James was pleased to have avoided cracking anyone over the head when he threw the box, such incidents were common with him, and got to work stuffing all his assorted magic items back into his pockets. He noted that the girl who spoke after him had even less hobbies than he did, something James found relatively impressive. After all James did little other than practice the magic tricks he already knew or learn others from whatever books, shows, or websites he could access.

James began to muse in his head. "I wonder what's worse, to be obsessed with cheap magic tricks or to have no interests at all?" James couldn't decide and thought he should leave it to chance. He left a coin on his desk and flipped it into the air, frowning as it landed on heads.

"Wait a minute...," James picked the coin up and saw it was heads on both sides, "aww man, don't I have a real coin?" James chuckled and went back to lounging in his chair, his eyes searching the room for whoever was going next as he chewed his gum.

Damien spun his plate around his fingers, grouping the kids with his special system as they introduced themselves. When the obvious magician wannabe stood up, it took everything Damien had not to crack a smile. "Hmm... Peacock. Definitely gonna fit riiiigggghhhttt in with this school. I can't wait until he gets into his first duel." Damien then cast his eye over Sophie. "Huh. A rabbit. She must not like being the center of attention much. Her choice." Damien's eyes wandered over a few other students. "Hey, I think I remember seeing that girl before. What was her name? K-something. K..K..K... Kelsey! Kelsey Walker! Oh yeah, she was that really quiet girl I always saw in the library last year. Huh, I have sophomores too?" Damien noticed that everyone was nudging each other, but no one actually wanted to stand up. "C'mon, I know I have more than two students in this class! I'm not blind yet! Who's next?" Damien's eyes travelled a bit more, until they came to rest upon an all-too familiar face. "Oh no. Oh, hell no. I hate you so much right now, Mr Rei. Why the hell would you put me in a class with friggin' Angela Chao? The girl hates the fact that I breathe!"

Gavren---

In a simple attempt to defy his parents, Gavren, took his time getting up. But his Mom, got him up and into the shower, which even that he took his time. He hated this, being caught and forced to come back home, and then going to the Magic Academy still after all that happened. Gavren would have hoped his parents would have understood, but instead, decided that he will also be punished with a Mo plate. Goody.

Once finished he got dressed and went downstairs to the front door. Just as he opened the door, it slammed shut, and his Dad appeared. ?Gavren, we will be driving you. We will not let you walk there.? He spoke in a demanding voice.

Ugh? Why, would I run, I would just be caught. I know you have spies.

Together Gavren and his dad went out to his car, and drove. He put on a disinterested look, he looked at his Dad who did have a concerned look. ?You need to understand, this will be best for you. Gavren, you will love magic. Your life will be greatly improved.?

When he arrived, he was late. Perfect. After a short look around, he arrived at his class, 1-B. Just as they were introducing each other. His eyes scanned across the room and he walked and sat down. He didn?t draw much attention and he was happy about that. Gavren looked at the teacher, but he didn?t seem like one, more so like a student, but he wasn?t one to judge. Maybe it would have made more sense had he actually arrived on time.

Eventually it was his turn to introduce himself, he assumed it was standard fare as to what they would like to know. So he stood up and gave his simple introduction.

?My name is Gavren Noisha, I am 15, and I guess, I will say that I rather be somewhere else. No offense.? With that he sat down, hoping he wouldn?t have to do much more. In his mind he played out various escape plans, ones that seemed possible and others that seemed impossible. It would have to be a plan that would allow Gavren to not be seen by his parents, special guards.

It is going to be tough, but it is all he wants.

Kelsey arrived that morning earlier than most of the rest. By the time the school was bustling with student activity she had hidden herself away in the recesses of the library for what felt like hours. Time flies.

A faint buzz brought her from her trance-like state and she delved into her jacket pocket for her phone. With a button press the vibrating alarm stopped and she put it back into the pocket. She had decided to set it to stop her from losing track of time here, as she was so prone to doing, so that she could safely navigate the corridors and get to class on time.

As she exited the library and wandered toward her homeroom she was intercepted by Mr. Rei. He had several papers, and was no doubt on the prowl for the sophomores he was going to draft into being teachers.

"Kelsey, I was just looking for you," he began, stopping her in her tracks, "You know about our new measure to strengthen the bonds between students, right?"

"Uhm, I heard that some of the higher-ranked students would be teaching classes but I didn't really think it was true..."

"It is. It means some of the sophomores will be taught by their own classmates, and you're in Damien's homeroom. We wanted to make sure you wouldn't get too worried with a class."

"I, uh, don't think I-" "He's teaching in 1-B. I'm on my way to get him now, so you should be able to get there on time."

"Um, okay... I'll make sure to..." She started away toward 1-B and Mr. Rei headed off toward the MEC room.

