My main thing was timeline. Time between morrowind and oblivion (in game): About 10 years.
Time between Oblivion and Skyrim: 200 fucking years. What the hell, Bethesda?

lock picking, in my opinion, got a serious downgrade from oblivion, other than that, i can't say a single negative thing about it. job well done bethesda
Actually, I think that is one of the improvements Skyrim has over Oblivion. I never learned how to pick locks in Oblivion, I used the auto button and bought every lockpick I could.
guess it's not for everyone then... once you learn the basic idea of it, you will realise its tonnes better then skyrims

also, in oblivion, if you like the button mash style lockpicking, you should get the skeleton key

I have found Skyrim to be a step down from Oblivion in a few ways:

- No athletics or acrobatics. Really, I want to run faster and jump further as I progress in the game.

- The character creator is worse than the one in Oblivion (which was pretty bad too)

- The UI is ugly compared to the one in Oblivion. It looks like it just has a white/gray frame.

- The UI was designed for looks (that's a failed attempt) rather than functionality. You can't sort your inventory, you can't view your character when equipping stuff.

- Oblivion performs better at it's worst than Skyrim does at it's worst, both compared on the PS3.

Well, there are a few and I know there are more because I have read about them on the Bethesda forums. What say you?
Just wanted to say about the character creator...you couldn't be more wrong.

In Skyrim, the first...oh, 15 levels, are basically your character creator. Instead of defining you as "WARRIOR" to start, you just play how you want to play, and your character begins to take shape stat wise from that. Its really genius game design.

The UI does kinda suck, I'd love to sort things, but meh, its not a HUGE deal.

Thats my argument over with I guess, just need to sit back now and wait for the "your gay" responses to come flying at me again.
I don't get it... You own a gay person?

Grammar Nazi-ness aside, I would agree that the UI in Skyrim could be so much better. Hopefully a mod will remedy that in the (again, hopefully) not so far future.

I hated Oblivion's main story. The story aspect was interesting but the game play was not. I got sick an tired of the repeated Oblivion gate grinding. However, I did enjoy the side quests. But, ultimately, if it's the side content you enjoy significantly more than the main story than the game has problems.

Skyrim's main story however has be glued. I find the side quests fatiguing, however I think it's due to the huger amount of side quests there are. I prefer Skyrim, however the melee caster play styles made more sense in Oblivion.

The only thing I miss from Oblivion was spell creation and alot more freedom with enchanting, add that to Skyrims leveling system and destruction might not be so underpowered mid to late game

I couldn't stand more than about 2 hours with the potato people of Oblivion, so given the fact that I have spent about 40 hours with skyrim (and still playing), I suppose there can't be much about Oblivion that is better for me! I'll acknowledge that 2 hours isn't a lot to judge something on, but since Skyrim managed to hold me for longer than that , it has already done better.

The Inventory/UI in Skyrim is a bit arse though - I can't remember Oblivion's but Dragon Age's was a hell of a lot better. You actually got some useful information about a weapon, for starters.

I do, however, *really* like the whole skill/perk system. Now I don't have to pick a bunch of numbers at the beginning and then force myself to play through the results. I can pick a race with a certain selection of natural advantages, but then play how I want. I tend to lean toward rogue characters, but this time I can play as a rogue that wears heavy armour and has a few spells tucked away for emergencies, should I wish to.

I've also been pleasantly surprised by the archery skill. boosting Archery and Sneak has me taking out many enemies in one or two hits before they even see me, and I can always fall back on my two handed sword in emergencies ;-)

After read through numerous pages on this thread, this dude seems to have his mind ABSOLUTELY SET on oblivion being better, no way we can change his mind.

If Oblivion is SOOOOO GOOOOOD, go back to it, seriously there is nothing stopping you.

That my friend, is an example of you pointing out OP trolling. You can't take anybody's argument seriousness when that person ignores factual evidence.
Maybe I'm just being hopeful, optimistic and naive. I just figured that since he bothered to answer so many of the comments, and add new info that clarified a few things (but clearly couldn't be bothered to add those clarifications in an edit), that he's either not a troll, or an unusually dedicated one.

