"That's what you're doing. Doesn't mean you can't have a personal motive. Trust me, I know." Samus stood, picking up her helmet.

"I saw a single glimpse of the Tower while I was young, and since then it has been my quest. I do not know what I will do when I reach the Tower, nor do I know if I could even enter. But I know it is real, and I know I must find it. I have sacrificed everything in my journey, and I would do so again if I need to."

Joanna considered this for a moment, and was not entirely convinced. However, she knew that for now it might be better not to dwell on it, and decided to change the subject.
"What was your motive? How did you end up as a bounty hunter?" She asked, looking up at Samus as she rose. "It seems like a strange profession for a woman to take."

Now it was Samus' turn to be quiet for a moment. "I... Suffice to say, I wanted to set some things right, help people. The army was too aggressive, the police were too restrictive, so I struck out on my own."

Joanna raised an eyebrow.
"What were the army doing to people that you were uncomfortable with, if you are willing to help me hunt men down and cleave the souls from their bodies?"

"So you don't even know what's there, only you have to get there." Sophia repeated as she crossed her arms, thinking it over. "So the sacrificing you mentioned, was that also your fingers too?" Sophia asked, sobering up a bit on how much Roland seemed obsessed with reaching this tower.

"Bioweapons. Creating and transforming dangerous creatures to be used as weaponry on the battlefield. Most of them nearly uncontrollable. Also... The Fedoration Marines still aren't exactly eager to let a woman join their ranks."

"I lost my fingers on my journey, yes. But that is nothing compared to the friends and family that I have abandoned." Roland said with remorse, looking to the side as he found himself unable to meet Sophia's eyes. "Or the friends, family, and lovers that I have killed." He paused for a few seconds before continuing. "I live to find the Tower, and I must leave if I am to find it. Don't make this more difficult than it needs to be."

Joanna nodded sympathetically. "Women were not permitted to become knights in my land either. Some found ways to take up arms and fight as swordmaidens in the king's army, but it was rare. We were expected to live our lives more delicately, as ladies in waiting, or hovel wives, depending on one's birth. I suppose it really came down to the same thing. We were to keep the hearth warm, keep the home tidy, and carry and raise children." Joanna smiled as she thought back. "I always wanted to be a knight. I would sneak out and go to the training yard where the boys learned to use swords, spears and bows. When the master at arms was not there, I would swing a sword, and sometimes get into fights with them." At that, Joanna suddenly looked quite pleased with herself. "I... I remember that now. Yes, I did live in the castle, and that was where I started to learn how to fight with a blade!"

Joanna realised that she'd drawn the conversation off on a tangent and steered back to it.
"So, these Federation Marines... did they allow you to become one of them? With such armour, you must have become a warrior of immense prestige. Even the wealthiest of knights would not own battle-plate as impressive as yours."

"Roland..." Sophia looked at him, rather shocked at what she heard and how he seemed to react to his own actions. It was obvious from observation that Sophia wasn't in the least bit happy to hear what Roland had done, and yet still she persisted. "Roland, look at me! How are you so damn sure that leaving will really get you there any faster!?" She asked in a rhetorical manner, like she was going to say the answer herself.

Roland looked back at Sophia, tears just barely beginning to form in his eyes. ?I... I do not know where I need to go to find the Tower. I don't know if it would be any faster to go alone or to stay, but if I am alone, I will not cause harm to you. To any of our Ka-tet.?

"Ka-tet? What's that supposed to mean? Is that another thing like 'Remember the Eyes of your Father'? Because whatever it is, I know you regret what you have done." Sophia said as she walked right up to Roland, poking her finger to his chest, looking him in the eyes. "So swear to me that you won't ever do that crap again! You have been protecting us all this time Roland, you have made such an effort to make sure everyone in this group is alright! Swear on the 'EYe of your Father' that you won't harm your friends, and yourself just to get to a tower you don't know you'll ever reach! Because right now you have two options, either you walk out like how Victoria did, haplessly throwing away people that care about her just to find a thing she might never find, or you can stay here." Sophia said as she continued to stare at him, poking him occasionally to emphasize a point. "Because face it, regardless if you get to the tower or not, I know you would rather have the warm memories of people that cared about you, who wanted you to succeed and helped you when they could, rather than all the people you throw away in your life, with the only company of loneliness by your side!"

"So what the hell are you going to do?" She ended her rant, putting her hands on her hips as she continued to stare him down despite her smaller size, not letting him get the chance to look away from her.

Roland stayed silent as he listened to Sophia talk, barely reacting through most of it, even when she poked him. "I wish I could promise that I would never hurt any of you, but I cannot. I will reach the tower no matter how long it takes or whatever I must do... If I somehow knew that I could only reach the Tower by putting a bullet through your head, I would do so right now without hesitation. It saddens me to say this, but it is true." Roland explained remorsefully, not breaking eye contact. "The real reason that I want to leave is that I have grown to care for everyone here, and because of that I have become a danger to you."

"Yes. They were creatures designed to kill, often in horrible ways. Most of them were near uncontrollable, and if they ever got out, billions would die. I couldn't be part of an organisation that uses stuff like that. They've learned the error of their ways and stopped using them now, but I'm still not going back."

"Billions of people?" From the shock on her face, Joanna looked like she could barely even comprehend a number of people so great, let alone something that could slaughter them in such apocalyptic quantities. "How is that possible? What manner of creature could kill so many? Even hollows, which can never be killed once they turn, do not accumulate such a death toll, nowhere near it!"

"In my world, we can travel between stars, and there are many colonies and stations scattered through the galaxy. The creatures they used could wipe out colonies and travel through space with ease, and with some only one was needed to destroy entire military installations. Imagine what they could do to civilians."
