mace and shield. I'm both untrained and a brute, so the mace allows me to take advantage of pure strength, while the shield gives me a defensive option.
Hoplon (spartan shield, they are called "hoplites" because they wield this shield)
Naginata (Japanese pole-sword)
or halberd (poleaxe on one side, hammer on the other, spear tip at the top)
Bronze plate armor with chain-mail underneath
Gladius (Spanish stabbing short sword, most known for its use by the Romans)
or a Hand-and-a-Half sword (medieval sword that can be used as a 1-hander or a 2-hander)
The bronze plate is effective at stopping stabbing attacks since the soft metal absorbs the impact, bending and not breaking. The chain-mail covers where the bronze can't. The Hoplon can be used both to stop enemy attacks and to bash their heads in. The naginata/halberd would be use more or less like a spear, but could be used like a 2-hander if I lost my shield (like if I got a spear in my shield, which would make it unbalanced to the point it was unusable so I'd have to discard it). The Gladius is for close combat. Its weight makes it effective for slashing, but it can pierce near any armor with its powerful stabbing. The Hand-and-a-Half sword would be better than the Gladius if I lost my shield (since I could use it as a 2-hander and I can't with the Gladius), but the Gladius would be better if I had the shield still.
I have thought quite a lot about what would be the best melee-combat setup. But if I was limited to just 1 weapon, I'd go with:
A German zweihander (translates to 2-hander) which was designed to break the tip off of enemy pikes (which is why the blade is how it is). A Flamberger would be at each end of a pike formation. His job would be to smash the enemy pikes before his allies are skewered. The grip above that hand guard is used when in close quarters. That extra handgrip means the Flamberge can be both a 2-handed sword and a polearm. 2-handed gives you more leverage, while going into polearm mode gives you better control and makes it useable in close combat.
Gimmie a decent short sword (Damascan steel and make), some studded leather armor, a small hand crossbow with a bolt coated with Black Mamba venom, a long, heavy cloak, a pouch full of salt, and some caltrops.
simple, steam boiler, with vents sealed... no gun powder, no lazers, just fire, water and a bunch of metal, instant bomb, oh wait i had to survive... okay steam powered grapnel cannon.
*edit*
and yes steam power was known even back in the first century, though it was more for entertainment and theory. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aeolipile (yeah i know wikipeadia being a refrence isn't winning any awards)
(someone who play's cod too much) id quickscope their ass with an intervention NO GUNS oh then id throwing knife them... MY ANSWER: throwing awe or hatchet OR katana.
It all depends on what my opponent has-If he's wearing full plate armour and chainmail, a mace will suit much more than any sword. If he has a sword, I'll probably pick a Katana (I train in Haidong Gumdo and a little Kendo, so it'd be good for me) and a twin pair of well-made Sai's as a back up. A Zwiehander wouldn't go astray either if he only has a short range weapon and a longbow would be useful at range.
They're are far too many variables for a difinitive answer, but if I had to pick, I'd go with a Katana, Sai's and a longbow as back up, all with chainmail and Samurai armour for mobility.