(If trollbaits have evolved from the internet's natural need to defend itelself rom trolls, maybe the troll themselves have evolved a superior cousin to the simple one-post troll: The Super Troll. Thye will engage in pointless discussions and even purposley add contradictions in thier "arguments" just to see ppl flaming about it. Scary thought O_O)

OP understand that here on the Escapist you're not allowed to deviate from the Hivemind, you must absolutely and without any doubt consider Skyrim the greatest game of all time or face the wrath of a million fanboys.

The one thing I really miss from Oblivion is the Journal system. I forget what I'm supposed to be doing / who its for in some of the malicious quests, the one line reminder isn't really enough for me. I liked having a proper descirption of what I'm doing, but thats just me.

Well since this is just you sharing your opinion I'll share mine. Here's why Skyrim is superior.

-Spells are finally introduced in a way that isn't cumbersome. (Oblivion's spell casting felt weak the same tiny bolt for every spell)

-Fighting doesn't come down to holding the block button until your opponent attacks then attacking twice. Repeat Ad Infinium.

-Dragon shouts make you feel truly powerful. Not like just some guy.

-Annoyances like repairing have removed.

-The enviroments are much more varied. (yea they use snowy mountain a lot, but it's a snowy mountain province)

-The dungeons feel epic and all have a story tied to them.

-Stealth has been improved with constant feed on how noticed you are.

-Voice acting. 'nuff said.

-Different races actually look different.

-You can make you're own armor instead of hoping some bandit will magically have it.

-Werewolves. The good kind.

Let's see, Skyrim is great game, Oblivion is not.

-No more skill picking at the start before you know what are useful for you playstyle.

-No more monsters leveling with you.

-Better, tho more crude looking, UI.

-No pointless skills like athletics or acrobatics.

-No more boring green forest all over the map.

-Actually more interesting main story line.

-Dragons!

....So wait, there arent any ways that Oblivion is superior. Oh well.
i like skyrim WAY better than oblivion but 1 argument i have never liked was the " oblivion is only forests" "morrowind and skyrim are more varied" its bullish, skyrim is as much mountains as oblivion is forests or morrowind was ashlands.
Yes, well i suppose it's just a matter of taste. I got bored way too fast for the world of Oblivion, it never felt inviting nor did it make me want to explore.

Can't say same thing about Morrowind or Skyrim, there i'm walking all over the place!

I agree with most people who claim why Skyrim is superior. If you actually find various features of Oblivion better, then your either scared of change and one of those people who make rip-off DLC packages work or... you legitimately enjoy bad acting, static characters, no shouts/dragons, inconvenient repairing, more repetitive landscape, additional tedious management and a even more basic combat system.

Number of dragons in Oblivion: 0
Number of dragons in Skyrim: infinity
I don't care and I have never cared about the inclusion of dragons. They're pretty weak anyway but let's be clear that dragons could be replaced with any other creature not present in previous TES games and I would have cared the same, none. To be even clearer, a rat is a wolf is a lion to me and a dragon is a giant is a mammoth to me. High level enemies and low level enemies are the only two types I see.

That everyone was so hyped that there were dragons in this game, I just never understood.
Are you by any chance an accountant? That's a very... mathematical way of looking at a fantasy game.

Lets see.

- No athletics or acrobatics? Good. In Oblivion I could happily jump off small mountains without a scratch at higher levels which made absolutely no sense.

- I prefer Skyrim's character creator. Its actually pretty much the same in that you can still use presets or sliders, except the presets look better and now you can have warpaint/scars/tattoos etc.

- Skyrim's UI is fine with me. Don't really see the problems with it.

- You can view the actual object in a lot more detail before you put it on.

- Oblivion performs better because its a five year old game. On an old console.

Really the complaints about the UI's looks seem kinda stupid when the whole environment looks a million times better. If you really care about organising stuff that much get a mod, there probably is one... don't really see what's wrong with it alphabetising stuff for you.

Honestly, I tried my best to like Oblivion, but I couldn't. Boring world, boring characters, boring combat.

Skyrim? I frakking love it so much I am forcing myself not to use fast travel unless I really really need to. Beautiful world with plenty of stuff happening, although I only killed 2 dragons (excluding the first one) and have successfully filled a giant and his mammoth buddies with arrows, I still want to see more of Skyrim.

My only complaint would be the lack of options to block while dual wielding or to kill some people who unfortunately are unkillable, like those Jarl dudes, I want their ... stuff.
