I started with Space Marines when I was about four, my brother introduced me to it and I was hooked ever since. I then moved onto Eldar, had a brief stint with Tau and then settled down with the 'Nids. Still have them all as well. My beautiful army kicked my brothers Chaos Nurgle Marines all over our shoddily made table.

I play Imperial Guard, despite Games Workshops best efforts on my first visit to buy 40K.

Me: 'Whats the best unit to start an IG army, command squad or infantry squad?'
GW Employee: 'A Space Marine Tactical Squad!'
Me: 'No, I'm wanting to collect an Imperial Guard army. Is a HQ or Troops better to start with?'
GW Employee: 'The best start to an army is a good dependable unit of troops that can do any job you need it to.'
Me: thinking *finally were getting somewhere*
GW Employee: 'Right, the best thing to start an army with is a Space Marine Tactical Squad.'
Me: 'But I don't want to collect Space Marines (the guy then looked like he owned every puppy in the world and I had just told him that they had all died) I want to collect Imperial Guard.'
GW Employee: 'But they have really good armour, a-and weapons. T-the-th-they're really good!'
Me: 'Alright I'll consider what you said.' (he then perks up)

Two minutes later he grumpily packs some newly bought paint, glue and brushes into a bag that contains something else I just bought: An Imperial Guard Infantry Squad.

I'm a huge fan of the universe. I read the novels, play the video games, and I've been known to spend hours reading factoids on the wiki sites. Hell, I even got my hands on the original Rogue Trader rulebook once just so I could see how much Warhammer 40k has changed (no Chaos, Squats, 80's punk fashion...it certainly was a wild, untamed IP back in the day). Despite my fandom however, I've never played the tabletop game. It just doesn't appeal to me.

I tend to root for the Imperial Guard myself. It takes a special type of courage (or coercion) to fight the various horrors of the Warhammer 40k universe with little more than a flashlight and T-shirt. Their tanks are awesome as well.

I play Space wolves and Imperial guard. So I'm a pure Imperium-player =P

Personally I don't dislike Space marines, but I do think they're waaay too common. =/

Hey at least we actually have woman in our army
The Sisters of Battle would like to have a word with you.
Arent sisters kept seperate from IG and space marines?
Only when the Commissars arent looking ;)
When the Commissars aren't looking? The 40kverse Imperium are implied to be very depraved behind closed doors, I'd imagine the Commissars are no exception:

Imperial Guard (very rarely is there a problem that cannot be solved with a few billion lasguns and two large buckets of dice)

My personal chaos related favourites:

Good, now that's out my system. I can get back in character.

Wretched Xenos scum! Cling to your "greater good" while you still can, the hammer of the Imperium has not forgotten you. We will crush you and your insignificant empire as soon as time permits.

You are fortunate that The Imperium has so many other greater enemies to focus upon. But worry not, your time will come.

Tau player here. For the Greater Good! And railguns! And Jump Infantry (jetpack)!

Seriously, JSJ is just awesome. Oh look, my commander is in firing range and in plain view of your guns. Not anymore!
Also markerlights. Oh look, your troops get a 3+ cover save. Not anymore!
And stealth field generators. Oh look, my sniper team is in plain sight of your guns. (You roll night sight dice) Not anymore!

I am a space marine because I started as one and at the time I didn't have the money to switch armies. And after a while I said Fuck It! and make a new codex for my space marine army who have broken away from the Ultra marines and now fly around space messing shit up. And they have some Orc, Tau, Imperial Guard and a whole bunch of mercs who just happened to want to join a crazy rebel army. Really, fuck the space marines and their strict army set-up! If I wanna put 3 lascannons, 2 plasma guns and a squig into a squad and you won't let me, I'll make my own fucking army!

I see...... you must be really fun to play against. No doubt the tournament staff has it's hands full with you, if you go to tournaments that is.

Lol, if only let would let me. I'll see how smug those Tau are now when a Baneblade uses deep strike because I installed a parachute.

But, moving on, I don't really go to the tournaments so that's not really a problem, but then again I can't play with the special rules a lot. But I was kidding earlier. I have more realistic squads. I made a new kind of warfare my army fights around. E.g. Instead of having everyone trained with heavy weapons and swapping heavy weapon duty through the squads, I have a couple of highly trained Devastator squads that either work as a squad or help other squads. And most squads have special rules or characters. So don't worry, a Squigioth won't Outflank your Hammerhead while it gleefuly snipes the testicals of my captain with a high powered laser!

I used to play Tau and my friends played Eldar and Tyranids. The Eldar I could handle but those bastard tyranids with their carnifex ugraded to 6 wounds and regeneration +2 Armour aswell was a fucking ball ache as I only had 1 hammer head and a few suits with fusion blasters.

I uses to and yes i also played Tau but only started them when they first came out and thought it was completely badass that they had a shoot range of 18" instead of the standard 12" Nothing like being able to take 2 shots at the enemy before they can shoot once.

Prior to switching i played another shooty race. IMPERIAL GUARD! had a 3000 point army that fielded a custom converted Leman Russ Vanquisher. Love that AP shell especially when up against the most bullshit armored vehicle in the game, the Land Raider. 14 armor all around is horse shit! >.<

I think the Orkz had me at green is best and red goes fashtah. Plus when I find out how that ACTUALLY WORKS, I was mind blown.

Still, can someone explain what makes chaos chaotic to me? A friend recently summarised the followers of chaos gods as this:

Khorne - Predictable and almost a huge self parody
Tzeentech - Wizards
Nurgle - HUGGZZZZ (seriously, why are they friendly?)
Slannesh - Don't know about them. But noise marines smite our foes...WITH THE POWER OF ROCK