[hr]

After Damien's introduction to the class she made sure to enter his number into her phone and then start looking around to her classmates. They introduced themselves one by one, with Kelsey trying to match faces to names.

A boy walked in, sat at a desk, introduced himself as Gavren, and then he threw the bubblegum packet onto her desk. She paused before taking a stick and then standing up.

"My name is Kelsey... I... uhm..." She wasn't even looking up, instead letting her fringe completely conceal her face. "I'm a sophomore and I... suppose I like books..." Her voice faded away and she slinked back down into her seat. Before she even passed on the box of gum she shot up again. "Also, I run the library committee... It's only me at the moment though..." She passed the box of gum in a random direction and sat back in her seat.

Two more people had spoken and James was growing more baffled with each passing second. Was 1-B a class specially for disinterested people like him? That boy Gavren was obviously some sort of master of apathy, not only did the idea of a magic academy not intrigue him but he didn't even want to be here. The next girl Kelsey liked books, James personally didn't read much more than magic tricks but at least Kelsey had an interest. The fact that she was only member of the Library Committee was also bizarre, wasn't the Cascade High library massive?

"Thrills abound..." James muttered under his breath continiously, staring out a window as he tossed a coin up into the air and caught it again and again.

Will lounged in his chair, watching the other members of his class introduce themselves. Sadly, the group seemed like a mostly boring, apathetic lot, save for the in the coat and hat, who looked like he was either incredibly lame or awesomely ironic, but was bored of the others in any case. It seemed like a move had to be made. As Kelsey handed on the gum, he reached out to take it and stood.

Pausing for a moment, he chewed a piece of gum. Knowing he was the center of attention, he took his time and surveyed the class, even as they watched him. "My name's William Ferneaux," he said eventually, "And unlike most of the class seem to be, I'm actually quite exited to be learning how to shape the fabric of reality. I'm not very good at summing myself up, but at a push I'd go so far as to say that I'm a fencer and a mathematician, and I'd like to know something about everything. Oh, and I turn fifteen next month."

He looked around the room again, trying to judge reactions, or just see who wanted the gum and/or limelight next...

James nodded in approval of Will's comment about being excited to learn about magic, this was a magic academy! Anyone not excited about this must be dead inside in James' opinion. Plus, he was the first one in the class to profess interest in more than one thing, although James didn't have much to with maths other than occasionally claiming he was a "Mathmagician" as a joke sometimes.

"We have a record in this room right now!" James dug a notebook out of one of his many pockets and began to scribble in it furiously with half a pencil that looked as if it had been burnt at one point. He tallied the the interests of every speaker in the room which William was in the lead with two interests. Sofia had a mark for her interest in soccer but James left a question mark after that because 'normal stuff' couldn't really be counted as a specific interest.

Oblivious to how bizarre he was acting, he stuffed the notebook and pencil back in his pocket and went back to relaxing in his seat.

Sofia's ears perked up at the mention of the Library Committee. Did she say she's the only one? That might be nice actually... I'll have to keep that in mind for later. Kelsey was her name? I'll remember that. Aftyer that she continued to listen to her classmates introduce themselves. So far most of them were pretty out there. In fact, she might be the odd one out just because she was the only one who would be considered normal outside this school. What was that William said? Shaping the fabric of reality? I wonder if I could do that... It'd be nice. The sense of woner and awe of magic still hadn't hit her yet since the only magic she had seen so far was a human microphone and some pervs peeping through her clothes.

Angela Chao stared daggers at Damian as the others introduced themselves. She had been looking forward to the new school year so much. All her friends, and even more spells to learn. She had heard of the policy about student teachers, and she thought it seemed like an interesting idea. But now that she found out Damian was the one teaching she couldn't believe it.

That dull witted brute? How could anyone expect him to do anything, much less teach a class. Well, she would definitely have to post a complaint later. In the mean time she might as well play along.

She stood up and smiled at the other students. "Well, my name's Angela Chao. I'm a sophomore, so don't be afraid of asking me any questions or coming to me for any help you need." Her voice became a bit of dismissive. "And you'll probably need it depending on your teacher."

She smiled again as she looked over the other students. "So just remember, if there's anything you need just remember Angela." With that done she returned to her seat.

Kelsey had a feeling these students would be very fun to be with in tasks. She was worried that there would be a bit of a problem with a few of them if they didn't change their attitudes. Naming no names, of course... More than anything she hoped they would not drag down her own performance.

She was least worried with James and Will. If anything, they'd be doing well by themselves and having to drag along the less magically adept with them... They seemed likeable enough and would probably make friends easily. They would be fine here, so long as they didn't fall in with a bad crowd.

But yes, it would be a bit fun to see how things progressed.

