his personality is so off I can't help but want to smash my ears in.

Kratos, I liked him because he was simple and cool. A big guy with a lot of revenge to be had but when god of war 3 came and he did nothing but rage and ruin any sentimentality anyone could have for him by killing good people, killing bad people, messing everything up and weirdly spending ages trying to help pandora only to let her go to have another smack at zeus that was the final straw. He became as 2D as marcus fenix but a lout louder.

Tidus, I just felt like he was talking in slow motion, mimicking Titanic in an awful way and annoyed me. He's the only FF character I hate too.

I know I only mentioned PS3 games so that may sound fanboyish but I have a lot of respect for some PS3 characters like sackboy, ethan mars, Alicia Melchiott etc, but Drake and Kratos are two characters that just don't do anything but repeat there stereotypes and do so in such a loud and focused way it grates.
