I think this story is kind of sad, actually. "We're not important enough to actually be attacked by Anonymous, so let's just say we were." Kind of a desperate cry for attention, if you ask me. Obviously, it worked though. Here's an Escapist article on it.

So the Westboro Baptist Church is at it again with their inflammatory nonsense? Honesty, why doesn't the U.S. just insert a clause that they are the "Exception that Proves the Rule" for Free Speech? I don't think anyone would actually be bothered if the WBC was completely erased from this planet given their "contributions."

These nutters are such an extremist fringe group compelled by their own convoluted plots for greed and power that it makes me wonder (and laugh a little) at what the founding fathers would do in such a situation. Perhaps they would be accused of being possessed...

My point is, Anonymous is a... "collective" or whatever you want to call it where the left hand doesn't have a clue half the time what the right hand is doing, let alone what the ASS parts are up to at any given moment. Again, because there is NO Structure!
Or is there? Is there a defined leadership? How does anonymous keep its members in line? What precautions are there taken and what punishments are doled out in order to prevent corruption from within ANONYMOUS?

That is what makes Anonymous dangerous to me, as I agree, you and I have discussed. However, you have yet to provide anything remotely close to a satisfactory answer to ANY of those questions, so until then, the concern remains that Anonymous is just as corruptible and dangerous as the corporations and governments they claim to be fighting.

Anon went after him because he said that anyone who downloaded music should be sued for every penny they have, thrown in jail and raped.

Honestly, it's like these people haven't bothered to read the New Testament. "God hates X" and "God despises Y" is completely missing the point. In fact it's completely counter to the point. God loves us all, no matter the flaws we have. (Important: I disagree on most points with what the WBC regards as a flaw)

As for Anonymous attacking them, I wish they would. The issue being they haven't actively done anything wrong. Spouting hate and bullshit isn't against the law. Suppressing their ability to do so is.

Exactly what I find myself saying, after headdesking myself into a new table, every time WBC ends up in the news. I am nondenominational Protestant personally, and can't believe how many times people cite WBC when bashing me over my religion at school. I guess the problem might come from no churches really rising up and saying "WBC are frauds, they are not us!"

Knowingly accusing another of something they did not do, even outside of a court of law can count as false witness. And while the term neighbor is used, it doesn't just mean the person living next door. According to the parable of the Good Samaritan as told by Jesus, everyone is your neighbor and bearing false witness against anyone is a sin. Then again this is the WBC and sadly they are the sort who are willing to pick and choose that which supports their claims and completely ignore that which does not. This is the true great flaw of religion. Believing in a higher power is not something to be scorned. Jesus never said "I, or rather the Lord, beseech you as Christ's heralds to publish this everywhere and to pers­e all people of whatever rank, foot-soldiers and knights, poor and rich, to carry aid promptly to those Christians and to destroy that vile race from the lands of our friends" it was someone who came later and distorted the values of another to serve his own ends. Religion isn't wrong, people abusing religion is wrong. And that is exactly what malevolent and downright evil people like Fred Phelps do just to suit their own ends.

You?re searching for enimies where they don?t exist. What kind of corruption are you referring to here? How could someone profit from a non-profit group?

AnonOps has structure and planning using IRC, twitter, blogs etc. While the trolling internet hate machine have structure and planning on 4chan, 7chan, ebaums world etc. I have listed above the ways you can see what AnonOps is involved in. You can see what the the darker side of anonymous is up to by visiting the other forums. So yes, you can tell what these groups are up to.

Anonymous operations is a leaderless, hierarchy-less group where good ideas and bad ideas are naturally permeated or ignored respectively. Any form of directorship is quickly quelled as pride is one of the few taboos in the Anonymous community. They keep themselves in line, there is no need for leaders.

So basically this whole controversy, on both sides, is fake, to garner publicity for those involved. (Which it seems to have done very effectively, by the way.)

And who are those involved? Well, on the one side we have the faux-noble group who are responsible for a hate-mail campaign against an eleven year-old schoolgirl, and hacking a website aimed at epilepsy sufferers to show flashing lights that induce life-threatening seizures; and on the other side, we have the group who have adopted as one of their mottos "God hates Fags".

Sometimes the world can be a depressing place. This is one of those times.