Will turned to observe the sophomores. Damien seemed interesting; a Aryan giant who was nonetheless friendly, and something of a policeman to boot. Whether he was actually interesting remained to be seen. The girls, on the other hand, seemed to be opposites; Kelsey was quiet and reserved, but appeared to be watching the class with appreciative eyes (yes, he had noticed her eyes rest on him a while), while Angela spoke with confidence and charisma to the class, but spent her spare time glowering at Damien in a way she probably thought wasn't obvious.

Will grinned; this was obviously going to be an interesting year.

Next to him, James pulled out a notebook and started scribbling. As someone else began speaking, Will leaned over and asked quietly "Hey dude, what's up? Did you just get a whisper from your muse?"

Meanwhile, he kept half an eye on Kelsey. If she looked his way again, he'd give her a wink. In the spirit of scientific experimentation he reminded himself, and grinned once more.

William's voice started James out of his bizarre thoughts and he spun around to look at who had spoken to him. For a moment confusion was on his face before he realised what Will was refering to.

"Oh that!" James took his sunglasses off and lowered his voice, "less of my muse and more of the unending scream of apathy, I was just noting how disinterested a lot of these people are? I was sure everyone here would at least be interested in magic." James shook his head in mock disgust.

"It's Will isn't it? Fencing, Maths, only other person to express an interest in magic so far? Nice to meet you."

A vein in Damien's forehead pulsed slightly. While he agreed that he wanted nothing to do with this teaching assignment, hearing his capability report from Angela irked him. He grinned angelically at Angela and the rest off the class. "Yes. Class, if you ever feel in need of aid, and I'm on duty, feel free to go and see Angela for help. I'm sure she'll be willing to spend the long nights helping you with your homework instead of say... Socializing. In fact, she'll be with me immediately after class to help discuss this year's magical curriculum. Won't you, Angela?" Damien's smile, while losing none if its sincerity, somehow seemed to take on a more infernal attribute. "She can screw with me all she wants outside of class, but God help her if she fucks it up for the freshmen." Damien jumped off his desk and proceeded to the back of the room once everyone in the class had spoken, picking up the gum on the way. When he reached the matted area, Damien stopped and waited for all eyes to turn towards him.

"All right, I reckon that's enough for now. This is a magic class after all, not debate team. Oh, by the way, has everyone taken a piece of gum? Good. The gum was specially prepared with kumizo juice. I had Cory whip up a batch down at the Drug Maker's club. If you've lost the flavor in your piece, it's already in yer system. All it does is copy the same effect that the anti-magic treatment the school does for clothing. The effects only last for a day or so, but that should buy y'all some time t' get your clothes treated. With that outta the way, I need to know how you are with magic so I can plan accordingly. Synthetic magic is usually taught by the end of the fourth quarter, but it's so useful I would like to move it up. Because frankly, this is just plain fun." Damien took the screw he palmed earlier, and inserted it into his neck, whispering "Magic In." to his card. The silver card glowed and disappeared. Damien reached up to his head... And took it off! He threw it to a student, who panicked with a shriek and threw Damien's head back at his body. Damien caught himself, then showed everyone his neck so they could see the bolt and thread combination there. "Magic Out. I love that trick." Damien chuckled as his head screwed back on while the magic cancelled itself out. "My name is Damien Lier, I recently turned 16, 'n I like snowboarding, marksmanship, driving, and anything else that involves speed. Looking for new spells in the library is nice, too. But right now, I wanna see your best magic, so I know where to go with you guys." Damien inserted his plate into his arm. ".45 Revolver!" Damien commanded the magic, forming the infamous cannon-sized gunbarrel on his left arm. "This is one of my favorites, the .45 Revolver. So step right up and show me what you got!"

Yay! We now have an official usergroup! Walk right on in!

Gavren---

Show off our best magic..? That will be quite tough considering I have a Mo plate rather than a regular plate. Best bring that up to the teacher.

Gavren stood up, around him people looked to see if he would use magic. Despite what he earlier said. He coughed to clear his throat. ?Damien, sir, I don't know what my plate can do. I have a Mo plate.? With that he sat down and didn?t say anything else.

Sofia felt like her eyes almost popped out of her head when she saw Damien unscrew his own head and toss it around the room. Shape the fabric of reality huh? That's just crazy... I can't believe it's only sophomore level too. Will I really be able to do something like that in just a year? As Damien announced their first task of demonstrating some magic, Sofia glanced around to see who would go first. But the only one who made a move to do something was a boy who claimed his plate couldn't use magic. What was up with that?

