First of all, virginity doesn't exist. It's a made-up concept, the state of not having done something. It's an arbitrary intangible invented by men who were worried that their children might not be theirs.

By fretting over virginity women reinforce the idea that they're chattels whose value is determined by their value to a man, which in turn lies in their chastity. It's hardly surprising that a women's studies major who presumably spends a lot of time thinking about this stuff and what it means should decide to exploit it in a deservedly cynical way.

The bid is irrelevant until someone actually pays it, so I don't see any point in discussing the 3.7m at this point.

Third, people who consider whores 'not human' are animals.

The actual matter of the selling of sex is a morally complex issue. Some of the objections to it are based on mere envy - 'why can't they work hard for a living like me?' Well, why should they want to? Where is it written that someone being better off than you for less work means that they're cheating?

Prostitution can be psychologically harmful for a number of reasons, and those reasons vary from person to person. Ultimately as long as it's consensual it should be each person's choice who they have sex with and why. There are many far worse reasons to have sex than money, and nobody makes most of them illegal.

If you actually care about the issue I'd suggest reading Confessions of a College Callgirl [http://collegecallgirl.blogspot.com/]. The writer is intelligent and articulate, and writes lucidly about her experiences, showing us how having sex for money isn't necessarily a big deal, talking about the times she's enjoyed it, but not shying away from the harmful side of it and the sense she struggles with of her self-worth being tied up in her sexual appeal to men.

If you don't actually care about the issue and just want to spout off along the lines of "omg what a slut!" I'd suggest you shut your pie hole. Seriously.
I'm impressed. The only thing I didn't really agree with was the animals part. In the same way that bigotry towards bigots is still bigotry. People are people, people are just wrong a lot.

You're right, 'animals' was hyperbole. Those people who dehumanise whores are still human beings. They just aren't very good human beings.

I'd have to disagree with you on this point, as far as i'm aware the first time a woman has sex they break the whateveritis and bleed because of it. Meaning that the first time a woman has sex will be different from all others.

Unless she already broke it doing athletics, or through masturbation, or in any number of other ways. Or the first time she has sex it doesn't involve vaginal penetration - although many girls who pledge chastity until marriage do just that, remaining 'technical virgins'.

And if we were to accept that hymen=virginity then we'd be faced with the idea that bleeding from ruptured soft tissues makes for a unique and special experience that you're going to treasure forever.

Tempting, but no.
My virginity is just as valuable, thus I shall give it only to the one I deem worthy.

ME!

Seriously though.
If I were a chick, I might do it, and then pull the whole 'You stuck it in, I'm no longer a virgin, get the fuck out' trick after they pay

The funny thing is, I don't think there was a clause saying "Whoever pays must be the one to take it". What if the buyer happened to buy her as a present for the local football squad or worse yet- his pet :p

The talk about dignity and the losing thereof is pretty ridiculous. If you're going to have sex with anyone, would you rather have sex with the person who's going to give you millions of dollars? (Though I hope she has some precautions involved in case of STDs.) As for whoever is paying the multiple millions, rich people spend ridiculous amounts of money on stupid shit all the time.

(Edit: Gah, this is what I get for coming back to the computer and replying to a thread I had up without remembering that I was browsing old posts! Can't I delete this post, or something?)

I can. This isn't awesome at all.
She's whoring herself out. I'm intrigued how she could call this 'empowering' when she's just reduced herself physically to a mere monetary worth. Whether she's being payed 3.7 million or 5 bucks, the title and implications are the same, but we're just haggling price. Disgusting.

Technically, the same could be said of, say, a plumber, or anyone else whose services are being requested.

Basically, anyone with a paying job.

No, the same couldn't be said.
Plumbing is a trade. A needed one at that. It serves a tangible and useful service to a community.
Prostitution is more of a desperate, selfish, and lonely attempt to grasp at some degree of intimacy that could otherwise not be gotten without paying some girl who may or may not be there of her own volition. It's a sad and lonely person who needs a prostitute, and it's a sad and lonely person who sells themselves like that.