Maybe I should just suck it up and do it? At least I know now that no one can X-ray me again... Thankfully, she had done her research before coming, or else she'd feel like even more of a fool for not knowing any spells. Taking a deep breath, Sofia stood and made her way to the front of the class. "I uh... Guess I'll go for it. This is the best one I know, but it's still probably not very good compared to what you're used to... Magic in." She said as she dropped her plate into her shadow on the ground, which she had made sure to align with Damien's shadow. When Damien tried to move he would find he was completely paralyzed. Although the effect lasted only 30 seconds or so before her plate emerged from her shadow once again. "Like I said, probably not that good..." She muttered, not wanting to get into the fact that spell was probably weak due to her recent depression.

James laughed in a startled fashion as Damien pulled his own head off and threw it at a student. He certainly hadn't been expecting that and laughing was the only thing he could do when faced with something like that. Then Damien announced they were to show off their best magic and James was taken aback, magic this soon? What spell to use? James was nearly pulling his hair out in frustration at not knowing any overly impressive spells.

Before he could decide between what few spells he knew, Sofia was on her feet standing beside Damien at the front of the room so he stopped his frantic thinking for a moment to watch the display with interest. At first it seemed like nothing had happened other than what looked like a flicker of movement in the shadows. James flicked his eyes questioningly over at Damien, did the spell have some effect on him?

Will watched the first student take a position in front of Damien. Sophie, or some such, he thought, as she murmured a command and dropped her plate.

For a moment it seemed like she had simply fumbled, but she seemed at least to view the result with as some kind of success. But nothing had happened.

Or was that the point?

Damien was a talker; he had already shown that. No way would he be standing there doing nothing if he had a choice in the matter. And Sophie had dropped her plate in front of her, on her shadow where it had disappeared. The shadow crossed Damien's own, and where they did so there seemed a tiny crackle of light, in that same maddening color as the question on the exam.

Magic at work...

How informal will this be? Will wondered, Can we just step up and improvise?
Following this thought, he took aim at Sophie, and summoned a complex geometric construct in his minds eye.

A flicker of the plate and a whisper of 'Trick of the eye', and the air around Sophie's head burst into a crazy display of geometric madness like the Devil's own firework display. Will focused his hardest, trying to make the constructs ever more complicated, and hoping it would break her concentration.

I hope I'm not too out of line with this.

Also, I know she's called Sofia, but Will doesn't always listen that close...

Kelsey had seen the headscrew trick before, and it still frightened her a little now. It just seemed far too unnatural to remove your own head and then reattach it. She now had an opportunity to show off some magic of her own.

Before she got too far in her own thoughts she overheard Gavren say he couldn't use magic because of his "Mo plate", whatever that was. No wonder he didn't like being here; he couldn't use magic and would just spend every day being reminded that he was so close to being able. But what was the Mo plate? She would have to see if she could research that during her break. But for now, magic of her own needed to be cast.

A few people seemed to be struggling with coming up with something that would be good to show off, and Sofia stepped up first. It wasn't flashy magic like Damien's had been. Instead it might have been a form of... shadow manipulation. No. It was more than that. "Oh, this is..." She cut her sentence short, deliberately leaving any unwitting freshmen to guess at the effect. She had a feeling Damien would have seen this sort of magic before too.

And then the air around Sofia's head suddenly exploded with some rapidly changing shapes and colours. This was new magic to Kelsey. She'd not seen this before, but she could safely guess... vision magic based around the idea of breaking concentration? Some sort of kaleidoscopic effect. Not a great counter against magic that had a set timer, but against something that needed to be held this would be formidable. The only real worry here was if it were not vision based. If the shapes and colours were solid they would do some severe damage to their victim... She tried not to get too held up on that fact. After all, these were freshmen. It would be impossible for them to use such horrific magic, right?

Even as his mind surged with maddening shapes to pour out, Will spared a small part of his attention to observe the class' reaction. Kelsey, he noted, seemed to think it was dangerous, but he realized that it was not immediately obvious that the constructs were harmful.

But what if they were?

Even thinking about it made his mind whirl; at the moment he was just generating and bending light; barely any energy use at all. But to make something solid, let alone of dangerous energy, was way beyond his talents. For now. Right now, perhaps a version that worked with sound, or a combination of both mediums? Or maybe just work on creating something convincing realistic, rather than just crazy shapes?

Oh man, he thought as he forced the lid closed on the ideas and returned to the present, This magic stuff is gonna be awesome.

After a confusing first attempt at magic left James leaning forward in his seat trying to see what exactly was going on. So when a burst of crazy colours and images whirled into life around Sofia's head he nearly fell out of his seat. Damien, still paralysed, Kelsey seemed a bit startled too, Gavren couldn't perform magic...Then James spotted Will concentrating and realised he was behind the magic.

"Impressive... I find it hard to believe many could conentrate through that lot." Speaking of concentration... James began to clap loudly, forgetting he was in classroom rather than a magic show.

"I can't wait to have a turn now!"
